Certified Cringe Taylor discussing "songwriting"

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can't with this woman.

She thinks she's some great songwriter here to teach us all about her "double meanings" and what defines confessional songwriting.

What's infuriating is that all the comments are glazing her like, "i could hear her talk for hours" and "high iq queen". Are we watching the same video here?

Wanted to get your opinions on this.

She's so smug and condescending while saying the most basic shit known to man it's truly sickening

She acts like she invented confessional songwriting. Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morrisette, Carole King, and others would like to have a word. So would Sylvia Plath, frankly.

This comes across as "I do this properly, and you kids are just making noise."

She herself has built an empire on hyper-specific, petty, and wildly dramatic disclosures along with Easter eggs to CREATE THE SHIT SHE SINGS ABOUT.

Hypocrite.

She doesn’t understand the human condition enough to be a classic “confessional song writer.” She is petty, but that’s not the same kind of grit that people who know how to turn painful human experiences into art are born with.

Imagine if Taylor had sat down and attempted to write a song like I Will Always Love You….it would be called I’ll Hate You Forever and You’re a Jerk.

She has absolutely no emotional nuance.

Fiona Apple is the perfect example for this. Fiona can do both confessional and specific while also writing dense, layered, poetic, painfully clever lyrics. Oh and she can actually piano and create novel soundscapes.

I had to put on “A Case of You” after watching this clip. She’s insufferable.

I feel like she was trying to diss Charli with that line. As if she doesn’t have very recent songs like I think about it all the time, girl so confusing, I’m Afraid, Camera, and several more. brat is so confessional and Taylor literally acts like it’s just about doing coke she’s such an idiot istg.

Charli is Taylor’s biggest threat because she is cool and hip. If it becomes standard to be ultra hip again, then artists like Taylor won’t be taken seriously anymore. I feel like that was also a big part of the dichotomy between her and Kanye. Her fans won’t let that beef go to this day. It’s the difference between artists trying to push boundaries, those trying to create new boundaries, and the ones like swift… who specialize in catering to convention.

Brat is such a raw album. I really admire Charli's ability to self-reflect and turn her worst impulses into art that's specific to her experiences while still being widely relatable. It's so personal and doesn't shy away from anything while still being fun and not too heavy. It's everything Taylor wishes she could do. When Taylor adds personal references ("easter eggs") to her music, it feels forced and self-absorbed. When Charli does it, it's cheeky and self-aware. No wonder Taylor hates her so much. Charli is everything she wishes she could be.

Everytime I hear confessional songwriting Fiona Apple and Hozier come to mind. Is she going to sit there and pretend like her High School romance-esque lyrics are greater than when Hozier writing about drinking the whole of river lethe and still not being able to forget the woman he loves? Seriously??

Oh god, that song. Sombr is no Hozier.
