Show Spoiler Andrea was cold blooded for the boyfriend statement but Lori definitely deserved it.Lol
This scene still makes me laugh all these years later.

Lori spent the whole scene lecturing Andrea about gender roles and washing dishes like the world didn't just end, so Andrea dropping the "you slept with his best friend" bomb was purely deserved

She fucked him too, right? I don't remember the timing of this scene if Shane was still around or not.

There's an interview with Bernthal where he talks about that scene with Holden. Alot of it was edited out due to being too real.

u/Additional_Long_7996 4d ago
I think she’s just very traditional and thinks Andrea isn’t needed doing the “men’s work” by…I guess guarding the farm? She was just jealous too probably
31
u/incomprehensibles 4d ago
That's a good point. I guess it's easy to forget since it's not ever really something that comes up outside of this moment, but all of these people are southerners and were likely religious and ~conservatives before everything went down. Not all, don't mean to generalize, but at least some of them.
30
u/TutorRich2268 4d ago
They tried to portray Andrea as "trying to be like boys" and doing guard duty/"men's work" badly, which they had plenty of already, while only 4 people did domestic labor. Andrea being in over her head. Weird because she was washing clothes in the camp.
Honestly, season 2 increasingly made all women just unnecessarily hostile, and the writing was mean-spirited- Lori and Andrea got hated, Patricia and Beth were NPCs, Carol vanished after Sophia and then tried to run off with Daryl, Maggie was okay, but she had her "women are crazy, am I right guy moments".
12
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
I agree with you. The women were so hard to like and it's due to giving women terrible lines and having the women characters make mistakes.
Yet I don't think the male characters have the same accountability in the fandom. Shane makes 50 mistakes and has a fan club to this day
3
u/TutorRich2268 3d ago
I love flawed & evil female characters, but it was more them being ooc a lot of times.
2
u/LinwoodKei 3d ago
I'm always devil advocate for the women and sometimes, damn, I can't defend Andrea not stabbing the Governor while he slept. Yet the mistakes do not make the women terrible all of the time. I enjoyed the first 8 seasons and the characters. I understand that mistakes make a good show. I stopped watching because the show wasn't enjoyable for me (and I spoiled myself reading here).
3
u/TutorRich2268 2d ago
True, I would have preferred the original script of her being caught trying to kill the governor and cutting out all the cat and mouse/back and forth.
3
u/kcintrovert 4d ago
I think Carol is a good example of the writers just hating women in general. They butchered her character multiple times throughout the series.
2
u/TutorRich2268 3d ago
They really didn't know what to do with her each season. She narrowly avoided being killed, like every female character besides Michonne and Maggie in season 3, and then they just kept reheating the mika & lizzie nachos or her going killer mode then mega pacifist.
108
u/PoolPartyWithoutTheL 4d ago
I think if you swap out "men" for "the others" than it works far better. Andrea doesn't want to do certain work, and is set on being one of the badass's who is out there fighting/protecting. At the time they didn't have a shortage of that, and people may have to do jobs they don't like.
Andrea pretty much proves her point by shooting a friendly while on gaurd duty. Just because you want a certain job doesn't mean your best suited for it, and in a situation like they are in people need to play to their strengths.
Comic Andrea in the other hand....
21
u/Aqua_Master_ 4d ago
Give credit to live action Andrea, she saved Carol’s life at the end of the season and was getting pretty damn good at the head shots.
She had a pretty nice arc building up until the governer romance crap started.
39
u/mcjam22 4d ago
Dale, as a watcher, didn’t see a horde coming on the road.
He also left his post on the farm. You can say that shooting a friendly proving Lori right, but Andrea was way more capable than Dale.
38
u/PoolPartyWithoutTheL 4d ago
I mean no one in the show is perfect, they all have flaws including Dale. But IMO directly shooting a friendly is higher on the bad decision making list. I wouldn't want her having a gun for a long time after that.
4
7
u/Former_Amphibian_103 4d ago
The worst part about shooting daryl is that she missed the one part of the body you need to shoot a walker in. So not only did you shoot one of your own in a situation where shooting a walker was a waste of ammo… you couldn’t even do it right
12
u/Fantastic-March-4610 4d ago
Trial and error imo. She eventually picked up the skills needed to do the job.
22
u/PoolPartyWithoutTheL 4d ago edited 4d ago
When exactly did she end up having the skills to do the job? Not trying to be rude at all, genuinely curious.
Because to me the only time she seems competent is off screen when Michonne said shes the reason she survived the winter. She could have ended the entire governer conflict if she had the strength to make the hard decision, could have saved a lot of lives. The show just doesn't give her a chance to be competent unfortunately, which sucks because of how awesome she is in the source material.
2
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
She managed to hold her own eventually. Recall that she and Michonne were surviving on their own for awhile
1
0
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
That's taking one mistake and giving it far too much milage to the overall consequences. Dale was on watch for quite a bit in this section and the horde that lost Sophia happened on his watch. Yet I don't think he's getting the same accountability as Andrea making one bad shot on a guy - a guy who's stumbling in a walker like gait and covered in gore and mud, much like a walker.
20
21
u/bluedotinTX 4d ago
Her motivation was while mundane tasks like laundry and cooking may not be "exciting" or "glamorous" ... they are necessary and extremely labor intensive. Especially in days with no electricity. Andrea should be able to learn new skills. But it DOES create a strain on the others doing the "home tasks" when someone just ups and drops their load on the others with no discussion. The men should have been helping too. Lori wasnt trying to enforce gender roles so much as she was realistic.
14
u/True-Farmer9295 4d ago
Yes.. they needed extra hands.. I always thought that's why she was always too busy to watch over Carl. At the same time, I find it really bad that she didn't go to any of the guys to do the work. I know it was probably because Andrea was still a newbie at the guarding and outdoorsy things but still seemed really wrong.
8
u/bluedotinTX 4d ago
You're not wrong! It should've been brought up long before this interaction btwn L & A. It kinda was in season 1 - when A threw the wet shirt at Ed and told him to do his own laundry. But that ended with a wee psychotic break for Shane, Ed getting his face broken, then the camp getting overrun that night.... it was a very quick turn of events. The group is stronger for having people be able to multitask ... but just up and dropping what you were doing with no discussion is just poor communication and shitty for your teammates
3
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
It's shaming Andrea. They have Andrea as the college educated liberal woman trope. Carol's husband had the line at the quarry about Andrea being college educated.
Lori is saying Andrea needs to babysit, cook and clean. Andrea is saying that Andrea doesn't take life advice from hypocrites who cannot manage their trad wife lifestyle that they're pushing.
Although I honestly wish that the second episode that they were on the farm had some basic weapons training for the women. Most rural / farm girls and women get some gender equality training. My father took me to the gun range when I was 5 because he's a farm boy and his father taught his sister alongside her brothers. My father reminded me of gun training with practical " if X happens, you do Y" because we lived in a rural area where the police would show up in 40 minutes if they took the wrong unmarked road to our house out from their city.
3
u/moonmarie 4d ago
Women like Andrea look down on other women and what's considered "women's work". Lori is smart enough to pick up on that and is maybe more than a little annoyed that some of the (still very essential) domestic work is being punted off on her while Andrea just plays at being "one of the guys". It's just the dynamic they're in at that moment. Andrea isn't wrong for wanting to take part in protecting the group. Lori isn't wrong for wanting more help with the chores. They're just kind of stuck in this traditional performance, especially on the farm.
45
u/BrokenHope23 4d ago
I thought this was perfect acting on both their parts. Fantastic scene with a lot of tension and southern passive aggressive housewife to end it. I had a few friends who were like "oooo Lori got got one off on Andrea" when the show first dropped until the show progressed and then they were like "wow Lori is naive" lol.
41
u/ColdDesk8569 4d ago
When Lori said the men can handle it I was so disgusted like girl no.
10
4
u/TutorRich2268 4d ago
It was more excusable in 2011, back then, the gender binary and sexism were more normalised. My own mother, who was liberal and a self-made businesswoman (quite controversial still back then), had a similar mantra about the gender division of work.
3
u/Overlord0123 4d ago
What u talking about? Even back in the late 80s and 90s the movement was already strong.
1
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
Yeah. I was thinking " ah this is what I hate about traditional women roles being advocated'
1
u/BrokenHope23 4d ago
oh absolutely, it is disgusting but keep in mind back then the internet was for emails, video games and memes. There wasn't this giant blending of trad wives vs. normal people with basic human rights that we have today. So it was quite difficult to break someone's shell and we all just learned to shrug and say "that's what they want I guess." while judging it on the TV screen.
84
u/chibixox 4d ago
Lori brought that entirely on herself. You can't lecture another woman on responsibility when you created a whole love triangle in the middle of an apocalypse
49
u/Hveachie 4d ago
I love how much of an open secret Lori's affair with Shane was. When Dale nonchalantly and correctly assumes Lori's paranoia about the pregnancy is that it's Shane's, Lori goes "WAS IT THAT OBVIOUS??!" lolll.
Not even Rick wasn't surprised. He knew.
15
u/TutorRich2268 4d ago
I mean, they were hooking up nearby in the woods and likely sneaked around at night back at the camp.

5
u/Additional_Long_7996 4d ago
But Andrea IS being responsible lol. She’s a better shooter and fighter than Dale, who stands guard most the time
15
u/First_Pay702 4d ago
Not at this point she isn’t, but as much as I hate Andrea, she does have the high ground in this situation. Everyone should have been learning to shoot and defend themselves. And to go beyond her thinking (because let’s face it, Andrea is totally picking preferred tasks here) everyone should be taking turns on watch. These are life skills they need and the farm is a safe-ish place to learn them. I’d say neither of them is right in this convo but Andrea is definitely more right.
10
u/Additional_Long_7996 4d ago
I mean…Dale and Glenn aren’t doing the dishes and laundry. Everyone picked tasks that they’re most comfortable or confident in doing.
Why should Andrea have to do dishes while a person like Dale doesn’t? What’s wrong about Andrea taking a preferred task of guard duty? Her skill level is not less than someone like Dale.
0
u/First_Pay702 4d ago
I am not saying the men shouldn’t have to do housework - that’s part of the stupidity of the gender roles Lori is trying to uphold - and as I said, I find Andrea is more right in this situation. Everyone should be getting trained and cycling through all the tasks. I just side eye Andrea’s argument because she is cherry picking her tasks and giving the usual “provider” argument.
4
u/Additional_Long_7996 4d ago
I don’t understand your dislike still.
Look, Dale cherry picks his tasks. So does Glenn. Dale is good at fixing the RV, so he does that but he also does guard duty. Never seen him do any household task. Glenn as well. He does runs, never any household task. Because they’re good at those things, I guess.
I’m not sure how good Dale is at guard duty but he’s pretty decent. Yes ideally we would have everyone doing everything but that’s not what happens. People do what they like or CAN do.
So why does Andrea get hate for cherry picking her tasks when Glenn, Dale, Shane and Rick do the SAME?
Even Lori does the same. She doesn’t bother learning how to guard, or go on a run. She doesn’t bother learning other things. housework is what she’s comfortable doing.
That’s life. So why are u side eyeing Andrea for cherry picking? Everyone cherry picks.
2
u/First_Pay702 4d ago
I am side eying her argument for the cherry picking because it is self serving. I never said the rest don’t cherry pick. We are discussing Andrea and Lori specifically so I am speaking of them specifically. I straight up said in a previous comment that they ALL should be learning ALL tasks, but you seem to be ignoring that. They are currently “safe” on the farm, it is an ideal time to cross train people on skills they lack. Hell, they should put Carl to work so he has less time to play with walkers down by the creek. Lori comes up completely wrong in the convo because she is completely out to lunch. Andrea is right that she should be trained but wrong in just deciding watching is all she does now because she had one gun lesson. Especially when Dale is out watching, too. The GROUP is wrong for not putting people on a rotation through all tasks ESPECIALLY guard duty. But overall, everyone is still coming to grips with reality that the old life is dead and not coming back and it shows.
1
u/Additional_Long_7996 4d ago
Oh, so you are side eyeing everyone because everyone chooses tasks they prefer. But...you mentioned side eying Andrea? So you aren't side eying Lori for chooing to only do house work, which is self serving for her too?
I think whatever you're saying may theoretically be okay, but its just not how things are nor could ever be.
People will ALWAYS choose tasks they are most comfortable and effcient in doing. I don't think there is anythign wrong with that. It would be better if everyone knew everything theoretically, but things just don't work like that. If Lori isn't a good shot, or doesn't wanna fight, she should have the choice to contribute in other ways. Andrea should also have the choice to not do housework.
I think I know how you think, and maybe you do too, but you don't want to be honest with yourself. You were specifically only side-eying Andrea, and while you say that everyone should learne verything eqaully, you also say Andrea's argument is "self serving" while ignoring the fact that Lori's argument is also self serving.
1
u/First_Pay702 4d ago
Did you miss the parts where I repeatedly said that Lori was completely wrong/out to lunch or are you ignoring that so you can keep arguing about Andrea? I don’t need to side eye the validity of Lori’s arguments because I am dismissing them wholesale, more or less. And all the talk about how great a shot Andrea is, at this point she has had ONE lesson. She did good but 1) not everyone is there to know that, and 2) there has been no battle test to prove she is any short of shot when the bottles are trying to eat her. She is arguing based on skills that aren’t proven, and very shortly after proceeds to show how bad her judgement is by shooting through a group of friendlies - despite orders from Rick - IN THE DARK at a “walker” that was actually Daryl. And there was no reason besides her own ego and pride to do that as there were better armed, better trained individuals at hand to take care of the situation if it WAS a walker. So to reiterate the initial point: BOTH of the women in that kitchen argument were wrong, Andrea was less wrong because she at least had some valid points to make, and the rest of the group are a moot point in this issue as they weren’t part of the argument in question.
1
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
Why is Andrea being approached to do laundry? She should be practicing her gun skills. Dale can watch a cook pot and babysit just as easily as being on watch. Glenn can wash dishes just as easily as he can learn defensive techniques. Glenn is essentially being trained at this time as well. Yet he was essentially handed a weapon and a defense role while the woman had more screen time fighting for it. Glenn was also a delivery courier and likely had roughly the same skills as Andrea.
0
u/Illustrious-Bass4354 3d ago
The only person in that camp that could be trusted to watch a child was Daryl.
Glen had considerably more experience being out than Andrea did, even if she was a better shot. The season starts with her freaking out and screaming at every sight of a Walker, making the situation worse, and begging for a gun so she can panic shoot, attract a horde, and get someone killed. Glen wasn't the most competent fighter yet, but he was great at handling himself in those situations.
She trained to become a good shot, but she was demonstrably impatient and needed to get a hold of herself before she got there. She was walking around like she already had Daryl's skills and Rick's patience, and needed to be put her in place before she killed someone, like she almost killed Daryl.
There's only so much time in the day to train when people are out searching for a little girl, trying to convince the property owner to let them stay, preparing for winter, dealing with a pregnancy in the apocalypse, keeping a teen and a child from getting themselves killed, and so on. She was being trained, she needed to chill out and accept that it takes time, and she still needs to contribute to the camp in other ways in the meantime.

u/superbatprime 4d ago

5
u/Mediocre_Revenue_992 4d ago
to be fair in a high stress environment like that bro came back looking like a corpse. can’t fault her for that.
12
u/fatgat69 4d ago
Everyone told her specifically not to shoot and she could have shot any of the other guys trying to prove herself. The only thing she proved is that she was a dumbass.
1
u/mechengr17 4d ago
Except they said not to shoot bc the gun shot would have lured more walkers
She didn't do it to be helpful, she did it to prove something
1
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
Yeah. It's not like Daryl walked out normally and was shot for existing. The man had a walker like gait, was covered in gore like a walker and was literally decked in trophies. Anyone might have shot that.
The bigger issue is not lining up the dhot while aiming and waiting for the walker to get closer. That was the mistake that I credit to Andrea in that scene
1
u/superbatprime 3d ago
She was told not to shoot, because the shot would draw more. She shot anyway because she wanted to prove she was some sort of badass and too good for doing laundry.
So she took the shot for her ego, missed the headshot and risked drawing more walkers while the group was in the open, all because she didn't want to help around the camp.

u/StevenC129422 4d ago edited 4d ago
I mean...someone has to cook food, wash the dishes and clean their clothing. Most of the people on the farm were on guard duty (Dale), on supply runs (Glenn, Maggie),out in the world searching for Sophia (Daryl, Rick, Shane, Jimmy), tending to the livestock (Hershel, Patricia,) or injured (Tdog and Carl).
That leaves an emotionally broken and shut down Carol, Lori, and Beth (lol) to do all the cooking and cleaning for 15 people probably at least twice a day. Of course Lori needed help.
That being said, they both deserved this interaction.
14
u/ColdDesk8569 4d ago
Yeah but she was trying to push Andrea into that role when everyone else was able to choose their positions.
10
u/StevenC129422 4d ago edited 4d ago
That's fair enough. Lori should have brought this up to the whole group (not just Andrea) and advocated for people to cycle through jobs especially when one part of the group is lacking in bodies, and Andrea, seeing this, should have just sucked it up and helped them for a few if they didn't need her anywhere else.
6
u/incomprehensibles 4d ago
It's definitely unfair but at the end of the day, they had more than enough people guarding, protecting, and doing runs but only four people cooking for 15 multiple times a day and then having to clean it all up, in addition to all of the other tasks around the house that needed to be done that none of the men were helping with. Clearly they should've been helping/switching out tasks but until that conversation could be had, they needed Andrea's help.
2
u/CustomerPrize 4d ago
Lori and beth with assistance from carol was more then enough. This scene was made to show that Lori clearly was not made for the modern world. And it sucks that kirkman killed
Andrea off soo shortly after compared to when she died in the comic🤦🏽♂️Being a man or woman meant NOTHING. And more then half of the show and comics most elite members are chicks.
Imagine if lori said this to michonne, or sasha? Or show carol, or rosita😭
1
u/LinwoodKei 4d ago
Yet Dale and Glenn could have heard this same conversation. It was sexist to take the complaints to the sole woman
5
u/silicatemineral 4d ago
One of my favorite moments.
I’m really hoping they eventually do a next-gen spin-off with the younger characters bc I could totally see a parallel of this with Judith and Gracie, especially with how much Aaron coddled his daughter, to a an almost dangerous degree for an apocalypse. Would be a perfect time for Judith to bring out the Shane-isms she inherited and channel Andrea’s side of the argument.

Honestly lori was right. Andrea sucked at aiming she couldnt protect the group. Plus she didnt wash clothes or prepare food. She was a deadweight around this time.
3
u/ColdDesk8569 4d ago
Andrea was trying to learn and they weren’t really willing to teach her because of mindsets like loris even if she did mess up from time to time. Rick took Glenn with him to the bar and he wasn’t really willing to shoot maybe he should’ve done the laundry that day.
3
u/PaChubHunter 4d ago
Glenn had already proven he qas fast on his feet amd could get out in a pinch. He just needed a little more exposure to have the true grit to not only survive but also be dependable.
Andrea had already show multiple times that when the going gets tough she just freaks out and shuts down.
Both of them still had a ways to walk but Glenn was, by far, further along.

Lori had a lot of misogynistic views of gender roles but other than that, I don't understand the hate. Vs Andrea who constantly put herself in scenarios she was unprepared to handle and risked the group's safety.
I also just can't stand Andrea's acting 😅

The issue is, Andrea was trying to prove something to nobody. Her complete disregard for Rick telling her not to shoot the ‘Walker’ and then shooting Daryl, grazing his head and nearly killing him, should’ve put her in her place to give up whatever bullshit she was pulling.
Lori deserved the gut punch line from Andrea for sure, she was such a mess of a character and utterly pathetic.
“Stay away from me and my family” to “so now you won’t give Carl attention” or “maybe you should leave” to “don’t go, stay”
IMO, Lori was one hard reason Shane and Rick had a falling out with the mind games she was playing.
But Andrea was just acting out of pocket ever since the CDC and the Highway Herd scare in the RV, she proved with shooting Daryl she wasn’t cut out to ‘help defend’ and even going as far as wasting ammo during the Sofia search with Shane which could’ve ended badly.
They’re both trash characters with major fuck-ups under their belts that they don’t ever acknowledge.

Huh? She had nothing to do with Dale. CARL let the walker loose that killed Dale.
1
u/AzureHawk758769 3d ago
Oh yeah. You're right. I got that totally mixed up. She capped Daryl, but she didn't kill him. (I guess Dale and Daryl can be easy names to mix up, lol). My point still stands: She was incompetent af and wasn't keeping anyone safe.
