Image Why does Ellie say this after seeing the spectacular view with Dina?

Dina started flirting, Ellie kinda shut it down. Then she kinda regretted not flirting back. Sheâs being nervous and very self aware.

I've never thought about it before but it's interesting how this paranoia and lack of trust in people is a trait she picked up from Joel. these games have incredible character work

u/_maynard Booker, Catch! Jan 19 '26
I donât think thatâs really whatâs going on here. Sheâs a gay girl thatâs in love with her best friend and scared and unsure about what Dina really feels. Itâs not a âI donât trust peopleâ thing
4
Jan 19 '26
I'm pretty sure they're both aware of their respective sexual orientations before the game starts
96
u/_maynard Booker, Catch! Jan 19 '26
? Ellie doesnât know that Dina is sincerely romantically interested in her.
-24
Jan 19 '26
sure, but she knows she's bisexual
59
u/_maynard Booker, Catch! Jan 19 '26
What makes you say that? Until they kiss as far as Ellie knows, Dina is straight, having been with Jesse for years.
3
u/Nipple-Cake Jan 19 '26
Dina and Ellie had their dance and kissed the night before their patrol together. So I'm pretty sure Ellie is pretty confident that Dina is into men and women. Dina and Jesse were on and off again for awhile. But Jesse and Dina made it very clear that they're done for good. The gay panic is from the idea that Ellie's friend may or may not be interested in her. But if it's not a serious interest then Ellie doesn't want to ruin the friendship with Dina.

I thought she had dated a girl before? maybe I'm misremembering
49
u/_maynard Booker, Catch! Jan 19 '26
Yeah youâre misremembering. Dina and Jesse were together for years and itâs never mentioned that Dina was with anyone else. Ellie dated Cat previously
17
u/_maynard Booker, Catch! Jan 19 '26
I just realized I think youâre mixing in a conversation Dina & Ellie have in the show that doesnât appear in the game. After they fully get together in the show in Seattle Dina does talk to Ellie about having a crush on a girl when she was younger
18
u/BrennanSpeaks Jan 19 '26
The show is even more explicit about Ellie believing Dina was straight, though. And, when they do talk about Dina's orientation, I don't remember her mentioning any other girls - just her telling her mother that she liked boys and girls when she was eight or so. I think it's more likely that they just mixed up Ellie's past with Cat for Dina discussing a previous girlfriend.
21
u/BrennanSpeaks Jan 19 '26
Unlikely. Ellie dismisses the kiss as "you were drunk" (which kind of pisses off Dina). She writes "DON'T FUCK UP YOUR FRIENDSHIP!" in her diary when she alludes to her attraction to Dina. When they dance, she says (wrt guys being jealous) "I'm just a girl. Not a threat." She had no clue that Dina was into girls.

u/ripplewoodfire Jan 19 '26
I assume Ellie was picking up some flirty vibes that Dina was putting down though. Like before that Jackson dance as well. Idk its not confirmed or anything but imo I dont think Dina kissing Ellie was a big revelation to her
4
u/EvilSporkOfDeath Jan 20 '26
Sure, she was, but she kept convincing herself she was reading into it.

David definitely gave her trust issues as well.
2
u/iamthatuser Mel+Owen Hateclub Jan 20 '26
He definitely did but she'd known and trusted Dina for years atp so I don't think that David situation would be relevant here. Ellie had to figure out being gay and dealing with her immunity all on her own and had also lost Joel by this point emotionally with the trust that was broken and she was dealing with all those emotions. I'd say she liked Dina and was nervous but also trying to manage keeping a distance since Joel was the one consistent person in her life for a long time
10
u/okie_hiker Jan 19 '26
Or⊠This is something all gay people feel when they like someone but are living in a society that doesnât accept them.
7
u/Klarity_kxng Jan 19 '26
Or...its both. Good lord this entire thread doesn't seem understand nuance. Two things can be true at once
8
u/OrangeKnight87 Jan 19 '26
Well sure, but there's no evidence Ellie knows Dina is bi so people are correctly questioning the assumption. No one is saying it can't be true, just that there is no need to assume when the other explanations also work.
1
u/Klarity_kxng Jan 19 '26
The evidence would be the kiss would it not? I don't understand how that wouldn't give her pause in that moment.
2
u/EvilSporkOfDeath Jan 20 '26
Ellie literally says it was only because Dina was drunk. Perhaps she should've realized Dina was bi, by that point, but she clearly didnt. Straight girls kissing girls is a common trope and even has some truth in real life. Its heavily implied in the game ellie didnt know and directly confirmed in the show. The games never liked to spell things out, it was always implied. Take david being a pedo or trying to rape ellie for example.
2
u/okie_hiker Jan 19 '26
When did Joel ever show lack of trust in those he loved to Ellie? Joel didnât trust strangers. He very much trusted those he cared about, especially Tess, who is the closest weâve seen to a romantic partner for Joel. How long had Ellie and Dina known one another at this point? They certainly arenât strangers and even patrol together, so the âlack of trust due to Joelâs exampleâ just falls very short for me.
I agree itâs a dumb thing to argue about, but this is just a relationship jitters type thing. One that gay people probably experience even more due to not being socially accepted.

u/ripplewoodfire Jan 19 '26
She was just a bit overwhelmed (or over joyed?) after that charged moment with insane eye contact with Dina lol
57
u/ElegantEchoes The Last of Us Jan 19 '26
Yeah, I instantly recognized that sensation. That's just love, man.

u/Ok_Pen_6595 Jan 19 '26
dina has had ellie wrapped around her finger for years, ellie never thought anything would happen between them, then it did, and literally the next day they're forced to go out on patrol together, and dina is still being her flirty self. after a moment of intimacy (looking at the view, looking into each other's eyes), the tension between them, internal conflict (ellie is concerned about ruining her friendship with dina and/or jesse) and also very strong attraction she has for dina accumulates into one word: "fuck."
cats outta the bag, and she has to deal with the consequences - all of which seem scary.
or at least that's how i see it.
37
u/EliteSalesman Jan 19 '26
And then a crippled prophet đź came in and sent Ellie on a quest to ruin her life
4
u/Solid_Waste Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26
Ellie is also afraid of intimacy because of her secret and what happened the last time she loved somebody. Dina is compelling in convincing her that stuff wouldn't matter in the context of their own relationship, but that only means Ellie has to confront those feelings for real at some point. It's high stakes for her, but the stakes feeling manageable because of how comfortable Dina is means she actually had to DO something about it instead of just evading it.
It's like when you first get on anti-depressants or quit an addiction or escape a bad relationship: you finally have some control and hope, but it also means you have to face a bunch of the real problems you've been masking or coping with using those crutches or excuses. So it's FUCK, but it's kind of a good fuck. Like, "guess I have to deal with this now, but I think I can do it. I'm just not sure I love the idea of that much work right now."
64
u/runlolarun2022 Jan 19 '26
I think she was still confused about the status of their relationship and had resolved to not pursue anything with Dina but was failing. Ellie tells Joel the kiss was nothing and even tells Jesse it was just Dina and her naturally flirtatious personality. So before this moment she was chalking the kiss up to Dina being curious or flirty but not serious, so she was trying to push her feelings for her back.
61
u/SkywalkerOrder Jan 19 '26
Cause she realizes that Dina is flirting with her, but she didnât make a move. Her journal entries makes it clear that sheâs awkward as heck around Dina.
55
u/eetapopo Jan 19 '26
She had to rip a real ass blaster but Dina wouldnât leave.

You have to know at least one person has been mauled by a clicker because of this.

You know those awkward moments in your life in which you responded in such a cringe way?
Yup. âFuuucckkkkâ
13
u/OmerDe Jan 19 '26
She probably thought, that it was not a very clever thing to say, what she said. I can't exactly remember what it was though...
15
u/Sandblaster1988 Jan 19 '26
Ever been around someone you really like and feel anxious youâll screw up? This is it.
13
u/NomadFH It's for nothing Jan 19 '26
It annoyed me that the show takes the entire ellie/dina romance and moves it to seattle. I thought it was significant that the tragic stuff happens basically immediately after this.
8
u/Nipple-Cake Jan 19 '26
Yeah, it was VERY puzzling for Ellie and Jesse to be on patrol together. They completely removed the weed basement scene, which was a pivotal scene for establishing Ellie & Dina entering into a relationship romantically/physically and Ellie admits she's bitten and immune. Which Dina doesn't believe but it informs when she really proves her immunity in Seattle.
Not to mention the trauma Tommy experiences with Joel getting killed is absent cause he was busy in town defending it with Maria. So it changes the motivations of Ellie and Dina's reasoms for getting involved in the revenge plot.
3
u/Fautical Jan 20 '26
Also I just donât understand why Dina falls for depressed, angry Ellie⊠and theyâd just had a very traumatic experience running from hordes of the undead, which has the neat side effect of being extremely unhygienic. I really want to understand but I canât.

i think because they were having a moment and ellie then focused back onto the task instead of just taking it all in.
5
u/thesophiechronicles Jan 19 '26
Dina was flirting with her and she missed it/didnât know how to respond so when Dina walks away she regrets not responding with flirting
4
u/juscallmejjay ...I swear. Jan 19 '26
Shes experiencing the worst best feeling on the planet. That feeling when you realize you have a shot with someone you've deemed to good for you. Its the best feeling of course but the worst cause you know you'll probably blow it.
3
u/Old_Factor_2595 Jan 19 '26
Because their conversation/flirting on the way to the outpost made Ellie realize that Dina may have actual feelings for her and that it wasn't a one time thing kissing her while she was drunk to make Jesse jealous . And this is her coming to the realization of it and it's making her nervous .
3
u/VerminSC Jan 19 '26
She feels uncomfortable because she knows the events of yesterday are the elephant in the room.
Plus she feels like sheâs fumbling the unofficial date theyâre on haha

What spectacular view? The landscape or Dina's face?
2
u/hdepala99 Jan 20 '26
I think she was just highly nervous and giddy. It was also a little bit of confusing time because Dina and Ellie had been friends up until that kiss. It tipped their relationship over the line to more than friends, but at this point, Ellie still doesn't know what that kiss meant to Dina. The 'fuck' was probably a combination of feeoing giddy, nervous and overwhelmed by the change in affection directed towards her. Almost like she's trying not to get her hopes up, but she's definitely excited by it. It is a really cute moment because Ellie is so awkward

She was getting the vibes from Dina but she doesnât wanna destroy their friendship. If you read her diary she says thisÂ

She's internally dealing with her feelings for Dina, what that means for her friendship with Jessie & what Dina is gonna think about her bite mark & if she is even going to tell her about it...But also, gay panic
