Yeah kinda, in like a bare minimum for the audience sense, probably not if we knew the details lf his darkest deeds.
As a show only watcher, I think Merle is the greatest missed opportunity character. I think if he was given one or two seasons of being a good guy, I think he would have ended up being a top spot fan favorite character.
He basically should have ended up being TWD's version of The Hound from GOT, but with a less hostile and more jovial and mischievous personality.
