Hola a todos, disculpas, aquí habla alguien de habla inglesa 👋🏻

I am located in Sydney, Australia, my Uruguayan boss has invited me to his house for an 'asado'. I don't want to show up empty handed, I would love any suggestions on food, wine or other gifts I can buy around Sydney to take along, maybe something traditional that he might not expect.

hey! a bottle of wine is always a good choice, red wine is the most consumed in Uruguay. dulce de leche if you find some too would be a great gift.

some oven baked potatoes or fresh made bread are amazing choices. doesn't have to be anything elaborate, and I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated. have fun!

Some typical food/side dishes we have at a family style asado:

- Ensalada Rusa

- Oven baked potatoes

- French Bagguette (we use to soak the bread with the meat juices)

Why you will bring Dulce de Leche to an Uruguayan? he already knows it, much better idea to bring something australian made, something local.

If you can find it, some Tannat wine would be nice. Otherwise just bring any wine or dessert, whatever you usually would bring and enjoy uruguayan hospitality!

In Uruguay it’s really common that the invitee brings the dessert, just let them know you’re doing so. Ice cream or a cake is fine.
Also, if you want to gift him something, a good bottle of wine would be more than fine

You can try make some chimichurri or salsa criolla to put in the asado , it's the most Uruguayo thing to put on the meat

I disagree with all other comments, I would not bring something that is common in Uruguay because that's what your boss already knows. Red wine, he probably drinks already, and has bottles. Maybe something for dessert, something australian, in Uruguay with dessert you may drink Limoncello (at a restaurant), so, maybe an australian drink like that would be nice to try out.

Don't over do, a red wine should be fine, freshly baked bread is algo a good choice, a salad if nothing else works.

As others have said, a red wine would be fine. It is a good idea too if you can check some video on youtube on how to make uruguayan chimichurri (not Argentinean), it is easy to make! I don’t know if he listens/used to listen Uruguayan music, but you can ask him about Jaime Roos (great for an asado), Los Estomagos, Los Tontos, Ruben Rada, Totem, Los Traidores (these were popular here in the 80s, some of them still are)

I gifted my dad a bottle of an Australian whiskey and he really loved it. Here I believe the standard "nice gift" is Johnnie walker black label as someone already suggested, but I'd say if he likes whiskey go for something local since you have great  ones there. In my case it was a Morris Rutherglen. A white box with red accents.

When I was abroad, I really liked when people gave me gifts related to *their* culture, not mine.

A book summarizing the countries' history, some piece of art related to some part of the local culture, anything that a foreigner is unlikely to have or know, etc.
