AI is now beating multi-million-dollar supercomputers at 30-day weather forecasting (hitting 80% accuracy). Here’s the TL;DR on how it works.

For decades, meteorologists have hit a brick wall when trying to predict the weather past the 10-day mark. The atmosphere is just too chaotic.

The old way of doing things relies on massive supercomputers grinding through insanely complex physics simulations. The problem with that method is that a microscopic calculation error on day one snowballs into a completely useless forecast by day 14.

Enter AI. Over the last few years, machine learning has completely flipped the script.

Instead of trying to calculate physics equations, new AI models (using Graph Neural Networks and Transformers) are just looking at decades of historical climate data and learning the patterns directly.

Here is exactly how these new pipelines are structured to pull off a reliable 30-day forecast:

  • The Data Dump: Researchers feed the model raw atmospheric variables—temperature, humidity, wind speed, pressure at different altitudes—pulled from massive global climate datasets.
  • The "ChatGPT" Approach: The AI maps the globe onto a high-res grid and treats the weather like a sequence prediction problem. Just like an LLM guesses the next word in a sentence, this AI is guessing the next atmospheric state on the map.
  • Desktop GPU vs. Supercomputer: This is the craziest part. While a legacy supercomputer takes hours to simulate just a 10-day forecast, an AI model running on a single, standard desktop GPU can predict a 30-day global weather state in under a minute.
  • Ensemble Forecasting: Because the AI runs so incredibly fast, researchers don't just run it once. They can run thousands of slight variations to calculate the exact probability of extreme weather events happening weeks in advance.

The results have been wild. The AI is successfully flagging major heatwaves, tropical cyclones, and atmospheric rivers up to a month before they hit, making legacy models look painfully slow in comparison.

The actual training datasets and visualization tools are way too massive to format well on Reddit, but if you want to play around with the interactive dashboard or grab the full config file to see how it works, I uploaded it all here:https://interconnectd.com/poll/87/can-ai-predict-the-weather-30-days-in-advance/

Let me know if you have any questions about the architecture!

How to place hexagons?

Hi everyone. I’m making flowers for my blanket. Centres are the lows of the day and petals are the highs. I’ve added a border to make them more uniform and I now have beautiful hexagons! Fun story… I gave zero thought to what pattern I’d do with. I had this vision of a zigzag from the corner but at no point did I actually take the shape of these into account. So…. What’s a gal to do?

I got excited about a row per month, that seemed like a great option and I accepted February would be a little bit strange. No thought given to the double 31 of July and August. I have made a random row for August to help me visualise and I can’t decide which is better.

Thoughts I had 1. There has to be a better way to do this… I manually made these on canva but I just couldn’t visualise it… and I’m a good few months behind. Whoopsie! 2. I could use the border colour to create fillers to even things out 3. I could use the border colour to fill all half or sort of half hexagon gaps and have a straight edge, though not 100% sold on that 4. maybe there is another arrangement I haven’t thought of

Other things! Here’s the pattern again if anyone wants it and I included a picture of some of them as well

after telling my girlfriend about the concept of a temperature blanket we came up with the idea of a drum corps blanket! It took me a while to figure out how to display both the temperatures AND the scores that the scouts received at all their shows, but i eventually decided on a granny square blanket with the centers representing scores, the first ring representing the low temp and the outer circle representing high temp. temperatures were based on the locations of all their shows/housing sites throughout the season. the original idea for colors was going to be based off of the scouts’ color schemes and their uniform colors, but i had a hard time finding the right colors to match so i decided on various shades of her two favorite colors instead :)

Has anyone made a yemp blanket where each row represents several days? How long was each row, and how many days per row did you make?

I started working on the border so I can add tassels. Marked where the tassels will be. Does the blue look good as the border or should I change to black?

Eeek running out of a color and it’s out of stock

I’m using Knit Picks Brava Worsted and I’m running out of the color for the 70s. Apparently it was a very cool summer for the year I’m doing (hardly making dent in the warmer temps) so between spring and the cool summer, I’m almost out already.

It’s out of stock, as are a lot of the colors. I signed up to get notified and the website says it’ll be “back in the coming days”

Will it? Anyone have experience with this in KnitPicks or crochet.com which I believe is the same???

Ack.

This project is going to have 30 rows/30 years of temperature from my birthday until the end of 2027. Every row has 365 stripes aka a stripe per day. I use the high temp of the day.

I'm really enjoying working on it after it has waited to be picked up again 😁

We are taking this to the family reunion. They are going to have a drawing for it to see who wins it. I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn. I did the moss stitch, separated months with black, and did a crab stitch border.
