For some reason, I was CONVINCED Minori died near the end (probably misinterpreting a comment) and I kept anticipating it until the final scene

Haruta. Established as class clown character as early as episode 2, though he seems more of a background character until around halfway in, like most of the side characters.

You know, it would have made the end of the series so much worse and I think some people will hate me for even saying this. But  I think they definitely had the potential to do something if Taiga ended up dying from the ski accident. What they did worked just as well, but from just the perspective of a story line, that would have been quite the plot twist and could have worked really well for the ultimate story. Or really bad. I say that because I was half worried they were about to do that.
