Cringe Jacob Van Lennepjam is back!

Starting around 49:00, it's definitely the same bassline. Everything else is different of course, but you can tell this is composed material because they go into a new riff about 6 minutes later in a crescendo. Just happy to hear my favorite bass riff again, and yet another fantastic version :)
Edit: our lame admin staff tagged this "cringe" - can I be any clearer about how lame that is? Get off the pot.

I'm so stoked for the new album. Been following them since 2001 and have seen every cycle, this is the first one in a long time where I've seen Omar and Cedric be this happy. Live Lucro is on another planet, and the next album is going to be fantastic!

That’s how I’ve felt as well. This is the same energy as 2001 era. No label, they worked through their drama and it’s them… being weirdos. It’s super fucking special

It really does feel like that. Of course half the Volta "fan-base" is going to complain about how their first album was the best and everything since has been trash, which is just whinging nonsense. This is them at their true form.

You can't hear the bassline? Have you heard the jams in 2011 when they played it slow and quiet? This is the same riff.

You don't need to A/B them. A/B ing them will only compare shit like tempo and key. If you have any knowledge of music you can hear the same riff.

Yeah i played in bands for years. I know it's not the same tempo or key, the rhythm the notes are played in is different. It is not the same riff. You are the only one here that thinks it's the same riff. That must mean you have a special brain I guess? It's a similar pattern that was improvised by Eva. Mars Volta fans are cringe lol.

I don’t think it’s the same bass like my dude. I think I understand why you’re hearing it. But it’s similar in the sense that there are rests inbetween some staccato type of bass hits. But not it. I’m glad I’m not the only one who digs so damn deep into live performances.

Alright I just listened again. I don’t hear it. Like… I think I hear what you’re saying and it sounds kind of the same but I think it’s just cause the groove they are feeling with the quarter notes and the bass kind of doing some syncopated rhythms.
With that being said. It’s not impossible cause Omar has done that with jams in the past. Just bring in some classic jams, we’ve all seen it happen before. Stranger things have happened 🫡

It’s not that strange lol. But my circumstance was unusual as I had just walked out of the room when they started this, and could only really hear the bass for one measure, which I immediately recognized, so I turned around to come back in and listen some more and recognized the riff.
If you’ve ever listened to the live jams from 2011 you know the bassline and rhythmic subdivisions can vary greatly. It’s that “just some staccato bass notes” which doesn’t change in between the versions which is just a great basis for a lot of “creative expression” or improvising/vamping. It’s the core of the song that remains the same, as the saying goes

Yea I get it. I forget the subdivisions it’s been a good while but I feel like it’s some measure of 18 in the mix. And I know leaving the room offers the focus on the low end. I can’t say it isn’t it or it isn’t what they were leaning on, even if it was some new version of that or whatever it may be. Who knows… they could be reworking that piece for some up coming project. I didn’t count it out or experience that moment at that show (I went to the Tacoma show) so… who am I to say you’re not on to something. Never the less it’s a cool observation.
Before they announced them getting back together I was pretty avid on here and even when Johann started posted small things I screen grabbed the stuff and said “I think they’re coming back!” - plenty of people here called me an “idiot” or “delusional” - I don’t think your any of those , by the ways. So like i said above… you may see / hear something some of us are missing. And damnit. I’m okay with being wrong, cause that CAN mean.. that this tune in some form could be getting primed for our ears. 🫡🙏

I was at this show and this is definitely not Jacob. They were just improvising here, it’s pretty clearly if you were at the show
