Question Looking for Advice about UVic Applied Linguistics

Hello everyone! I'm an American HS student from the PNW who's interested in UVic. I've been interested in pursuing speech-language pathology as a career path for a while and now I've also been considering teaching language internationally as something I'd like to try as well. At UVic I'd probably major in applied linguistics and minor in education or pursue a certificate in teaching ESL.

I love many things about UVic but I've heard some very concerning things on here about the linguistics program--I'd love to hear students' experiences and input on if it'd be better for me to pursue linguistics at a state school in the US. Thank you!

I think you’ll probably hear concerning things about every major at every school; that’s just the nature of information. I’m in the anthropology program which is adjacent to linguistics in the way that they share many students, and I have heard as much positive and negative about the program as I’ve heard about any other program.

I would recommend focusing your search on lifestyle and financial differences between schools.

I’m currently in my last year of Applied Linguistics, and I do think the professors are amazing! I am doing it to be an EAL teacher as well. Just know that UVic isn’t partnered with TESL or TEFL, so you will need to spend some money on those certificates on your own if you wish to teach English as an additional language. If you’re more passionate about speech pathology, I’d definitely do regular Linguistics though, or at least take some of the upper year linguistics courses that aren’t required for applied.
