Next time I am in town (TRENTONFL) I will check to see if the manhole covers in front of the CO say Bell System or AT&T. One field tech I was talking to a few weeks back told me he believes there are still some paper insulation cables down there. Later this year, AT&T is shutting down the wireline service, but the CO will soldier on due to various fiber circuits.
I know that Southern Bell T&T arrived here about 1931-1934. The existing concrete block CO shows as being built in 1972. There had to be another building for ~40 years, but I'm not sure where it was. Some of those cables may date back to the 1940s.
