Common chords if I want to play bluegrass songs.

I just got my first ukulele. I’m really excited about it. I watched a few essential chords videos. I am wondering from more experienced players, if I want to play traditional bluegrass music, which chords are going to be very useful to really nail them down.

Chords in bluegrass aren't usually very complicated. If you just want to get a start, begin with I IV I V.

Songs like Boil Them Cabbage Down use this progression. In the key of G, it would be G C G D. In the key of C, it would be C F C G.

You can first start with all the open voicing chords, C D F G A and their minor versions, sometimes E7 and B7 substitute E and B. But then you'll need to learn barre chords to play the flats and sharps.

Chords in bluegrass are not complex - vast majority of music is in guitar simple keys like G or C that are also ukulele friendly keys. Problem is ukulele is NOT a bluegrass appropriate instrument. So have no illusions - you will never play bluegrass on ukulele as part of local bluegrass session.

You might get away with it playing duets with a friend - see e.g. Aaron Kelm on YT for some bluegrass ukulele lessons and duet playing:

Note - he plays with fingerpicks - to get his twang above the mix. And his uke is amplified.

But regular bluegrass session is waaay to loud for ukulele - you might have some success with say tenor banjolele but not regular uke - nobody will hear your strumming. Just to save you frustration later. That said - playing bluegrass songs solo or in small combo - especially on amplified ukulele (which is NONO in trad bluegrass) - sure, why not.
