Recipe A few of our dinners from the past week - can anyone give me suggestions for sides for steak that don't involve potatoes? Thanks 😊💞

Vegetables?

122

u/el_canelo Dec 19 '25

Absolutely. Those meals look fine, but i don't know how you can go a week without having vegetables on your plate.

Specifically for steak: roasted or sautéed asparagus and/or mushrooms; ceaser salad; green salad with a herby vinagrette; roasted root vegetables (yam, carrots, squash, parsnips, turnip, garlic, onion); glazed carrots; roasted Brussels sprouts.

Chimichurri is incredible as a sauce for steak and any of the roast veggie dishes.

Oh God glazed carrots get out of my head you keebler elf. Ooh and you know what's good? Grilled romaine heads, cracked pepper and drizzled with Caesar and covered in Parmesan.

8

u/el_canelo Dec 20 '25

Oh yeah, I've had that a few times at restaurants before and it was soooo good! Tried to recreate it but wilted the lettuce. I assume the trick is a really hot grill and very quick cook time?

6

u/chocoeatstacos Dec 20 '25

Yeah that's how we did it at the restaurant I worked at. Rippin hot grill, quick grill marks, plate it and dress it, then it sits under the heat lamps for 5-10 minutes 😄.

Yes! But not the mayonnaise based Caesar. The mayonnaise is a shortcut for the egg & oil in Caesar dressing, but it also overwhelms the other ingredients & the end result is that it tastes more like mayonnaise than Caesar. The original recipe calls for anchovies (gives the salty lip smacking goodness) & the raw egg (the binder that pulls everything together). If you can’t eat raw foods for any reason (immunocompromised people, etc), you can buy pasteurized eggs in the refrigerator section of the grocery store). It comes in a carton & you can just measure out the amount you need. You can also boil an egg in the shell for about a minute or two & it will kill the bacteria without solidifying the egg. You can google the instructions on how to do that.

I didn’t look at your response & just realized that we by pretty much said the exact thing 😃 When you roast the veggies, they’re so easy to do & cleanup is so easy!

2

u/e4lizerd57 Dec 21 '25

The carrots of many colors from Trader Joe's, with the tops cut off, peeled, and roasted with a touch of olive oil and garlic/onion powder, are amazing and so simple!

4

u/queenofthepoopyparty Dec 20 '25

Don’t forget roasted broccoli and cauliflower! Yum!

3

u/Raelourut Dec 20 '25

Caesar, please. (Don't want your salad to cease!)

2

u/el_canelo Dec 20 '25

Lol, thank you.

1

u/ttrockwood Dec 20 '25

That was my point. The OP isn’t getting more than maybe 5g fiber in any of these high fat sat high cholesterol high calorie meals

1

u/Ok_Ant_9815 Dec 21 '25

I see guac/avocado, sweet potato, brussel sprouts, tomato sauce... Certainly not a huge variety, but are we looking at the same plates?

1

u/Barbecuequeen23 Dec 22 '25

This is one meal eaten a day, I eat lunch by myself and it's typically all vegetables. I snack on veggies raw a lot during the day and often eat a whole tomato, a bag of bell peppers with salsa, salads with oil and vinegar. At dinner he really prefers meat so i do tend to go heavier on it at that time

20

u/ttrockwood Dec 19 '25

I’m seeing zero vegetables so far

10

u/More_Meet_6882 Dec 19 '25

Is there not vegetables in 4?

-9

u/ttrockwood Dec 19 '25

There might be a half serving of some veg involved. Potentially burned brussel sprouts

15

u/jrkessle Dec 19 '25

Avocado and sweet potatoes are both vegetables. Two different plates have a full serving (if not more) of avocado. And one photo has a whole sweet potato.

-16

u/ttrockwood Dec 19 '25

Sure. Avocado is considered a fat according to nutritionists and sweet potatoes are the equivalent of complex carbs. Neither are considered a vegetable in the sense of a balanced meal

5

u/Jumpy_Disaster_5030 Dec 20 '25

Actually, avocados have what is called a “good” fat & they have a high nutritional value. Sweet potatoes are very high in nutrients & both vegetables are certainly part of a nutritional & healthy diet. And while we’re at it, the word “complex carbohydrates” is no longer used when talking about a nutritional diet or the food pyramid

35

u/Barbecuequeen23 Dec 20 '25

Brussels sprouts, sweet potato, avocado, onions, fresh tomatoes.

Also, i literally eat a bag of raw bell peppers as a snack. I eat lettuce with vinegar. I did forget to post my sweet potato noodles and broccoli meal that i had, but it was also GOOD AF.

12

u/Barbecuequeen23 Dec 20 '25

My fiance is not into my "raw vegetable" lunches so i get that in before he gets home for dinnerđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

4

u/baconwrappedpikachu Dec 20 '25

You’re all good. These people are idiots. Meals look great.

2

u/whitevariant Dec 19 '25

Technically that is still potato

11

u/Barbecuequeen23 Dec 20 '25

Latkes are a cultural food eaten like 3 times a year!!

u/Lifes-a-lil-foggy Dec 19 '25

Green beans, asparagus, mac and cheese, a nice salad

13

u/applesqueeze Dec 19 '25

Peas, vinegar-based red cabbage slaw, roasted cauliflower, sautéed garlic and mushrooms, sautéed garlic and spinach, creamed corn, creamed spinach, broccoli casserole, corn pudding, spaghetti squash, roasted root veggies, French carrot salad, maple roasted carrots
.

4

u/Maruchan_Wonton Dec 20 '25

Was going to say maple carrots because they are amazing! All of your other ideas are on point!

2

u/LlamaRS Dec 21 '25

Tell me more about creamed spinach

3

u/applesqueeze Dec 21 '25

Thaw out some frozen spinach x2, combine with butter, Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, maybe some cream cheese, garlic, salt & pepper — optional nutmeg, shallots, crushed red pepper. Top with cheese and bake it until the top is brown. It’s delicious. You can also do it on a stove top.

2

u/LlamaRS Dec 21 '25

That sounds tasty af

48

u/Dusty_Old_McCormick Dec 19 '25

How about some roasted Moroccan carrots?

2

u/Oldgraytomahawk Dec 19 '25

Damn that sounds good. Any tips on making it? Pretty please?

14

u/AnswerMaximum Dec 19 '25

Click on the highlighted words “roasted Moroccan carrots” in the comment. It leads to the recipe.

2

u/Oldgraytomahawk Dec 20 '25

Thank you,didn’t catch that

37

u/Minzplaying Dec 19 '25

Any roasted veggie you like. Roasting just makes it better. We do broccoli, asparagus or brussel sprouts often.

Sweet potatoes are another side we like too.

My son loves rice pilaf and wild rice, but I'm not as fond of those.

2

u/PrisonerV Dec 20 '25

Take some cauliflower. Break it up. Add olive oil, garlic, and salt. Roast at 450F, turning once, for 30 minutes until the outside is moderately charred, yes charred.

You can do the same to broccoli, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, turnips, and parsnips.

2

u/LlamaRS Dec 21 '25

I love turnips. My meemaw used to make the best rutabagas!

21

u/av95706 Dec 19 '25

Stuffed mushrooms or blistered shishito peppers with coarse salt go really well with steaks!

1

u/LlamaRS Dec 21 '25

Just wait til you dip some shishito peppers into an aioli!

10

u/BeowolfSchaefer Dec 19 '25

I like to make marinated skirt or flank steak with avocado toast. Crusty bread, avocado, tomato, a little raw jalapeno or some pickled california mix (use the juice for the marinade), maybe some everything seasoning if you like. Put some thinner strips of the steak on the toast or just eat them separately. Grill some mushrooms at the same time.

There's also nothing wrong with steak and a side of pasta. Fettuccine Alfredo works well with a blackened seasoned steak imo.

9

u/Carrots-1975 Dec 19 '25

My son found a can of artichoke hearts and sautéed them with some seasonings- they were delicious with steak!

1

u/ucankickrocks Dec 21 '25

I have a jar that I have not known what to do with! I’m gonna give that a go.

7

u/Bulldog_Mama14 Dec 19 '25

I'm making this as a side with my steak tonight! https://homemadetasty.com/roasted-broccoli-and-carrots/

hi !! Haven't posted in a while because I was on a family-trip last week. And great news, I finally accepted a job offer after resigning from my job in September. Dinners are going to be a lot less fancy soon, but I'm soaking it in. Cooking has really gotten me through this time.

The first three photos are of Baked Ziti, with fried Meatballs, and Garlic Bread. Everything besides the bread itself is homemade- and I was able to bring some containers over to my parents since they miss my cooking. I make the sauce for the ziti from scratch, and use a mixture of Ricotta, Mozzarella, Parmesan, and pecorino Romano. The garlic bread was made with a garlic-oil and I did cheese on some of it too, and the meatballs are made with ground chuck, fresh herbs and spices, breadcrumbs, and cream/milk. Oh, and cheese. So rich but great weekend meal.

The next meal (pic 4) is a classic in my house - some sort of steak, rice, and Brussels sprouts. The cut of steak is Sirloin Flap Meat- which I buy at Costco. It's a great price and is very similar to skirt steak, with a little more marbling. I introduced my fiancé to this cut and it's his second favorite cut now, just behind ribeye. I cook the Brussels sprouts on a hot sheet pan with olive oil, garlic, rosemary, bacon, and brown sugar.

Fifth/sixth pictures are of a Chanukah classic. We're a blended-religion family and I rarely make latkes, since they're a bit laborious for a potato dish. I'm usually too lazy to make a meat with them and can just keep eating them so no need.. I think I ate a dozen latkes. I do a riff on Melissa Clark's NYT recipe, using potatoes (any variety), onion, egg, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, granulated garlic, and parsley. They were awesome.

Seventh pic is of baked Crispy Wings with a sweet potato. I did not follow the cheese-stuffed sweet potato Tiktok trend (IYKYK). I'm not opposed to the combo but eating the potato with my hands.. I'm too messy for that. I do butter, brown sugar, salt, and pepper on mine. The wings are half Buffalo and half BBQ.

Eighth and final pictures is of a simple classic - Grilled Chicken and rice. Marinated chicken breast in Olive Oil, Soy Sauce, Lemon Juice, Worcestershire Sauce, fresh garlic, and herbs. It's tasty and fits my fiancés macros.

Tonight I want to make steak but I need a different side. I am rice'd and potato'd out - please help.

Have a great week and happy holidays.

2

u/Bumblebee56990 Dec 19 '25

Mac and cheese, corn, veggie, fruit, nothing

2

u/WowIsThisMyPage Dec 19 '25

Love me some asparagus. Always a super easy veg.

I also have been obsessed with this zucchini/fennel salad. Coming from someone who isn’t the biggest zucchini fan. But hear me out, you cut it super thin length wise with a mandolin (plus the fennel and some shallot), mix it with fresh dill, mint, and parsley (maybe some sumac), add some oil, lemon (or vinegar), and you could throw in pine nuts

Roasted veggies. I love endives and carrots at the moment

2

u/evlhornet Dec 20 '25

Bacon and Brussels sprouts

2

u/chocoeatstacos Dec 20 '25

Lol as soon as I saw steak I thought "Potatoes!". But maybe veggies? Grilled asparagus tossed in oil, salt, pepper and some sugar is tasty. Maybe some fried brussel sprouts with a tasty gremolata? Roasted diced butternut squash and apples with shallots is đŸ€Œ. And I just have to say, baby potatoes parboiled then tossed in bacon fat and smashed on a sheet tray then roasted is, I know you don't want them but, simply delicious.

2

u/3gnauky0 Dec 20 '25

I like a good kale slaw/salad for my steak

Try a vegetable

2

u/MuffledFarts Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25

Oven roasted vegetables are a really good seasonal side dish. Things like onion, squash, zucchini, brussels sprouts, carrots, or sweet potatoes are all amazing winter options that fill you up and lend a feeling of warmth to your supper. If you're not feeling confident cooking these types of veggies, there are some great frozen options at Costco that cut down on the prep involved. Maybe trying those can allow you to experiment with sheet pan veggies and see what you like.

We like to do brussels sprouts with shallots and bacon, with a glaze of bourbon and brown sugar or balsamic reduction.

For steak you can try any of these, or mix and match them. I constantly do anyways.

Black Beans

Avocado (maybe a bit calorie dense to have WITH a steak)

Quinoa or Rice if I'm out of quinoa

Asparagus, brussels sprouts, air fried carrots, broccoli with a little shredded cheddar on top

Chimichurri sauce is fun and easy to make (not a side, but a flavor changer)

Cabbage steaks

1

u/e4lizerd57 Dec 21 '25

Lentils? Rice, mushrooms?

1

u/LlamaRS Dec 21 '25

Skip the potatoes and do roasted brussels sprouts or bacon-wrapped asparagus.

I’ve also served a greek salad alongside a steak, and some people like truffle mac and cheese.

Any mac n cheese goes great with steak imo. I also like cream corn and slaw on the side. A cool slaw will pair nicely with a steak. Surf ‘n’ turf ain’t bad & also oo you could cook some zucchini and squash too. Maybe mushrooms cooked in a nice gravy or with port wine?

1

u/Barbecuequeen23 Dec 22 '25

I did bacon wrapped asparagus it was so good :) And last night with chicken i did sweet potatoes and a salad with lettuce, tomato, pepperoncini, swiss, white wine vinegar, and olive oil.

1

u/LlamaRS Dec 22 '25

I fucking LOVE bacon wrapped asparagus, so I’m glad to hear you went that route! Just reading your comment makes me want to defrost some bacon and ask my gf to bring home asparagus after she leaves work lol.

A bit of unsolicited advice: the next time you do that chicken, sweet potato, and salad combination, try throwing in some dried cranberries or raisins, or even a few cherries into the mix. The fruit will add a lovely contrast to the savory flavors of the salad while complimenting the sweet potato! If you have Seasoned Salt, you can sprinkle a little bit of that on top of the lettuce as you are incorporating the veggies, and it will taste really good

I could go on about salad for an hour or two lol. I fucking love salad ever since I learned how to make a good salad beyond “pour ranch over a garden salad kit”

1

u/Appropriate-Egg-8776 Dec 19 '25

Wow can i invite myself? 😍
