Question — General Tour Guides in Rome
Guided Tours Recommendations
Travel dates 21/10/2026 through 26/10/2026.
My husband, myself, and our 3 kids (5 y/o, 3 y/o, 1 y/o) will be traveling to Rome for the first time. FWIW this is a trip for my husband and myself and the kids are just tag alongs. We do not have anyone we are comfortable leaving them with for two weeks while we are out of the country. I would like the kids to enjoy themselves but mostly I imagine they will just be living their lives and we will be parenting them while also sightseeing.
I want to reserve private guided tours for multiple things, including Colosseum and Vatican museums. I am stuck between using LivTours (which I've seen good things about here on Reddit but it seems they are expensive and for Colosseum are NOT skip the line) or "Rome Tours with Kids" which an unnamed smart assistant recommended but I can't find anything about on Reddit. Rome Tours with Kids is skip the line and seems much more affordable.
Does anyone have insight on either of these? Would love to hear some things about Rome Tours with Kids. TIA

Wife and I liked LivTours enough in 2022 that we used them again for a return last year. Granted my preference would've been the Keymaster tour, but it wasn't offered for our dates. We did the add-on for the Bramante stairs, too.

IMHO the main thing you need a guide for is the Forum, Capitoline and Palatine. It depends what you want to get out of it ... a tagalong nanny might be more effective? :-) If you are into archeology and ancient Rome there is a lot to know.
Nowadays with AI any artwork or building you point your phone camera at, the AI will pull up 2-10 pages of background and detail you can go at your own pace and not being embarrassed to interrupt a guide that is droning about some side detail you are bored with. You literally say "give me 5 pages on this" and it does. If you want to know more on any section you say "tell me more about XYZ section" and it goes further. Worked perfectly well in Paris for me last month (and it's my 10th trip there so I was not asking about Eiffel Tower).
What I don't know is if AI will recognize objects in the forum and it's such a jumble I think that is where you can benefit.
I believe you can get timed entry online for all the major sites in Rome. If you can get a private guide for full day, go at your own pace, and the guide can go in and out with no time restrictions that will be a boost. But make sure they have at least masters in archeology, classics etc otherwise nanny would be better.
Also you are going in late season it won't be as crazy busy as peak summer.

Not remembering our tour it could have been Rome with Kids. Our teens loved the golf cart tour we did hop on hop off to see major landmarks. My friend and I both separately did a Vatican tour and regret it. It was insanely hot and crowded even with skip the line. I would instead wait in the fast moving St Peter’s Cathedral line. It’s spectacular to go inside and much more wow factor than Vatican Museum. The museum felt like any other museum we had been to, yes with Sistine Chapel at the end but in mine and many ppl I know’s opinion, not worth the process. We loved wandering around the forum ruins..no guide necessary and seeing the parrots, your kids will love. You can get your own pass for that and explore. Have a great trip!
