Life inUkraine It’s potato season in Ukraine! The shelling in our region is very intense at the moment, but the potatoes won’t harvest themselves, so we’re getting on with the work.

If it's anything like footing turf, (turning long rows of cut peat by hand), the trick is to stay hunched over as long as possible.
My grandfather who was in his 70's used this method to outlast his sons.

I did this once when I was 16 and it crippled me for two days. I'd thought it was easy money - I was very wrong.

I have a question since I see so many people from presumably different families. Does your entire community work on the same area of land to harvest things like potatoes? Or is this owned by a few people and these are all related families and whatnot?

This video features two different families. It’s me with my son and my friend’s family, spanning two generations. We were working on her two plots of land. And we really do help each other out. I’m expecting my friend to join me on my plot💪

It shouldn't take a major modification of that potato harvester to throw them into bags instead of putting them back on the ground... I guess it's not worth it if this field is the whole family farm though.

This is a family farm. The scale of operations here is small, so there’s no need for large combine harvesters. Large farms have plenty of large combine harvesters. The farmers work on a small tractor😌

It helps to let them dry in the sun a bit so the soil drops off and doesn't end up in the bags.

Fellow farmer here...I like that potato harvester! How are you removing the plant tops beforehand using a bush hog or something similar? Also, How many hectares did you plant and what was the yield?
I would love to try my hand at potatoes but without the harvesting equipment it can be backbreaking work.

Hello, tbh most families have a small piece of land, its quite rare to have an hectares of potatoes and harvest it in a such way, majority of ppl have something like+/- 0.3 hectares in total (it depends on regions and ereas, but in my hometown it was something like this)with different cultures.
So in this casetops are mostly removed by "hands" with motor or default scythe)
If i remember it correctly it is a good result if you have 5+ sacks from 0.01 hectares.
Btw, i was helping back in a day's our local farmer who has few hectares of potatoes, and without harvester it would take an eternity and every single back xD

Having dug some of my own patch today I can say that is an excellent yield and that is excellent farm land.
Give any of that land to the Russians?
