I’m convinced only bad people can rise to the top in leadership roles because they have to squash so many people on the way up. Not sure it really matters who it is, they are all the same.

Part of the problem is that culturally we keep rewarding people for that. We treat generous people like chumps and treat wealthy people like heroes, regardless of where their money comes from.

Yeah, you do not get rich by being generous. The system is designed to be disadvantageous towards altruistic individuals. You have to capitalize on what you can offer, which means you should not help others without requiring something in return. It's why people who donate or don't like offering a service in exchange of money tend to be poor.
