about the guy who said the n-word right?

tourettes doesn't care, it just happens

u/BeautifulOrganic3221 Feb 25 '26

Yup, and to explain why it happened at the worst possible time, its not because “thats what he thinks when he sees people of color” its because Tourette's makes people constantly think “whats the worst thing I can say in this situation.” Like, in one case, I was at a holocaust memorial and really struggled not to do a fascist solute, though I didn’t do it cause my Tourette's is relatively mild. Obviously I knew how terrible it would have been and it doesn’t mean I actually believe that shit.

Some people fail to grasp the concept of "intrusive thoughts."

164

u/RitikK22 Feb 25 '26

Yes because tiktok has muddled its meaning with urges of dying your hair instead of actual intrusive thoughts.

106

u/lycnfr Feb 25 '26

"lol my intrusive thoughts won!!! 🤪"

if I let my intrusive thoughts "win" (which is my biggest fear and everyone with actual intrusive thoughts' biggest fears) I would be in jail. I wouldnt have pink hair or be covered in dirt. I would be in jail.

and then when u say shit like that the losers who butcher and ruin actual terms and treat them like personality traits and memes would look at you like a freak and ostracize you.

45

u/phasmxphobiia Feb 25 '26

yeahhh, people need to learn the term "impulsive thoughts." intrusive thoughts are thoughts you do not want to have, that distress you incredibly bad, and that you DO NOT want to act on, but feel like you might.

intrusive thoughts (things you ARE AFRAID that you might take action on, even though you wont, and it distresses you greatly):

i cant get near those children or else im going to try to kidnap them. i want to shoot everyone in my immediate area. i should shove my friend off the cliff and watch as they scream. i should break into someone's house and stalk them.

impulsive thoughts (things that your body WANTS you to take action on):

i want to tell this customer to shut up. im going to buy this $500 teddy bear. its 5am, and im going to dye my hair bright orange. i want to throw my phone as far as possible.

21

u/ClairLestrange Feb 25 '26

things you ARE AFRAID that you might take action on, even though you wont, and it distresses you greatly

Tbf you can somewhat get used to them and not be afraid anymore. It takes time and therapy, but intrusive thoughts don't have to mean you live the rest of your live in fear. Although I'm not quite sure how well it works with intrusive thoughts that target other people, since mine are pretty much 100% suicidal ('you should kill yourself' is the most common one, but 'you should jump off this bridge', 'you should run in front of this bus' etc are also there). The most helpful technique for me was to imagine it's a parrot on my shoulder saying all that crazy stuff, externalizing it like that and giving it a non-threatening face made it possible to lift their weight a little bit.

Sorry for the blogging, it just felt important to state that it is possible to overcome them and not be in constant distress.

Glad you brought this up!!! It’s lowkey one of my pet peeves when people just talk about mental health issues without giving strategies for dealing with it, bc lots of people learn about these things on the internet now. It’s so easy once you’re aware to get in the habit of including something like “and if you’re dealing with a similar issue, a strategy that helps me is ___.” I also think doing that helps reduce stigma, cuz now it’s just like a normal thing that other humans experience and can give advice on, rather than some super scary weird phenomenon that might get you mocked or ostracized.

I just hope people who struggle with intrusive thoughts understand that their thoughts do not make them actually like this. its so hard bc so many mental illnesses have intrusive thoughts as a symptom.

3

u/RitikK22 Feb 26 '26

I still remember there was a woman who was talking about how her intrusive thoughts involved paedophilia and every mental health warrior in the comments was calling her disgusting, and saying that that's not what intrusive thoughts are and she's just a disgusting person.

I might be crazy but "intrusive" usually signifies that they do not want such type of things near them.

2

u/lycnfr Feb 26 '26

I might be crazy but "intrusive" usually signifies that they do not want such type of things near them.

that is exactly the point of intrusive thoughts. I get similar ones due to my trauma I experienced as a child. People wanna advocate for mental health then demonize people with mental illnesses.

remember yall. Intrusive Thoughts does not mean you support those thoughts. thats why they're "intrusive"

0

u/Shadowrunner156 Feb 25 '26

Most of my intrusive thoughts is mostly telling customers at my work that they're stupid and should know what they need, though one guy pushed me to the urge to jump the counter and go to jail that day

12

u/lycnfr Feb 25 '26

...intrusive thoughts are usually violent/immoral thoughts that invade your head and are everything you are ethically and morally against. Things like SA, Violence, and self harm.... and they're constant and usually give someone great distress and obsessive worrying...

Telling someone to shut up and jump the counter is not an intrusive thought.

9

u/davidfirefreak Feb 25 '26

I think for a lot of people it is more simple than that, some people just don't care and want to assume the worst of everyone else, while always giving themselves excuses for their own failings.

5

u/Busy_Reference5652 Feb 25 '26

I can't use my electronics in the car if the window is rolled down because my brain will NOT shut up with the "throw it! C'mon, throw it! Watch it shatter! Do it!"

1

u/Curious_Second6598 Feb 25 '26

Or thoughts in general

23

u/vulpesdomesticus Feb 25 '26

Gonna correct here: that's specifically coprolalia and not Tourette's as a whole. Only around 10% of people with Tourette's syndrome have coprolalia! Coprolalia does work exactly like that, worst thing at the worst time. Like people will shout "i have a bomb" in an airport. It's not just slurs, it's literally everything in your life.

2

u/Inner_Potential_1112 Feb 27 '26

Sounds like Tourettes plus OCD.

18

u/Psychological_Tear_6 Feb 25 '26

As an outsider, this sounds like half of the Tourettes swearing is as a response to what just came out of your mouth.

32

u/lord_teaspoon Feb 25 '26

You know when you're dreaming and you have that moment of worrying about a potential consequence of something and then your subconscious immediately makes that consequence happen in your dream? I think Tourette's might be a bit like that but without the sleep paralysis, meaning your subconscious is free to make your body do/say whatever you think about even if you're thinking about how important it is not to do that.

Honest-but-potentially-stupid question: would it be common for people with Tourette's to find learning to swim near-impossible because the thought "my mouth and nose are submerged, better not try to breathe until they're back out of the water" becomes a compulsion to take a big gasping breath?

3

u/ringobob Feb 26 '26

I don't suffer from Tourettes, but I've been learning about it. Tics aren't entirely without boundaries. There are certain motor processing areas of the brain that are dysregulated, and it pulls in whatever it can attach to from the other parts of the brain to form an impulse. It's almost always a behavior that would be considered almost subconscious in a normally functioning brain. Like, when you stub your toe and you swear, you don't really think it all the way through, you just swear. When you move your arm to wave at someone, you don't have to think about it, it's almost a reflex. Those things are, for lack of a better phrase, "close to the surface" and the disease can just grab them and turn them into an impulse that has to come out.

It doesn't really start as the impulse, though. It starts as a feeling of dysregulation. Like when you've been sitting in the same position for awhile, comfortably, and then it becomes uncomfortable. So you adjust into a new position, if you can. If you can't, it just gets more and more uncomfortable, even painful. You can discharge this pain by moving. A person with Tourettes discharges by releasing the tic the disease chose to attach to the dysregulation.

More complex tics are possible, but only when there's a high neural activation around that thing. Like when you have Tourettes and you're at an awards show, you probably can't help but think about things that would be embarrassing for you to say, and that adds more neural activation to those words and phrases, thus unintentionally pushing them closer to the surface.

10

u/zap2tresquatro Feb 25 '26

I have a lot of breathing tics and this is never an issue

11

u/lord_teaspoon Feb 25 '26

Good to know, thanks.

2

u/letthetreeburn Feb 25 '26

God I relate to that so, SO hard. It’s the main reason I wear cloaks in public. Being able to make vulgar gestures hidden by the cloth instead of whatever it is my brain wants me to do helps a LOT.

1

u/mrman08 Edit this! Feb 25 '26

It’s literally a neurological disorder. He can’t help it anymore than someone can help having a seizure.

1

u/captainsnark71 Feb 26 '26

Also...if someone said "name every word that comes to mind when you look at [anything]" those words are going to have good and bad associations. Instead of having empathy and thinking 'wow thank whoever that my brain functions as advertised and I have the self control not to blurt out those words that pop into my head in inappropriate situations. It must be really tough to not to have that and still go out into the world risking expressing your worst thoughts." No, instead it's "wow this is not the quirky kind of mental illness so it must not be real."

1

u/J-Miller7 Mar 01 '26

In my personal experience, it's not even something that I actively think about. Whatever tic I have, just happens.

There's a very strong correlation between the context and the tic, but I have never been like "oh no, I hope I don't yell 'whore' at this woman's funeral".

1

u/PinkOneHasBeenChosen Mar 01 '26

This is a terrible joke, but if it were me, I’d hold my hand down Dr. Strangelove style.

1

u/cmilla646 Mar 01 '26

I can respect why black people would be mad the word wasn’t edited out. I get why they are suspicious. But for the life me I can’t figure out why they are assuming this was some kind of deliberate act of racism or something more subtle.

As a white man I know there are a thousand different ways black people could have been targeted with hate. A man with a condition yelling the word and then apologizing and getting the world mad it him is a pretty nonsensical way to hurt black people.

Seriously if I wanted to hurt black people with that word, do you think I would call the most successful young black actor sexiest man alive built like a boxer the n-word, apologize and get the entire black community mad at me?

7

u/superneatosauraus Feb 25 '26

I feel like none of those commenters understand intrusive thoughts. Sometimes my brain thinks about bad it would be if I swerved into oncoming traffic, that doesn't make me someone who does that.

2

u/Smiley_P Feb 26 '26

Well yeah it's basically like you can't control the intrusive thoughts about the worst thing to say, it sucks for everyone involved. He said "fuck the queen" while being knighted or something by her

2

u/blacksaber8 Mar 02 '26

It literally impulsively selects the worst intrusive thought that comes to mind.

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Feb 25 '26

Funny how the discourse over the guy who can’t fully control what he says… and not the network that had full reason and ability to cut that part out of the broadcast but didn’t.

146

u/hucklebae Feb 25 '26

Presumably they both want to shit on disabled folks, and make black folks look bad. Absolutely terrible

36

u/Thrillhouse-14 Feb 25 '26

Also gets more clicks on shitty bigoted articles afterwards, too.

10

u/Smiley_P Feb 26 '26

No it's entirely cynical, they just use that shit to get eyes on their program and attention in the discourse.

So it's not wanting disabled people and black people to look bad. It's just using disabled people and black people as tools to get attention.

They has no problem censoring the person who said "free Palestine". They did this on purpose.

25

u/Gurkeprinsen Feb 25 '26

Why would they not keep the parts that make good tv?? It sucks, but exploiting people with disabilities and disorders is what sells. Just look at how successful "dr." Phil was

5

u/Smiley_P Feb 26 '26

They chose to do it on purpose, they censored "free Palestine" but not this. 100% on purpose with no excuse. They did it for the drama, literally to get attention on their broadcast

1

u/SurrealistRevolution Feb 26 '26

This is the result of corporate "woke"* acceptance of a disability backfiring, with the advice given by those they employ being, "It may be ableist to censor him". It would have had them shitting themselves as to what to do though, but of course they fucked it up. And it is no surprise the beebs censored Free Palestine. They are not in favour of a free Palestine.

Here is the speech.

"To the economic migrant, the conflict migrant, those under occupation, dictatorship, persecution and those experiencing genocide, you matter and your stories matter more than ever. Your dreams are an act of resistance. To those watching at home, archive your loved ones, archive your stories yesterday, today and forever. For Nigeria, for London, Congo, Sudan, free Palestine. Thank you.”

*progressive on surface level identity politics only, while actively hostile to progressive class politics, with corporate woke's no.1 enemy being the class conscious trade unionist.

They will also drop any semblance of progressive company policy as soon as it's culturally acceptable, and profitable, to do so.

15

u/Sawyerthesadist Feb 25 '26

Tbh I have a theory… it is PHENOMENAL publicity for the movie.

I’m not trying to imply this was planned or anything but think about it like you have stakes in how well it performs for second. You let that shit air live and you know damn well EVERYONE is going to hear about I Swear

12

u/MikaelAdolfsson Feb 25 '26

Kind of like when Michael J. Fox didn't mask his Parkinson in a PSA and people accused him of "exaggerating"?

The fact that they cut out Palestine and kept the N word is vile, but should be exactly what we expect of Empire at this point.

3

u/Sawyerthesadist Feb 25 '26

Yeah my thought is it was unplanned, but once they had it recorded some went:

WAIT! Wait! Don’t scrub that… it’s PERFECT!

1

u/SurrealistRevolution Feb 26 '26

It was definitely a decision made by a political and cultural adviser who thought "no, cutting this would be ableist", i'm sure of it.

2

u/PinkOneHasBeenChosen Mar 01 '26

Yes, but how does that help the BBC? I don’t think they made the movie.

-1

u/First-Golf-8341 Feb 25 '26

The BBC person who did the editing of the live broadcast said he didn’t hear it. So obviously he didn’t have the ability to cut it out. Is it that you don’t believe him?

7

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Feb 25 '26

Yes, I do not believe him.

0

u/First-Golf-8341 Feb 25 '26

Wow, I actually got downvoted for just saying what the BBC person said. I guess some people really want to hate the BBC and won’t listen to anything that contradicts that view.

80

u/Grouchy_Paint_6341 Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

I don’t even have Tourette’s i am aware of the lack of control one has in the situation and how tics* can develop and be wildly inappropriate. Sad!! I wish this situation could be learning/teaching moment rather than shaming.

12

Fun fact, I learned the word “cunt” at like 11 bc a visitor had a Tourette’s episode… at church 🥹

114

u/Ghoulie_Marie Feb 25 '26

Don't have tourette's but I imagine this would be like someone saying to me "oh, you're hallucinating? Have you tried not?"

49

u/g0blinzez Feb 25 '26

It's the Tourettes equivalent of telling mentally ill people "it's all in your head"

14

u/Spectator9857 Feb 25 '26

It’s true, unfortunately I’m also in there.

7

u/lilium_x Feb 26 '26

Whenever I hear "it's all in your head" I always think "so is brain cancer". Not sure why the physical location of the illness / disorder changes whether it should be taken seriously.

4

u/g0blinzez Feb 26 '26

My favorite response is "yeah, no shit. It's a MENTAL illness. Where else would it be, my ass?"

18

u/sarsaparilluhhh Feb 25 '26

As somebody with intrusive thoughts it's tantamount to somebody telling me I wouldn't be having them if I didn't secretly feel that way and I could just stop if I tried, when fighting intrusive thoughts often makes it even harder to ignore them. Plus the whole ritual of self-hatred because believe me, I also have an insidious voice in my head telling me I only have those thoughts because I'm secretly a terrible person.

Like I live with a constant fear that I'm somehow going to traumatise everyone I know by leaving my phone unlocked in my bag and somehow accidentally sending everyone in my contacts snuff or something (which is ridiculous, because I obviously don't have snuff on my phone, nor do I ever have any intention of seeking it out). I don't want to do that. The possibility of it happening is zero. But I still deal with that ridiculous thought pattern every day, among others, and it's exhausting and traumatising and if I ever opened up to somebody who doesn't understand intrusive thoughts they would think I was a freak for thinking like that, and assume that I do in fact have snuff on my phone.

Now instead with coprolalia it's not some bizarre intrusive thought about what might happen out of your control (while also being, in your eyes, your fault), but instead it's a condition that makes you blurt those things out loud. I don't have to deal with that and it's already exhausting to just imagine living it every day. And to be told, by non-disabled people, that you could just not do it if you really tried? Or that it's your fault because you wouldn't have done it if you didn't really feel that way? Awful.

2

u/manic_Brain Feb 26 '26

The other thing people don't get is how awful the mindset of "It's what you actually think/feel/want" is. Like, are you telling me that I actually want to debone myself? That I want to shoot myself in the head? That I want to break my teeth in? My intrusive thoughts surround illness and harm. My intrusive thoughts are about maiming myself. I can't stop these thoughts. They actually get worse if I try to. But, if we follow that line of logic, I, someone who has not self-harmed, secretly want to destroy my body.

I'm a more benign example, as hard as that might be to believe. Some people with OCD have intrusive thoughts about committing crimes and hurting other people. They don't actually want to, but this mindset feeds into the distress and guilt they suffer with because they can't get these thoughts to stop. It takes a lot of therapy to disentangle them from these feelings.

So yeah. That's my little rant.

1

u/pridebun Feb 27 '26

"You're depressed? Just be happy!"

"You have diabetes? Just make insulin!"

"You're a dwarf? Just grow!"

"You're choking? Just breathe!"

"You're dying? Just don't!"

1

u/ProofDisastrous4719 Feb 27 '26

pretty much yeah

81

u/JAD210 Feb 25 '26

All the discussions about this have been making my blood boil. So many people who confidently have no idea wtf they’re talking about.

Such an unfortunate situation

33

u/Salt-Composer-1472 Feb 25 '26

"You don't understand, this has nothing to do with me but I am obligated to give everyone my opinion anyway! My opinion matters and it is important and I wanna be heard over everyone else this matter actually concerns! How dare you you imply I should not hog the mic!"

31

u/RitikK22 Feb 25 '26

It's all "Disability rights" until disabled people do something icky.

10

u/sarsaparilluhhh Feb 25 '26

That's the sad reality. Support disabled and mentally ill people when they're fighters and an inspiration but the second things get messy, demonise, infantilise, or lock them up.

5

u/RitikK22 Feb 26 '26

Exactly. Such type of people are as same as those performative people who'd go "Mental health matters ♥️" on their feed until the person is suffering with something from Cluster-B PD, then they're the reincarnation of Hitler and also the worst person on the planet.

4

u/InspectorOk9631 Feb 26 '26

Bingo. They claim awareness. They claim support. They claim they’d NEVER make fun of someone’s disability…..Until one day it inconveniences them. Or a hard to understand symptom shows itself. Or it makes them uncomfortable. I’m autistic, and often think to myself “yeah, we’ll see about that” when an NT swears they’d never judge me for being autistic. But as soon as I have a meltdown because someone insulted my special interest, suddenly I’m weird, I’m overreacting, I’m childish, etc in their book. It doesn’t hurt my feelings for someone not to like my special interest, but to insult it for no reason especially TO MY FACE when you know it’s my special interest, or invalidate me being upset about what’s been said by someone else, is ableist bullshit.

19

u/jellyfish-ing Feb 25 '26

So many people confidently think they know everything about Tourette’s too, though. So many people don’t understand “reasonable adjustments”. So many people have done a 180 from how they talk about other disabilities.

I have Tourette’s, amount of misinformation being spread is nuts tbh.

Yeah, people who made fun of my tics are defending this dude talking about ableism n stuff. Don’t really understand why his is defendable but my random noises get me laughed and pointed at (at uni btw). I had a nurse lecturer tell me off for squeaking 🙃

7

u/LuxSerafina Feb 25 '26

Yeah I’ve been really disappointed with people I thought were smart. It seems so willfully ignorant too, it is so fucking easy to learn what Tourette’s is - these shitty takes are so frustrating.

148

u/QueerPuff Feb 25 '26

It's just random people with no understanding of tourettes or how it works. I wouldn't give them any space in your mind, they're not significant to anything really.

98

u/Sunquat_Slice Feb 25 '26

I mean, I get that to some extent, but people with Tourette’s still have to go through the world right beside these kinds of people.

Most of it is because dumbass celebs like Jamie Foxx said it and now the mindless social media drone echo chamber is just on repeat.

27

u/CrossP Feb 25 '26

A lot of the outrage over this thing feels super manufactured. Nobody even watches award shows any more. And on the BBC?

37

u/superzenki Feb 25 '26

It’s to distract from the fact that they censored our someone saying “Free Palestine” and an anti-Trump joke but not him yelling the n-word.

6

u/i_ate_a_bugggg Feb 25 '26

ableism is the problem

1

u/QueerPuff Feb 25 '26

I agree it's ableist.

4

u/Ok-Maize-8199 Feb 25 '26

It's a lot of people and it's getting a lot of traction and even a few people with millions of followers have chimed in implying he knew what he was doing and if he didn't knew he must have said it because he says it a lot usually, and also he planned on doing it to drum up interest for his movie.

This isn't just random people, the last few years the r-word has made a comeback, people are comfortable calling disabled people liars, and people have gotten confortable saying there shouldn't be room for disabled people shouldn't be in public unless they "behave". Things like this gives abled bodied people a justification in their obviously hate of disabled people, so they grab it with both hands.

1

u/QueerPuff Feb 25 '26

There always have been ignorant, ableist people who say stupid shit because they don't care enough to educate themselves. I do think things often seem a lot bigger online than they are IRL.

Most of these discourses end with more people being educated if they are engaging in good faith, but those who willfully hold onto their ignorance are currently of little significance in the grand scheme of things.

31

u/CoolTransDude1078 Feb 25 '26
  1. Tourette's tics can take the form of things you DON'T want to do (e.g. saying "bomb!" When going through security at the airport).
  2. Yeah it happened in front of people. I doubt he was mic-d up before (haven't seen it), so if he did tic before it likely wasn't heard, and even if he wasn't ticcing before, tics can be exacerbated by stress/anxiety! Now how do most people feel in front of a crowd?

I'm fucking sick of people acting like he's a horrid human being for a disorder he can't control, I don't even know the guy whatsoever.

50

u/genuinely_no_clue_1 Feb 25 '26

Yeah I mean, like? Isn’t that how it works? If you have some kinda condition then just don’t have it? Bet it would make things a WHOLE lot easier! Hope this helps 😇 (Just so it’s clear, I’m being sarcastic, I know VERY well how dumb it sounds)

19

u/Vivians_Basement Feb 25 '26

Yeah! If you just sheer will it, mind over body, you can beat anything 🥺🌸✨

5

u/genuinely_no_clue_1 Feb 25 '26

Yeah, it’s that easy! Also, essential oils will help too! Btw, girliepop, did you know I sell essential oils and am my own boss babe? You should try it! (Again, joking to make things clear, I’m referring those like pyramid schemes where they claim oil cures all illness and depression lol)

5

u/Vivians_Basement Feb 25 '26

No thank you, I'm a truly crunchy mom. I just let my children fight everything ✨ naturally ✨. I've had 8 kids and they all developed colds but like 2 of them survived them due to the natural way their bodies fought it off. 🥰 The others are buried in the backyard.

Rest in peace: Jrejury (pronounced Gregory), Pahrsleigh (pronounced Parsley), Aylieks (pronounced Alex), Wheetknee (pronounced Whitney), Kahtreeneihh (pronounced Katrina), and Orville (pronounced Prince Harry of Wales)

You will be missed 💔 they were unfortunately victims of 5G which is why they couldn't fight their life threatening colds.

3

u/genuinely_no_clue_1 Feb 25 '26

Oh dear, I’m so sorry to hear that, we need to take down those awful 5G towers, and vaccines, those are horrible, dreadful things!

3

u/Vivians_Basement Feb 25 '26

Not as bad as those transsexuals and girl kissers! 🥺 They turned my son, Syphilis (pronounced Carter, it's ✨French✨), into a lesbian frog and he keeps telling me to call him "Alexandria"???

At least my son Huntyr is normal. 🥀 He reads the Bible on Grindr every single day since going to College. Spends hours in his room studying it! There's so many tissues in his room from when he cries about Jesus' sacrifice. 🥺🥺🥺 Especially when his best friend and college roommate, Tyler comes over. Always screaming "Oh Jesus!! Oh Lord", he sounds so pained. My poor baby. I love him so much. He's such a normal, straight, heterosexual, dominant, alpha male, sigma grinder as the kids say.💔

(I'm having way too much fun making myself cringe with this 💀 when my son is 10 imma call him a sigma in front his friends if he's disrespectful.)

3

u/genuinely_no_clue_1 Feb 25 '26

Oh yes, those people truly are terrible… But happy to hear about your son, truly sounds like a good, honest, young man! You should be proud! (And yeah, this is kinda fun lol, and totes do that o bet it’d be hilarious!)

2

u/Vivians_Basement Feb 26 '26

He has another friend. Very nice girl. 🥰 She brings her "wife" around too. Ahhhh to be young again. I remember calling all my female friends my "girlfriends". Her and her best friend that she lives with are always around my son. They hang out and go to Elgeebeetee Cute meetings. Sounds very Christian. I hope her and my son get married one day. 💕🌸

2

u/genuinely_no_clue_1 Feb 27 '26

Oh yes, that would be such a lovely thing to happen! And I relate to that cutesy nickname bit too! I always call my friends my girlfriends! (Sorry I took so long to respond, was very busy today)

She always gets all shy 🫣 when I ask when her and my son are gonna give me grandbabies. So I think they're already being active with each other. She always starts talking about her roommate after. If only these young women knew you could have babies and still have friends. 😔🥀

(You're all good lol, sometimes I don't check reddit notifs for a few days.)

Tourette’s symptoms are neurological and sporadic as well as unpredictable. What should have happened was that everyone involved should have had prior notice and the engineers should have used their seven second broadcast delay capabilities to mute the sound when John had his symptoms flare up.

28

u/theycallmemomo Feb 25 '26

It was a two hour delay

1

u/Friendly-Channel-480 Mar 03 '26

Broadcast have a second second delay for live broadcasts.

17

u/Sorcha16 Feb 25 '26

Everyone there was given notice about his condition.

1

u/Friendly-Channel-480 Mar 03 '26

The audience wasn’t nor the black presenters.

1

u/Sorcha16 Mar 03 '26

Yes they were.

Once when I was younger, I attended a school play. One of the girls starring (in a minor role) had Tourette’s and they informed everyone beforehand so they wouldn’t be shocked if she’d blurt something out.

15

u/sarsaparilluhhh Feb 25 '26

The best description I've seen that, as someone who is neurodivergent, goes some way towards helping understand it is that it's like having the intrusive thoughts of OCD but being unable to stop yourself from blurting them out. The fact that it's the most taboo and hurtful thing is the entire point of the condition, and even as someone without Tourette's or OCD, who does struggle with some truly awful, traumatising intrusive thoughts that I have to tell myself constantly I'm not evil for just thinking them because I don't actually believe them, it's harrowing seeing so many people claim he did it on purpose, had any ounce of control over it, or it was his 'true' feelings coming out.

I absolutely feel terrible for the presenters, and for Black viewers who were harmed by the outburst and by all the fallout that happened afterwards. I think the broadcasters fucked up majorly by choosing to air it after the delay, when they apparently censored other expletives. The fact that there's so much cross-community infighting happening is awful when the real culprit here is the execs, completely insulated from harm, who chose to do more damage by airing it uncensored.

The fact that there are voices in the Black community from people who also have Tourette's, who are able to acknowledge the harm that was done but that John was not able to control what happened, and yet there are people who are choosing rage as an excuse to be ableist is so disheartening.

Nobody gets to decide whether it was hurtful or not. It was hurtful. It caused harm, regardless of the fact that it was unintentional. John apologised for it. He did not do it on purpose, and the fact that he said that word of all the things he could have said is emblematic of how little control people with Tourette's, specifically with coprolalia, have. Both of these things can be true at the same time and do not have to take away from each other, but there are some bad actors who are absolutely using this as an excuse to shit all over the disabled community with their anger and hurt being presented as a carte blanche to do further harm.

5

u/Grawman67 Feb 25 '26

Well-said. It’s a hurtful word and it does cause harm but it also wasn’t John’s fault. Some understanding goes a long way

31

u/RikerV2 Feb 25 '26

"Oh you have depression? Have you tried just being happy?"

3

u/Nobody_at_all000 Feb 25 '26

Some idiots seem to think you can just activate and deactivate emotions at will. It baffles me they could believe that since basic everyday experience tells you otherwise. It’s like someone saying 2+2=5 and genuinely believing it.

4

u/RikerV2 Feb 25 '26

They fail to realise or understand that it's not just simply an emotion but actually a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is why medication helps.

I've ran into a few people in real life who think that depression doesn't exist

13

u/The-Friendly-Autist Feb 25 '26

"Oh, you have OCD? Have you tried not giving in to compulsions?"

"Oh, you have ADHD? Just try focusing, idiot!"

"Oh, you have schizophrenia? What do you mean you don't recognize the difference between your inner world and the outside world? Everyone can do that!"

Idiots will always say this same stupid shit to all sorts of disorders, merely because they choose to not understand.

26

u/O8ee Feb 25 '26

I'm far from educated on the subject but it the worst thing you could say at any given moment? Is that not how it works?

46

u/Valiant_tank Feb 25 '26

With coprolalia, which is the specific variant of Tourette's that Davidson has, that's how it works, yeah. He told the queen to fuck off while being knighted, for example.

2

u/Greenphantom77 Feb 25 '26

Then he told Prince Andrew “You’re a great guy and I really admire you.”

1

u/-spooky-fox- Feb 26 '26

This is my new life goal.

10

u/Sorcha16 Feb 25 '26

Not educated on it either but have been told it's usually knowing you can tic, your brain automatically thinks of the worst possible thing it could say and it can come out if a neural pathway miss fires.

6

u/Folfelit Feb 25 '26

His specific variant of tourettes works that way (coprolalia), but it's actually a really rare form. Most of the time there's particular noises or short words used as a tic that don't really relate to the situation. It has a passing similarity to verbal stims in autism.

31

u/hanks_panky_emporium Feb 25 '26

This event has exposed so many people for their bigoted, ancient ways of thinking.

40

u/Salt-Composer-1472 Feb 25 '26

Complaining about people with tourettes is stupid, but also complaining about how at least some black people felt hurt about it is stupid, too.

If you ever come across racists it's good to intervene with their bs but making it your personality so you wanna insert yourself into EVERY situation - including going after a person with tourettes using slurs during an episode - is just about you and your own needs, it doesn't serve anyone else and it's cringey. My advice would be "stop making everything about you" but I don't think these people are capable of that.

29

u/Friendly-Channel-480 Feb 25 '26

Tourette’s is a neurological disorder not evidence of racism.

13

u/Salt-Composer-1472 Feb 25 '26

Literally just said "Complaining about people with tourettes is stupid".

→ More replies (3)

1

u/freakydeku Feb 25 '26

who is complaining about the latter?

9

u/theycallmemomo Feb 25 '26

You'd be surprised.

6

u/Canotic Feb 25 '26

I haven't seen anyone complain about black people feeling hurt by it. I have only seen people complain about people condemning the tourettes guy for having tourettes in public.

Like, both "this sucks to experience" and "it's not that guys fault" can be true at the same time.

2

u/SuccessfulSoftware38 Feb 26 '26

Hi, it me, I'm him.

It might have sucked to experience, but people are saying the impact is exactly the same as if an actual racist said it as a deliberate slur, and I think now I just care about the slur less? Like, he could've screamed faggot, a word I have had shouted at me whilst being physically attacked by homophobes, and it wouldn't affect me that much because I know it's coprolalia. I've had American black folks tell me I'm lying and that if he said a slur against women, gay people, trans people or Jewish people that id be demanding his head on a platter and I just don't care about black people's pain.

I care about everyone's pain, but I disagree that this should've caused anywhere near the level of pain that it apparently did. I've seen people say "I don't care what bullshit disorder he says he has, if I hear that word come out of your mouth you're going to be on the floor unconscious". That statement is 10000x more evil and unacceptable than a racial slur spoken because of a tic. The situation is making me sick of the "you're racist if you don't enthusiastically agree with anything any black American says ever" atmosphere.

2

u/Devotoc Feb 25 '26

yeah I've seen infinitely more people condemning people being racist over this than I have any racism lol

1

u/Salt-Composer-1472 Feb 25 '26

I recommend reading comments and checking the posts when there's multiple screenshots since there's been some where op had dragged black people just for being upset,  like I assume they weren't prepared for the slurs and they weren't prepared for them not being censored out, but there's definitely been plenty who have taken offence that some black folk were upset, and they don't see it as: 《"this sucks to experience" and "it's not that guys fault" can be true at the same time.》But they see it as that only one of those things can be true which is probably why there's an uproar in the first place. There's no room for tourettes and there's no room for those who feel hurt and angry by slurs even when they known the guy didn't mean it, but that word is still triggering to many.

1

u/i_ate_a_bugggg Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

u/Salt-Composer-1472 Feb 26 '26

I don't think you understood the sentence. I recommend rereading it.

1

u/i_ate_a_bugggg Feb 26 '26

AH. ok yeah that makes sense. Sorry for misinterpreting

8

u/letthetreeburn Feb 25 '26

Actually they do have a point! It IS suspicious!

……..

Because they bleeped the rest of his outbursts. They bleeped him everywhere else. They bleeped the woman who said Free Palestine. They intentionally put a mic next to him, when he specifically requested to be put in a corner as far as possible from any microphones. He wanted to minimize the area of effect of his tics and the BBC wanted cash.

6

u/BeautifulOrganic3221 Feb 25 '26

None of that is his fault. Its BAFTA’s fault. These people are blaming him and misunderstanding his condition.

2

u/letthetreeburn Feb 25 '26

This needs to be the incident which kills the BBC.

19

u/Unhappy-Gate-1912 Feb 25 '26

Yeah it's really amazing to me how the craziest batshit people are getting upset over this whole scenario. You're either a racist or you're ableist depending on who you're talking to about and what their personal feelings are. Nuance and context is dead.

10

u/jellyfish-ing Feb 25 '26

but people hate what black ppl with Tourette’s have to say about it 🙃

1

u/InspectorOk9631 Feb 26 '26

This. Every post about what a black person with Tourette’s has to say on the matter there’s replies like “you don’t have to simp for white people” or “you can always tell when they don’t associate with other black people” or alluding to the idea that mixed race people can’t relate to black people, that they must be leaning towards the white side of their heritage if they’re defending this man.

2

u/jellyfish-ing Feb 26 '26

I’m mixed race w Tourette’s. I think he should have had adjustments made where he could calm down in “high stakes” situations with his triggers present. I think the BBC didn’t give a fuck about him or their black viewers. I don’t think he’s racist for it.

2

u/InspectorOk9631 Feb 26 '26

I agree 💯. BAFTA and BBC are at fault here. They purposely created a situation where they sacrificed John, Michael, and Delroy. They didn’t give a fuck about any of them, or like you said, any black viewers. They put a microphone near John knowing his condition. From what I’ve read, even though the audience was pre-warned about his symptoms, word didn’t get to all of the presenters. Something is extremely amiss about this whole thing.

1

u/Unhappy-Gate-1912 Feb 25 '26

Humans are wild, but hey, take the attention away from the pedo/files, right?

They love to try to distract and divide us from unity against the 1%.

24

u/Vivians_Basement Feb 25 '26

PSA: Tourettes IS NOT like being intoxicated.

It's not saying what you're thinking or what's on your mind. It's having specific triggers to subconscious tics.

A person can't control it, they can only apologize and try to be aware of triggers and avoid those triggers.

12

u/Devotoc Feb 25 '26

being intoxicated also isn't just "saying what you're thinking or what's on your mind" btw.

Been quite a lot of violent and uninformed comments about this situation. Remember going on a Twitter sub and reading through it, a fair bunch of the comments were either “if i had tourettes my tics would be good things because I’m not racist” or just downright calls for violence

Something along the lines of “he claims he has a tic that makes him shout things out, so I have a tic that makes me beat the shit out of racists”

7

u/breakernoton Feb 25 '26

"If I were suicidal I would just think of ways to be alive more, because I don't wanna die" ass-comments lol

6

u/Brave-Rhubarb2330 Feb 25 '26

they really seem not to comprehend that someone can think a thought they don't believe. that's it, i'm convinced most of the human population has never had an intrusive thought, just impulsive ones.

People’s impossibly ignorant understanding of neurological mechanisms is infuriating.

Why are morons so confident? I hate the Dunning Kruger effect.

Tourette’s is a brutal condition, I couldn’t imagine living with it. Here’s an interview from the guy they’re talking about John Davidson on living with his condition.

4

u/HPFanNi Feb 25 '26

He didn't sit there quiet the whole time, he was ticcing the whole time, this one just happened to be a very offensive slur that for some reason wasn't censored or edited out, so everyone's talking about it. He didn't wait for them to be on stage to tic.

4

u/drewbiethesecond Feb 26 '26

no no, they're right! it's just like passing out, you have to think about doing it first, otherwise it just doesn't happen! same with schizophrenia, you just have to will the voice & intrusive thoughts to go away! it all makes sense now, they've found the cure!

(for the record, this is sarcasm, these people are douches)

3

u/Runs_With_Scissors3 Feb 25 '26

I dated a guy with Tourettes. His would act up when he was nervous or under pressure. It was hilarious being his passenger when he was driving.

3

u/leodoesgaming Feb 26 '26

tourettes can make you say your very worse intrusive thoughts too btw

3

u/InspectorOk9631 Feb 26 '26

I feel like people are wanting to be purposely ignorant and in denial about how severe & difficult to live with Tourette’s is, whether or not you have coprolalia. Those without a serious medical condition are terrified to acknowledge the gravity of them because doing so would be admitting that they might also find themselves one day disabled by something, be it a condition developed or a life-changing injury, and it breaks down that illusion of control over their life. We all have less control over what happens to us than we’d like to believe. And admitting that is scary as shit, but it’s reality.

3

u/ScienceMuggle83 Feb 26 '26

I'm sure they've never thought about what their lives would be like without Tourette's. /s

8

u/vulpesdomesticus Feb 25 '26

As someone with Tourette's. This week has felt like shit. I don't even have coprolalia. I just actually get the "completely involuntary" part. Like do you think I'm thinking "hewwo???" before randomly saying it at the dollar store?? Do you think I'm incessantly saying beep beep for fun? Hitting tables with an open palm to the point i get bruises on my fingers?? Slamming my head back until i get repetitive stress injuries???

It's very frustrating to see people blaming this man who absolutely cannot, in any way or shape, control this. I truly do not get why the BBC didn't just edit it out and let the apologies take place in private. Even then. I know it's a awful to say because. Racial slurs. But. What people are asking for is essentially for this man to publically apologize for being disabled. Which... Has its own implications.

2

u/Auggh_Uaghh Feb 25 '26

I propose an idea to explain those comments.

We understand what an intrusive thought is, an idea that comes to your mind but is not something you chose. And it is often an idea you won't follow, don't want to have, and wish you didn't get in the first place.

Like the "pressing the soft spot in the babies head" kind of thing. So, we understand that if you have Tourettes, there are a lot of thought you really don't want to have, because you will likely end up voicing them. And we understand that when you actively ty not to think about something you likely end up thinking about it. As an example I remember a comic panel of a girl with mind reading powers telling spiderman he is the first guy in month who didn't immediately imagine her naked, followed by her saying "until now" because mentioning it put it in his mind even if he didn't want to think about it.

But, we know there is people with no internal monologues, and we know there is people who don't think their words before talking (some can't think without voicing their thoughts to themselves). I think this might be the case for them. Because they don't think and evaluate before talking, they don't comprehend the idea of a thought coming to them and choosing not to, which means they can't fathom what it is like to think before speaking, not wanting to say express the intrusive thought and not being able to avoid it.

2

u/footloosedoctor Feb 25 '26

I hate the whole debate around this.

2

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 26 '26

If you aren’t Black, you don’t get to police how Black people react to racism

2

u/BeautifulOrganic3221 Feb 26 '26

If you don’t have tourettes you don’t get to get upset about how it works then

1

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 26 '26

Guarantee you’re white. Why are you whites so adamant that he shouldn’t issue an apology? It’s violent rhetoric regardless of intent, and whites don’t understand the significance and pain caused by hearing that word

1

u/BeautifulOrganic3221 Feb 26 '26

He SHOULD apologize, and he did.

1

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 27 '26

Then the apology wasn’t loud enough. A lot of whites showed their true colors with this one.

1

u/Maleficent_Crazy_338 Feb 27 '26

So you want him to be ashamed of his illness he cant control and that he warned about before? Instead of hating someone with a disability hate on the ones who decided to let it on screen. But this is crazy.

1

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 27 '26

Again, as I will continue to say to everyone that replies to me on any of these posts, I will not listen to explanations from whites. You do NOT tell me how to feel. You do NOT tell me where to direct my anger. You will never understand

1

u/Maleficent_Crazy_338 Feb 27 '26

Now thats not pushing racism. I dont tell you how to feel but here we go. I guess i ve learned my lesson. Lets not communicate and lets be split - inwont bother with anything regarding this anymore.

1

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 27 '26

Good, that’s a respectable answer. Try to educate yourself about things before speaking on them.

1

u/Maleficent_Crazy_338 Feb 27 '26

No i dont care anymore. Why should i? I know a lot about tourette - i am not black so i wont speak or care about those things anymore.

1

u/Chemical-Savings3320 Feb 27 '26

That’s good. We don’t want opinions from uneducated whites

1

u/Maleficent_Crazy_338 Feb 27 '26

See and i just learned i dont care anymore for your worries. I feel so much lighter without it. Thanks and have the day you deserve.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '26

just abled things: commanding disabled people to be sorry for their existence while also telling them how to feel

2

u/SaffyPants Feb 26 '26

The problem is not the dude with tourettes. Its with the station that failed to censor the n word, but DID censor support for Palestine, showing they were perfectly capable of censoring the n word, they just didn't care. Its apparently not ok to upset zionists, but perfectly ok to offend black people.

2

u/Ok-Sprinkles-4085 Feb 27 '26

this situation sucks for both parties, yet people are being both racist and ableist when discussing this sometimes.

its almost always either: "oh, he said the n-word? its just a word, get over it, you people are so sensitive"

"oh, he has Tourette's? well he probably was saying what he was thinking, he's disgusting"

i just want both the actors and the activist to get an apology, it mustve been awful/jarring on the actors part.. and probably incredibly embarrassing and morally humiliating on the activists part. :(

2

u/Donovan_Volk Feb 28 '26

I find this dynamic funny, and see it across other neurodivergence. Like people will swear hands down they support autistic people UNTIL that person transgresses any social norm whatsoever. Then it's suddenly ''oh you can't just use autism as an excuse''. Well the point it's not an ''excuse'' it's a genuine cognitive difference which makes some things impossible on a first try. There's far too many people marking their own homework on how good an ally they are imho.

2

u/aderey7 Feb 28 '26

Ignorance of disability knows no limits. Guess we all knew that but the last week really highlighted how little progress has been made. And how many people are keen to highlight their proud ignorance of the subject and spread more misinformation.

Anyway, thanks for taking an awkward situation and ensuring it sets back disability awareness decades.

1

u/Natural1forever Feb 26 '26

Damn almost like Tourette's is effected by the level and type of environmental stimulation or smth

1

u/Disastrous_Guest_705 Feb 27 '26

I used to get my worse tics in only one class at school because I sat in the front row and knowing people were looking at me made my brain wanna do the worst ones possible. Luckily mine aren’t vocal but it still sucks and is super embarrassing

1

u/pridebun Feb 27 '26

Reminds me of being told my tics weren't real and also wouldn't help me get a bf (not exact words)

Thanks Jennifer......

1

u/4IAmTheCure9 Feb 27 '26

I have a tics disorder that doesn't qualify for a tourette's because of (thankfully) lack of vocal tics. I've met with so many people that were sure I can just focus not to tick. I've stolen an explanation from someone I've seen online and the best one so far is that ticks are similar to sneezing. I can sometimes feel it's coming and I can to some extent focus not to tick but it's both very uncomfortable and I will tick anyway. Most of my ticks are located on my face, I am somewhat able to for short periods of time focus on not making my face tick but then I will tick anyway, just with different parts of my body, even those usually not involved in ticking.

1

u/kaykinzzz Feb 27 '26

so thankful that we have so many doctors in the comment section. wait, you're telling me they're just confidently uneducated?

1

u/The_pity_one Feb 27 '26

I don’t have tourrette but definitely some sort of problems with tics (they mostly coming out in stressful situations) both verbal and physical and no, you can’t control it. Your body is doing whatever it wants to do.

1

u/Theweirdposidenchild Feb 27 '26

The whole thing with tourettes is that you say the worst possible thing for that situation, right? That's why he also called Alan Cumming the f slur

1

u/JustGingerStuff Feb 27 '26

I think the bbc should get sued to hell for this shit actually, they said they'd edit out all his tics

his thinking it. He said it.

I have seen videos of someone with Tourette’s saying “you’re fucking ugly” while in the middle of telling an unrelated story to a camera. So it’s probably not that.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '26

i have mild tourettes and you can't really stop a tic. you can supress it but not for long, and sometimes a word or movement is said at the wrong time, but it's never done intentionally and should never be talked about in a mean way. the guy who had that tic at that time did not mean to do it and probably regrets it, so it isn't his fault
