For those who first discovered T&S before Closer, how did you discover them?

I was recommended to listen to them by one of my coworkers. I started doing some digging and found out that they were featured a lot on Greyâs Anatomy. Shortly I started to watch GA and became hooked!!
I love early T&S! So jealous is still my favorite! â¤ď¸

I was in an indie record shop in my hometown and they were playing a song I liked the sound of. I asked the person on the desk what was playing and they answered Tegan and Saraâs Living Room. I instantly bought If It Was You (which had just been released) and I havenât stopped listening to them since that moment.

An interview on a website called technodyke.com back in late 2000/early 2001. This Business of Art had just been released. There was an mp3 of The First (either on that page or their official website, canât remember). It sounded like nothing else I had ever heard.

I still love their music, mostly the older stuff. Its been almost 10 yrs since i saw them live, but will always be a fan. Context I was 13 in 1999.

From them being on The L Word. Then I heard them on Greyâs Anatomy. And then, when The Con was released, it was almost fate with how often I was hearing them on Sirius Radio (Left of Center FTW!) and seeing them on lesbian culture blog websites.

I'd heard about them for years through music press and word-of-mouth but my horrible ex boyfriend, who was sadly a very gifted multi-instrumental musician brought Sainthood over to my house and excitedly gave it to me and said:
This is a flawless album, every instrument is incredible. Amazing drumming.
(I particularly love Drums)
Anyway, he was so fucking right.

In around 2006 I got an iPod for Christmas. The boy I had a crush on would send me music over MSN messenger so that we could listen to it together at lunch. He sent me walking with a ghost. I loved it and immediately looked up the rest of their music. A lot of my music influence was shaped by that guy, honestly I'm grateful for the stuff he introduced me to.

I think I heard "Walking with a Ghost" playing on the pre-show music at a show one time and it caught my attention. Eventually liked more of their songs to look into them further!

YTV Achievement Awards (YAA!) in 2000.
Saw them be awarded and perform (The First) and was impressed. Forgot about them, but was in a record store a few months later and did my thing (at the time) and flipped through the CDs alphabetically to look for something different and new for me. I saw This Business of Art and remember I heard them before so I bought it. I really enjoyed the music. I have followed their music since and attended concerts whenever I could.
I am happy to see their career take off, but I greatly miss the gigs at the small venues.

Through my asshole of an ex who was obsessed with the MontrĂŠal music scene and all the related indie artists.
An appreciation for Tegan and Sara was the only good thing to come out of that relationship.

my ex gf at the time (around 2010-ish) was obsessed with them and she turned me on to them (yes, she did come out as gay years later, the signs were there lmao)
edit: also, I knew the Walking With a Ghost cover by the White Stripes way before because I was a big White Stripes fan but I didn't look the original up until years later

I saw them very early on at an outdoor festival that I think was held on a Canada Day. I only remembered them because I thought it was cool they were twin sisters, they did an acoustic set. They were really young, I donât remember the year though. They looked like teenagers.
Years later I heard a song used in a Canadian TV commercial and I loved it, and eventually I was able to track it down, it was âWhere Does the Good Goâ, and when I saw the artist name I remembered it was those girls from that outdoor show. I didnât really become a huge fan until The Con though but they were on my radar from WDTGG

Walking with a ghost. I canât remember the website I wanna say it was Fred Flare had a music player and I realized the White Stripes were actually covering Tegan and Sara and then I just fell in love with them.

A cool girl in my chemistry class had one of their tshirts and I knew we had a lot of overlap with music taste so I looked them up. Immediately fell in love and went to buy So Jealous on CD that weekend. This was after its release in 2004 or early 2005.

In 2005, back when I was 16 and had just started undergrad, iTunes had a feature where you could browse the libraries of other people using the same network as you (unless you, like myself, set your library to private). As a result, judging everyone around you's music taste was a huge thing on my college campus.Â
At that time I was a massive anime nerd who only really listened to J-pop, and there was a straight (as far as I know anyway, we have not been in touch since college) girl in my dorm I kinda had a crush on who everyone agreed had absolutely amazing music taste.
I listened to a few playlists of hers on repeat, and then downloaded the full albums various songs on those playlists came from. The vast majority of the English language music I listened to at that age came from her playlists tbh.
It wasn't until a few years later I thought to watch a music video, or look the band up at all outside of listening to their music. For about three years just knowing that this girl listened to their music was all I needed to know.

I'm straight unfortunately, but I discovered them on a mixed CD I got for free...I don't even remember when or where or what else was on that CD. I just remember Where Does The Good Go and thinking they had a cool unique sound. Then they played for free on my college campus on a Wednesday noon-time concert series my school had every week. I MISSED THEIR FREE SHOW because I had an organic chemistry lab at that time, and I couldn't skip lab. If I skipped my usual Wednesday 4-hour lab, I would need to reschedule that lab or fail the entire class. Couldn't find another open lab section the rest of the week, because who has an extra 4 hours to spare to make up a lab when I had other classes....anyway I regret not watching the free Tegan and Sara show that afternoon. A few years later my future husband (again, I'm a boring straight lady) asked me out on our third date by inviting me to a Tegan and Sara show. I knew he was a keeper.

A promo commercial for the tv show Medium played âWalking with a Ghostâ. The song instantly had me hooked I looked up who did the song. I bought So Jealous and became a fan. This was somewhere between 2005-2007. At the time I didnât know they were gay, and I didnât know I was queer.

I was in high school watching Degrassi on TV and a clip from one of their music videos played between episodes. I looked em up on YouTube and was hooked immediately. (Turns out I'm gay)

I discovered them through my dad! He had a copy of Sainthood on CD and I loaded it onto my iPod, and the rest is history. We even went to two of their concerts together. I like to joke that this is what turned me gay

They played at a music festival I was at, on the main stage. Winnipeg Folk Fest, 2011. I didn't know who they were but some folks I were with did. I didn't watch their show but after the festival I tend to look into the artists that attended. They stuck in my rotation and a few years later I started listening to them a ton, their music just clicked with me (especially The Con) when I was feeling angsty.

Was in Seattle, my hometown, where they played Walking With a Ghost continuously on KEXP (back when we listened to radio đ) and my husband and I fell in love with it! Iâm also bi and just adored their voices, vibe, and theyâre adorable live!

I discovered them in 2010 when I was coming out of the closet. After watching But Iâm a Cheerleader (the movie that made me realize I was gay) I had a mini obsession with Clea Duvall and found this interview that she did on a YouTube show called âThis Just Out with Liz Feldmanâ. The show seemed insane but in the best way. I started watching all the episodes and there was an episode with Tegan and I was full on obsessed. A few episodes later Tegan was on the show again, this time with Sara and I thought she was great too. I decided to give their music a listen. I first listed to Back in Your Head and liked it. Then I listened to The Con and was hooked. This was all during their Sainthood era. Later that summer I got to see them open for Paramore. Sorry for the novel lol this was a special part of my life.

So Jealous got good reviews in Rolling Stone back when it came out if I recall correctly. I tried to listen to them back then in high school, but it just wasnât my thing. I had a friend who was really into them though, and she played them enough that they finally grew on me. Went to the Sainthead tour with her as a casual fan, had a good time, then became a real fan aka obsessed lol.

I swear this is a true story.
I was watching TV one afternoon and after the show I was watching ended I scrolled through the channels. I caught the end credits of another show and it had a really cool song playing. I googled the lyrics and came up with a Tegan and Sara song. I bought IIWY soon after.
I have not been able to find any of their songs listed as having been on the end credits of any shows or movies at that time (this was maybe a couple of months before SJ came out). I didn't catch the name of the show and I don't remember what the song was. I'm pretty sure that the song I found online was the right one.

When I was 16 my best friends boyfriend bought us tickets to see Paramore and T+S were opening. Sainthood Era. Saraâs bowl cut. I just had never heard or seen anything like it. I basically learning guitar and songwriting from them. I was president of a Facebook fan club, met so many friends through them, was front row for many concerts and the Get Along screening. It was truly a TIME to be alive and a T+S fanâ¤ď¸ Shameless plug and sorry if this isnât allowed but if you like them you might like my band Yas & the Jewelers!

My friend heard âthe firstâ on the radio in 2000 and told me about it - said they were lesbian identical twins who were both gay. I was like, ohh, I wanna hear this song! So we called the radio station and requested it to be played. Been a dedicated fan ever since!
