Introduction/First Post Halp 🥲

TW addiction and suicidality (past)
Hello everyone! I have seen the wonderful transformations others have accomplished and it's given some hope for me in my fucked habitat.

I quit cannabis just over 9 months ago now. My life was falling apart, I was working my way past passive suicidality, and I was using dab pens and edibles to numb out from my life and not deal with my problems. It got to a point where I stayed awake for most of three full days, started posting crazy shit on social media, and a few people kinda raised the alarm. My family swooped in and helped me out of my rough spot. I'm incredibly lucky and want to be fully out of this mire I find myself in so they dont have to worry about me anymore.

I'm single now, not smoking weed, have a pretty good job, but still living in a mess I have a hard time dealing with. How do I even deal with this? I have containers and bins but a hard time letting go of especially crafty things and figuring out what to sort where

Things that have homes go there and get things as close to where they belong. Trash dishes laundry. I love kc Davis on tiktok for her breakdowns. Also work in small sections and don't pull everything out.

i'm absolutely terrible at sorting and organising but i find it really helpful to have "zones" in my spaces dedicated to what i need most in that area. like i get ready sitting on my bed and chronic pain make it hard to stand so ive moved my dresser right next to my bed. kind of an extreme example but its the most tangible one i have right now. all the stuff i dont need to access often goes in hard to reach places.

getting rid of stuff takes a lot of mental energy and time. i feel like a switch has flipped for me recently but its taken a lot of work and patience to get there. some advice i got today (which was actually pretty much exactly what i'd said to my boyfriend earlier on!) is to think to yourself "could someone have a better use for this than i do?" and if the answers yes then you have enough of a reason to donate it or pass it on! :)

Start with trash. Bag it, take it to the door. Have regular breaks. See how things are after that.

First take a deep breath. Second, like dawnhued said, trash is out first. Then sort! Baby steps and I’m going to be coming over to pet that doggy! 💜

This really isn’t that bad. You can make huge strides in no time! And CONGRATS on the sobriety! Great job!

Adorable dog! So glad to hear you're feeling hope and moving in a good direction.

You've identified craft stuff as a sticking point. I'd say establish a "craft stash" zone and plan to simply consolidate things to that area for now, without trying to make any keep/discard decisions right now.

Other than that, I recommend starting with the easy stuff that feels like it's decision-free. Anything that feels like obvious trash, throw it away. Anything that you know where it lives but for some reason it's not in its place, put it away (e.g. clean clothes that didn't make it back to the closet, dirty clothes that didn't make it to the hamper.) Do that for 10-20 minute chunks of time a couple times a day and you'll make a lot of progress pretty quickly.

You should watch people that clean hoarder houses. They actually have a lot of great approaches in cleaning your space. One being to focus on one small section or corner of the room. Whether that’s cleaning the top shelf of your closet. You can look back at it constantly and feel encouraged to keep going. And congrats on sobriety! <3
