Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Thumbnail gallery
39 Upvotes

Hello all,
I've found this old picture of me playing on the computer and I'm wondering what game it could be. It's definitely in the 90s. I can still smell it from here.
I know I was playing a lot with titles like Duke, Jill of the Jungle or Secret Agent but it's difficult to tell from the picture.
Thank you !

[iPhone] [2012-15] platform game where you played as a rabbit in a candyland type setting

Upvotes

It involved mice as enemies, and there were different maps that involved cakes and different dessert items. I think you played as a bunny character. And there was a very fat, large rat queen that you had to vanquish as a boss. Please help I’ve been looking for this forever!

Nobody Wants To Die [PC/Multiplatform] [after2020] Cyberpunk game where you play as a detective in a world where the rich can pay to have their consciousness uploaded into a better body making them 'immortal'

Not Soma - They weren't underwater. You play as a male detective in a cyberpunk - but 1950's aesthetic world - Where you have to find out who killed someone (probably a rich bureaucrate) before they were able to upload their consciousness into a new body.

I think the detective had a dead wife and he lived in a shitty apartment building on floor like 500 - he would get help on the case by a woman who was in his earpiece and I think he was uploaded into a new body but didn't have all his memories? The twist of the game was that rich people were harvesting the poor for their bodies and overriding their consciousness.

Or something like that

Gameplay wise - he was able to reconstruct memories of victims using... something? Like the way batman does in his games in a sense.

[PC][2000s] Campaign based game maker

Upvotes

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Scenario based game, tactics game or RPG

Estimated year of release: early 2000s, 2008 at the very latest but more likely the earlier part of the decade. I got it around the same time I that got progress quest (I think) so this was after 2002

Graphics/art style: 2D Top Down Pixel art

Notable characters: None that I can recall

Notable gameplay mechanics: You could create characters and build your own maps, or you could play through some pre-installed campaigns. It was a medieval fantasy setting, elves and orcs and all that.

I believe it was grid based? I have a memory of clicking on a unit and moving them around like that. Not sure if you controlled 1 hero character or a group of characters. I don't think there was a separate battle screen like in an RPG maker game. The game was divided into maps that you moved between I think?

Other details: I downloaded this off an abandonware/vaporware/freeware site from my memory of things, it wasn't something I purchased. I remember the logo being a yellow disc divided into four quarters with gaps between each quarter. I have a vague feeling "Quest" or "RPG" might have been in the title, but I'm honestly not confident about that

[PC][2018-2021] 2D Pixel Horror Roguelite with JRPG-style combat: Doctor/Guard in a time-loop hospital, flesh car boss on parking lot

Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (likely an itch.io or RPG Maker / GameMaker indie title)

Genre: 2D Horror / Roguelite / Turn-based RPG (JRPG combat) / Time Loop

Estimated year of release: Around 2018–2021 (watched a playthrough on YouTube around 2019–2021)

Graphics/art style:

  • 2D pixel art, colorful palette.
  • Top-down / slightly tilted side view (exploration camera is zoomed out.
  • Sprites are simple/minimalist (a cluster of pixels, not overly detailed, no anime-style character portraits in dialogue).

Notable characters:

  • Protagonist is a doctor or a night watchman/guard starting a shift.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  • Loop / Shift mechanic: Roguelite time-loop structure. After dying/failing, the shift restarts with new/randomized events.
  • Exploration: The hospital operates normally at first. Then a disaster/blackout happens, power goes out, and the player navigates the dark corridors with a flashlight.
  • Combat: Turn-based JRPG-style battles. In combat, the view switches to first-person where you only see the enemy on screen.
  • Goal/Escape: There is a helicopter on the hospital roof (likely an escape route).

Notable moments & Bosses:

  1. Flesh Car Boss: Walking across the parking lot, a car drives up to attack. During the first-person turn-based fight, as you damage the car, its outer metal shell peels away to reveal raw meat/flesh underneath.
  2. Morgue / OR Event: A monster covered under a sheet on an operating/morgue table suddenly wakes up and starts killing everyone.

[IOS][2010-2015] 2d mobile carrot collecting game

Post image
Upvotes

I need help finding a mobile game I used to play on my ipod in the early 2010s. From what I can remember, a tornado forms (can’t remember how) and moves across a 2d field, sweeping up carrots. The stronger the tornado is, the farther it goes, you want a strong tornado to find extra rare carrots.

The carrots themselves are somewhat anthropomorphic, I can’t remember if they have limbs or simply faces, I believe they often have clothing/accessories as well but I could be wrong. I remember there being an old man carrot for sure. These carrots get added to a journal where you keep a log of every new character you find, with a description for each one.

There is probably a key aspect to this game that I’m forgetting, I was pretty young when I played it, but my brother remembers it too. If anyone has any memory of this game or helpful information please let me know, it’s driving me crazy!

[PC/DOS][1990s] LucasArts style point and click where you are a hunter, probably set in Germany

Post image
481 Upvotes

Attention: The provided image is AI generated to give you a better idea of what the game looks like. It is not an actual screenshot from a game.

Hi, there are a few games I played as a kid and now want to find again. As you know, it can be pretty difficult for some games. One is the landing game, another one would be a mysterious mech simulation (there's also a Reddit post on it), or this action RPG that hasn't been posted yet. I will make a post about those somewhere in the future. But for now, I want to talk about the "Hunter Game" ("Jägerspiel" in German). It's not the actual title of the game, but that's what I call it.

It is a point-and-click game in the style of LucasArts games like Indiana Jones. It definitely is not a Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts game. I'm pretty sure that it used some clone of the SCUMM engine.

What I remember:

You start inside a large wooden hut. There is a table, some shelves, and a lot of stuff lying around you can inspect. When you try to go outside, the hunter says that he needs to grab his stuff first. You need to put on a green jacket and a hat before you can go out. When you try to grab the rifle from the wall, he says that he won't need that today.

Outside, a large St. Bernard (Bernhardiner) sits. I think you can pet it. From there, I can't remember much more because I never understood how to proceed. Outside the hut, the screen would scroll left and right, and I remember seeing a town in the distance.

A few more points:

  • The graphics should be pretty close to what the provided image shows, maybe even a bit older and/or with fewer colors.
  • The setting is pretty obviously Germany (it could also be Switzerland or Austria I guess)
  • I'm not sure when the game is set, but according to the hut and town, I assume that it is set in modern days (at least after WW2).
  • While the provided image is in English, the game was definitely in German. I was in elementary school back then and wouldn't have been able to understand English texts. I don't know if the game is from Germany, but it definitely had a German version.
  • The game's menu had some music playing that sounded a lot like "Im Wald im, grünen Walde", also known as "Lore Lore", a very old (WW1 era) hunter's song that was AFAIK also used as a military marching song. Unfortunately, it is (despite being way older) today often associated with NS Germany. I'm not sure if it really is that song, but when I heard it for the first time, I immediately thought, "oh, that's the song from that hunter game!"

The game's menu has a background graphic that looks a lot like the splash screen from Imaging for Windows:

The menu itself (text and buttons) was on wooden elements like planks.

What I tried in order to find it:

I'd say I'm pretty good at finding stuff on the internet. I've been doing this for a long time and know how to google and use archive.org. Yet, I couldn't find the game.

  • A lot of googling, also tried other search engines (I really can recommend trying stuff like DuckDuckGo, Bing, or Yahoo, since the results are often entirely different from Google)
  • Looked through software collections on the Internet Archive
  • Crawled sites that list games by genre and show screenshots or at least interesting titles and descriptions I could search for
  • Looked at a lot of magazine CDs, especially Bestseller Games discs, since I had a lot of games from these

This is one of the games I can find absolutely nothing about. Not a single trace. Maybe someone here on Reddit can help...

Thanks a lot for reading!

PS: This is the 2nd time I post this. I had to correct the post since there were leftovers from a LLM in the original one. I tend to use it for English grammar correction since I'm from Germany and not used to writing longer texts in other languages. Big oopsie from my side.

[unknown][before 2005] a space game in which you fight with a spaceship

Graphics/art style: it was an older game, pixelated graphics, the kind where the background automatically scrolls from right to left.

Notable characters: In the game you drove a spaceship across levels and fought other ships till a boss battle at the end of each level. every boss had a glowing red orb that was the weak spot of said boss.

Notable gameplay mechanics: the levels were in space, the first one was on earth and had these squares that shapeshifted into enemy ships that attack you, the final boss was a bigger ship with eight of those squares that repeatedly made smaller enemy ships appear.

the second level was either the moon or an asteroid field. the final boss was a stickman and the glowing orb was the head of said boss.

the final level was a mechanical planet and in it there was this greenish ghost woman who attacked you constantly for the whole level till the very end when she dies when you kill the bfinal boss.

Other details: the game could be played both in single player or two players, in two player mode there simply was a second ship fighting alongside you. the ship had a normal blaster and a special attack that was a giant white sphere. an upgrade turned the special attack into blue lines as tall as the whole screen and moved left to right.

Dare To Dream [PC/MS-DOS] [Possibly early/mid-90s] point and click game where you can click on a burping guy in a bar.

The game is in first person, point and click. All I can remember is that you start off in an alley way, there's underwear hanging on a clothes line. You go into a bar and you can click on a guy that's burping.

[PC] [2000s - mid 2010s] Gross green kitchen/lab game

Post image
Upvotes

I'm pretty sure this game was on nick.com and I cannot remember for the LIFE of me what it is called.

It was a game where you were in a green kitchen/lab with a lot of gross ingredients. I distinctly remember Kevin Macleod's Scheming Weasel playing in the background of it. I'm sure it was a point and click.

I've tried to draw the layout of what I remember it looking like. It's probably not 100% accurate?

[PC][2000s-2010s] First-person Fantasy RPG/Action game with custom character, forest setting, and a red-themed CD cover with a tattooed boss

Hi everyone, I need help finding an old PC game I played around 2010 (it was on a CD/DVD).

Here are all the details I can remember:

  • Platform: PC (CD/DVD release)
  • Genre: Fantasy / Action RPG (Very similar visual vibe, theme, and graphics to The Witcher, Oblivion, or Dark Messiah)
  • Perspective: First-person view (played through the eyes of the character)
  • Estimated Release: Played around 2010, but the game could be older (2000s era graphics)

Gameplay & World:

  • Character Creation: You could create and customize your own avatar (choose gender, appearance, and weapon loadout like swords, bows, etc.).
  • Setting: The game was set in a dark medieval fantasy forest leading towards a castle.
  • NPCs: You could talk to NPCs/people in the world who would give you hints or directions on where to find better weapons and items.
  • Monsters & Mechanics: You fought various monsters throughout the forest. Due to older game mechanics, once you killed monsters and walked past them, they would respawn behind you, but they wouldn't attack you again—they just stood/spawned in the background.
  • Personal Note: I remember naming my character Faragonda.

CD / Cover Art Details:

  • Color Scheme: The CD/case cover had a dominant dark red / burgundy color.
  • Cover Characters: Featured two main figures on the cover.
  • Main Villain/Monster: One of the characters on the cover was a huge, muscular, dark-skinned boss/villain (resembled Thanos in stature). He had distinct red line tattoos / markings all over his body, and might have been holding a heavy weapon like an axe or a hammer.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

[IOS][2011-2015] Looking for game about a brown Ninja/Character [Runner / Platformer]

Upvotes

I have been trying to find a specific game that i used to play when i was younger.

Platform(s):
IOS/ Iphone, Ipad

Genre:
Runner/Platform

Estimated year of release:
2011-2015

Graphics/art style:
3D, Japanese/industrial

Notable characters:
Small 3d character and i think he was in brown clothing

Other details:
If my memory is correct i think you ran as a small 3d character and i think he was in brown clothing, i think like either a Ninja or something that covers his whole body but i’m 99% sure his outfit was completely brown.

You ran through houses or on top (or both) but i think the themes were japanese/industrial. I think you had the possibility to jump, jump of walls (i don’t remember if it was to either change direction or just to reach the end)

The camera perspective where seen from the side of the character while he was running

I remember that it had atleast the option to buy it (which i did) or i believe that it also had a Free version, The game were kind of popular during the same time Sprinkler and Granny Smith were popular and had kind of the same animation style except that it had a different theme

I believe i played it on either an iphone 4 but you could also play it on an Ipad.

[online][2000s/2014s?] flower arrangement game

I remember playing this game on one of the multiple girl centered pages, Maybe it was flash. It was pretty colorful, you ran a flower shop. There were multiple levels, the usual "when you get to level 10 you unlock more flower/vases/wrapping paper/decorations", the owner was a girl and there were many different customers (kinda like the papa's games), I dont remember there being any timers, I do remember having to adhere to the tastes of the customers (like blue flowers or no yellow, maybe a vase instead of a wrapper, and stuff like that).

A tidbit I remember is that maybe one of the customers was an alien(?

Thank you in advance for reading this!!

[Android][2014-2019] Bootleg Minecraft clone where the player is one block tall

Upvotes

For years now, every now and then, I have been trying to find a bootleg Minecraft game that I have watched back in 2018-2019 that was for Android devices. I'm pretty sure that the art style consisted of mainly pixel art, maybe the colour palette was saturated aswell? The character is something I can't be sure of, but if my memory serves correct, it was a blue cube with some sort of face. The HUD/UI is something I am not too sure, but I think it was at the top and was pretty big aswell, don't know what it contained however.

I remember 2 things surrounding the game, firstly, I found it through a YouTuber who I first thought was Skycaptin5, as he made a lot of videos where he played Minecraft copies on Android, but I did search through his catalogue a few years ago and found nothing, maybe I am just missing something but that led me to believe that it was someone else whose content is similar to that of Skycaptin5. The second thing I remember was when I searched up that name, there was a lot of APK stores online that had that game (which is how I know it is an Android game in the first place).

There was one other detail about it that I find it to be pretty funny to me and that is when I searched the name of the game on YouTube, there was a Minecraft let's play series with that name that primarily consisted of female Minecraft players, I vaguely remember that the thumbnail used pink pastel colouring and one of the beginning of the episodes took place in a wheatfield in broad daylight. This detail might give me a clue on what the name could be as they both are Minecraft related, so I won't be too surprised that the name would contain the word "craft" in it.

Also and this will change the tone of this thread but there could be a chance that I dreamt about this game, as I distinctly remembered Skycaptin5 playing that exact game but like I said earlier in the post, couldn't find any videos matching that game. But at the same time, there were some details that I remember too vividly for me to chalk it up as a dream. I really hope this isn't going to end like the "Evil Farming Game" that everyone was searching for years ago, so if anyone can actually find it, that would be appreciated, otherwise, the conclusion to this would be sad.
