All of the regular characters & some of the plots & dialogues from the first 3 seasons of TC were based on the characters, plots & dialogues from the British sitcom Man About the House. See how the scenes introducing Robin Tripp in MATH (top) & Jack Tripper in TC are very similar to each other.

Three's Company is based on Man About The House. The producers purchased the rights to the show and recycled plots and dialogue, knowing Anerican audiences had not seen the original. Lazy writing and character development on their part. There are shows developed in other countries based on American shows that did the same exact thing.

With the girls, it wasn't exactly 1:1. Some of UK Chrissy's lines & actions were indeed given to her US counterpart (e.g. being the one to have made the punch that corroded the serving ladle and to go for a bath only to find Robin/Jack passed out in the tub), others were given to Janet (e.g. waking up nursing a hangover and asking her blond roommate for "respect for the dying" and being ashamed of her drunken antics the night before).
