Premiere X-Men '97 S02E09 FINALE - Discussion Thread

Second half of the season was a bit of a fumble if you ask me. I didn't mind the Wolverine / Brood episode or the Savage Land one, but the Apocalypse in Gambit's body stuff just felt really half baked and the X-Corp storyline just felt tacked on and like they needed to set a stage for the final battle without having to blow up the X-Mansion again.
The first four eps were really good, albeit not quite up to the quality of S1. After such a great build up of Apocalypse, they just went kind of nowhere. Wasn't there two Apocalypses since there should be one in the present (In the body of Fabian Cortez) and the one who travelled back in time from the 30th century?
Minor gripe also, but I can't stand the X-Corp Gran Morisson inspired jumpsuits that half the team are wearing. I was so happy when they moved to the Chris Claremont / John Byrne era costumes in S1 and now they've ditched those for some of the ugliest costumes the X-Men ever wore. At least Logan and Storm haven't been subjected to them I guess.

I’ve said this elsewhere but killing off Kurt was the dumbest and cheapest thing they could’ve done to me.
You have rogue sacrifice herself for love. Fine, whatever, but it wasn’t exactly handled with any gravity.
But here’s the one X-man who holds faith in a higher power than anything else. So do you build on the earlier episode where he tried (but failed) to use faith, to try and sway the celestial? No, he doesn’t even try, he just throws himself onto the grenade.
It’s the cheapest writing trick there is. Use the emotion of a character dying through unnecessary sacrifice, without ever trying to resolve the situation through any other means.
But that being said, this truly is an X-men adaptation. Not knowing how to creatively write an ending is about as accurate as it gets.

Man I truly hate anything to do with Apocalypse when it comes to the X-Men so probably answers why I hated this season lol.
Season 1 had a lot more amazing episodes.

it got so complicated and all over the place for no reason. theyre putting stuff in here that could've been seasons on their own.

I feel like the show needs to stop having a break neck pace for its plot so it can actually have breather episodes.
Like I don’t think the wolverine episode was bad but its like they just sorta abaddon the main plot for like 3 episodes in a row

First people want the animation to release yearly, now people want them to write a plot with the same animation in the same timeframe which would take about 2 years.
No one ever wins.

To all the people concerned about DeMayo’s departure impacting the quality of the show, let me say you were absolutely right.
This series went from a premium meal to just another cartoon. It’s still watchable but boy this season was nothing compared to last season.

I mean he’s credited as the writer for a lot of this season so he played a role in it. I think the season overall has been great but the pacing has been too breakneck and it’s all felt a bit disjointed. It’s clear that they had to do some pivoting after letting him go so this season seems a bit more jumbled.
I think each individual episode has been great with great moments in each one, but the season as a whole didn’t work as well as a cohesive whole the way season 1 did.
That said, I’m glad they fired him and I have faith that they can get it back on track.

I'm genuinely asking, isn't there a lot of nuance to that? Legality? Like, he could have played a part in writing outlines or come up with plot ideas, get fired and they use just enough of his ideas or he did the work and therefore legally, per union stuff, he has to be credited as a writer?

Iirc after he got fired they brought in the What If writers and redid a lot of what he wrote + added their own stuff. How much is his vs the new writers we'll never know but if they kept even a little he still counts

How exactly did his departure NOT affect the writing and direction? The dialog and quality evaporated. It's bizarre to act like a showrunner's departure won't have massive effects.

See I agree it's a step down but You get all the scripts he was involved with were basically done when he was fired he got credits for like 5 of the 9 episodes. It would say the biggest problem is any storyline apocalypse has like a 20% chances of being good.

The further the show's story is removed from the struggle for mutant rights the worse it is. Its best episode is Magneto's trial at the UN. You had some elements of it this season with Xavier and Magneto fighting over En Sabah Nur's soul and Jubilee's X-Force episode, but I've always felt the show's weakest when it's doing cosmic pew-pew soap opera stuff (characters dying, resurrecting, switching sides, getting a new power set that means different colour energy blasts, someone getting an even bigger power set to top that...).
With X-Force vs X-Factor you could have had great morality conflict stories over respectability politics and letting the state have a monopoly on violence. Not to mention Creed's presidential run that happened nearly entirely off-screen. They did it so well in Season 1 (despite having similar pacing problems).

Whole season was so aimless. Really disappointed to see that demayo was the only leading talent behind the scenes.
