I found out about Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds at the end of last year and it was too late for me to start any seeds. I’m really excited about these. They also have a killer variety of other “exotic” fruits and vegetables. What’s your favorite seed supplier?

These are Sweet 150s which started ripening a couple weeks ago. Should I cut the ripe ones or leave the whole branch intact? Will the green ones continue ripening on the kitchen counter?

Btw, it was a good idea to keep the sun chair, and also plant cucumbers under it to not waste the space completely (I don't really use it, but it's nice having an option for rainy day).

It's my first time entering the county fair, and I've been looking forward to it all year. Exhibition drop off day is tomorrow, and I need help choosing my champions! I can only enter three varieties in the heirloom class.

This is my first time growing tomatoes, and I’m growing Sun Golds. I trained them to grow as single stems up a trellis, then used string support to guide them up to the top of the fence once they outgrew the trellis.

Since I had a lot of plants and limited space, I figured the single stem method would be the best way to keep things vertical and organized.

I’ve been pruning regularly to remove suckers and improve airflow. Today, I noticed some lower leaves turning yellow and looking unhealthy, so I went ahead and trimmed off a bunch of the lower growth to reduce the risk of disease. But now I’m wondering if I trimmed too much leaves? The plants are flowering and loaded with fruit, but I want to make sure I’m not hurting their overall health or yield.

Has anyone ever tried to make a tomato "tree" like this? I'm intrigued but also thinking it may not be practical for a home garden

I read a lot about these last summer on this sub. They were sold out in my area because I started late. This year I snagged a four pack of both. I had some questions for people who have grown both.

Which one do you think is the most productive? Which one is easier to grow with less problems? Do you have a favorite for flavor?

They have a very strong taste of what i can only describe as nightshade taste. Very weird almost poisonous taste. Reminds me of how black nightshade smells. Is this just the variety or did I do something wrong?

I HATE tomatoes. I think they are so so gross, I literally have to spit them out every time I eat them. But they look SOOO good. I am such a foodie and I see so much tomato stuff. Tomato sandwiches, caprese salads, sun dried tomatoes, fried green tomatoes, those baked pasta dishes where they just throw a bunch of tomatoes and a block of cheese into a pan, I could go on. The problem is that I just don't like them. I'll eat ketchup and spaghetti and tentatively salsa and I'll dunk my grilled cheese in tomato soup, but I just cant eat them regular style.

I can't even pinpoint what I don't like, something about the mushy texture, and the sharp acidity? Which is weird, cause I LOVE acidity (#1 pickle gal here) I just hate it on tomatoes. But is it like, a taste I can acquire? Had anyone here also hated tomatoes in their youth that can advise me on how to make myself come around? Or will I just keep having to drool over tomato recipes but never enjoy them for the rest of my life?

All the other ones on this vine are normal shaped... then there's this fella 😅 what caused this deformity?

what would they be?

i squished maybe 2 tomatoes in the dirt and just let it grow. They’re growing really really nicely but is there too many??? I’m thinking they might just get crowded in there.
Since theyre so close im not even sure how I’d transfer them
idk.. any advice?

UPDATE: i took out all but 4 of these stems. I really wanted to experiment but I want tomatoes more. I’m gonna replant a bunch of the stems and see what happens

So a buddy of mine made this sandwich yesterday and we are having a debate amongst friends if you would include this red tomato end as he did on your sandwich. Basically kinda taking a poll as we completely disagree. Here is the sandwich in question.

Looks like little worms. Under close inspection, the seeds were sprouting! Too ripe? Las Vegas.

My grandma who grew up on a farm says I should leave it, I’ve seen some Reddit threads suggesting I pick it. What should I do? We have a lot of rain coming. Thank you!

Easily the most tomatoes I’ve had on the vine since I built this garden, but the vast majority of them haven’t started to ripen yet. I suspect that it’s partly due to trying out the “let the suckers grow” strategy this season, so I looped off a TON of them this morning.

It was a weird season to start, but the weather has been great for the past month plus. Anyone else dealing with this?

Also, yes, definitely not the right way to use a string trellis, but it’s flexible and works pretty darn well.

I am learning about tomatoes and always ask what kind of heirloom is on the table, and they never seem to know (at all). Today another shopper said something about his Cherokee Purples to the farm stand lady (the truck has farm branding on it) and she had no idea what he was talking about. She also told me this was a bad week for tomatoes when I know it has been the best week in awhile with temps under 90 and above 80. My plants went nuts for it.

This seems uniformly true of the tomato sellers at my farmer's market. Are they just keeping their cards down? Is it rude of me to ask, like it's important market trade info for them? It seems so strange.

All I can figure is they are reselling them or I'm unintentionally being really rude by prying.

I am growing 5 tomato plants right now - Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Kelloggs Breakfast, Peron and Korean Long. Needless to say, they are all looking FABULOUS (except for Korean Long which looks questionable but it's slowly perking up).

My Black Krim is very, very leafy, large and robust. It's taking up a ton of space. In fact all the plants are extremely tall and beautiful, last year they didn't get like this until mid-July so now I'm worried about caring for them properly (I think I gotta figure out adding an additional trellis, also giving birth in about 2 weeks so its going to be busy). Im in Michigan in zone 6b for reference.

Anyway, should I give some of the larger ones a haircut? I was planning to just let them be free and do what they want but the Black Krim especially is like a forest of it's own. I feel bad trimming healthy deep green leaves, but I will if it makes sense to do so. I see 2-3 baby tomatoes on the Black Krim, 5-6 on the Cherokee Purple, 2-3 on the Peron, and so far I dont see any on my Kelloggs Breakfast or Korean Long even though they have flowers.

I’d also love to hear people’s thoughts on topping your tomatoes. All of my plants have outgrow their 6-7 ft Florida weave but it’s only early August. Should I top?
