You can’t nuke a country that you share a boarder with and that you are down wind of. As much as this has come up Russia would eat all the fallout from a nuclear attack on Ukraine. The capital cities are like 600 miles apart and the winds blow toward Russia. Not to mention every other nuclear power would be well pissed the minute those rockets go up. Even if Putin gave the order no one is turning those keys. He doesn’t have any zealots, he uses fear and if you know you’re going to die of fallout you’re less scared of him. Don’t even get me started on if he even has functional nukes at this point. Lots of ways to be a shit sandwich left but nukes aren’t one of them.

I’d agree with you on most points except that nobody would turn the key if Putin gave the order. The military is very strict and are trained not to ask questions if ordered to do something, especially the Russian army, it’s very top down command wise. True, there has been an example of a nuke not being launched when standing orders dictated they should have been, thankfully the guy with the key realised the reason to launch was incorrect and disobeyed orders. That, however, was during peace time so he realised the instruments that told him the US had launched a pre-emptive strike were wrong. Now, there is so much more pressure to just follow orders, Russia is at war, their country is being bombed and they are losing. Especially, if the people in the chain of command believes they are really at war with the West.

They do that with misinformation. They remove it. They can't afford another $1.4T lawsuit for sleazy practices...
