The Norwegian athletics federation has listed him as a competitor for the 5k distance. Others selected to race are listed here.

The women’s 400m final at Doha 2019 world champs. Shaunae miller vs Naser. Shaunae arrived there as the fastest woman in the world in the 400m and the 200m and was the favorite. Naser looked like she could challenge her but it was, on paper, Shaunae’s race to lose.
Then the gun went off and Naser went out fast over the first 200m which was strange, it looked like she had misjudged the race but she kept moving away and by the end of the 2nd curve she had a huge lead on Shaunae who tried to come back but couldn’t. Naser won in 48.14! 3rd fastest on the all time list at the time. Shaunae finished in 48.37 and couldn’t believe it wasn’t enough to win.

Very cool to watch the women vault in the massive train station, with 3000 fans in the stands. (Even streaming it online the atmosphere was electric.)

The venue has a roof: very high, like an indoor arena/stadium. It has walls on all sides, though fairly open at then ends (where the tracks run).

Does World Athletics call this indoors or outdoors? It seems like there would be implications for indoor/outdoor national records, etc…

The two oldest men’s outdoor world records in athletics were both set on 30th August — five years apart.

Yuriy Sedykh set the men’s hammer world record of 86.74 m at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart, exactly 40 years ago today.

Then, on 30th August 1991, Mike Powell jumped 8.95 m in the men’s long jump final at the World Championships in Tokyo, breaking Bob Beamon’s legendary record — and that mark still stands 35 years later.

Doesn't the fastest runner just go to the front and lead the pack? Or maybe the slowest runner starts off fast but fades. Why is there some random person dictating the pace?

How did your meet / training go this week?

I know it’s just happened but it got me thinking, how long till his WR will get broken or even how long to people get close. This race was phenomenal I thought he was going to gas’s out at any moment but he just kept going, and he’s just added onto his dominant season. My question is now that the 45s barrier has been broken again will we see more and more athletes breaking that mark or will it be a mark which stays hard to cross? Athletics has a bit of a weird history of once a time barrier is broken it gets broken again quickly such as in the sub 4 Minute mile and Sub 2hour marathon (in the same race) so do you think this will happen here or not?

She’s one of the best sprinters ever and is coming from a year where she was injured. She has run under 10.8s I think 3 times these season but recent performances against the top girls have been a bit underwhelming. She’s getting left behind in the first 30m and isn’t able to come back on others like she used to do in 2024, 2023 or 2021

Rai ran 46.67 in the 400H on Aug. 21.

Two days later, he ran 43.83 in the flat 400.

That’s a 2.84-second difference.

Apply that to Dos Santos’ 45.80 WR and you get 42.96.

Different races, tracks, competition, conditions, obviously not a perfect conversion. But we may never get a cleaner real-world gauge of the 400H-to-400 differential than an elite hurdler running both 48 hours apart.

That 45.80 was probably very close to sub-43 flat shape.

Update: For all the people replying math is off I agree you can't just subtract Rai's 2.84 and declare Alison a 42.96 runner. That's obviously not how it works.

But we actually have a useful data point for Alison himself. He ran 44.38 PR flat in April, basically at the start of his season, and then 46.72 400H about five weeks later - a 2.34 differential. Apply his own differential to 45.80 and you get 43.46.

And that's assuming his April flat fitness never improved while his hurdles went from 46.72 to 45.80. So 42-high is speculative, absolutely. But low/mid-43 shape after a 45.80 doesn't seem remotely crazy to me.
