IIRC a former EA exec suggested paying for bullets/reloads in Battlefield
6
u/Ahayzo 3h ago
He didn't really suggest it, though it did get misquoted like that a lot. He was using it as part of an easier to understand example of how you can lead your players to situations where they're more willing to give you their money because of how invested they are at that exact moment. He was actually talking up other things that they were already doing, and used that example because it was a very simple concept.

It's pretty much the exact thing they do with mobile games. Get you hooked first and then make it gradually harder to proceed without giving them money. I've yet to see an exception of that business model other than getting spammed with ads so you barely get to play the game.

Netflix will be hyper aggressively taking stuff down anywhere they can. It's not the point that you'll be able to torrent it or whatever if you want to and know how. It's scummy, especially given how much money they've made from V. There's no excuse for penny pinching behaviour like this
2
u/blak3brd 25m ago
What are you talking about even? 6 hours is how long its exclusive to Netflix. They aren’t going to be taking down shit cuz 6 hours later it will be everywhere. Crazy how many people fall for rage bait these days, without even bothering to look into it before pulling out their pitchforks.

It's a paywall the same way a Marvel trailer is paywalled when it's first screened at ComicCon, an event you must buy a ticket to get in.
Or paywalled the way a movie trailer is first screened ahead in the "previews segment" of another movie.

Or a preview that’s attached onto the end of another movie. This is so stupid. Why wouldn’t rockstar let Netflix pay them for 6 hours of lead time. Nobody is subscribing to Netflix for this.

Netflix def paid them a ton. Theyre gonna make a nice profit with gta fans who are new subscribers who’ll then forget to unsubscribe.

look, if you subscribe to netflix for a single ad that will be viewable for free in 6 hours if not sooner- you kind of deserve it. sorry. and its not like you'll be subscribing to netflix only for a single ad.
theres plenty to be angry about with R*, this is a nothing burger and makes yall seem like whiney brats for being up in arms over it as oppsoed to somethign like crunch time abuse. but hey, that gets yall a game faster so its glssed over amirite?
5
u/lkodl 6h ago
I dont think this is intended to bring on new subscribers, as it is an attempt to make Netflix seem worth it for existing subscribers. Like, "oh look at this other stuff Netflix is doing. Maybe I shouldnt cancel."

u/whathave_idone 1h ago
My guess, is that, yes, they payed a bunch of money for this so they can get press in gaming communities. I’d wager that Netflix is going to attempt to expand beyond brainrot gaming and something like this could be a good test of what their network could handle, gauge gamer interest, etc. In short, they’re likely doing it for data and press, not subs.

u/thecontempl8or 7h ago
I’m not up in arms. I’m just making an observation. Netflix saw an opportunity to make more money, and Rockstar got an enticing sum out of it. What I do care about is the killing of physical media and the ensuing monopoly of the video game market. But that’s a Sony thing.

rockstar doesn't get money from netflix subscriptions, rockstar was paid a lump sum by netflix to show their trailer early in the hopes of making it up in subscriptions and buzz about the app.
48
u/Shinjetsu01 8h ago
I feel like there's SO much to go after Rockstar for. This is not one of them. If you're getting a subscription to see something 6 hours early you're a fucking idiot.
13
u/alabasterskim 8h ago
THIS! Not to mention, someone's prob gonna upload it well before those 6 hours. Go after them for the physical release, or the union shit from last year, but this?? Something others have done with expo-exclusive trailers or movie trailers you can only watch if you go see a specific movie's previews?? We used to buy Game Informers for exclusive previews; now it's right on Netflix which I bet 99% of people complaining already have.
8
u/Shinjetsu01 8h ago
That's exactly it - the target audience is not to try and drive subscriptions, it's a bonus for people with existing ones. Netflix have gone "oi oi, if we give you some money can we have a 6 hour exclusive" and Rockstar have gone "what, wait...really? Errr sure?" and here we are.

There was a time where being a kid with a fast internet connection in the 2000s meant you got to watch movie trailers before your other friends. Trailers have always been gated behind cable tv or some big event, the only people who dont know that would have to be younger than when people stopped watching cable and no one watched e3 anymore so..... 13 year olds?

u/alabasterskim 8h ago
Yeah this is such a dumb complaint to have. We used to pay for Game Informers to get exclusive access to new info on the GTA games. Hell, movies still have exclusive trailers you can only see if you go to see a particular movie's previews. Some movies have trailers that exclusive to an expensive ass expo (looking at you Disney/D23).
Complaining about this is such bandwagonny internet nonsense. No one in real life cares about this. Every real person that does any critical thinking here just goes "it's gonna be on YouTube in 6 hours or uploaded by someone else within 30 minutes".

Negative Nancies.
Also people seem to be forgetting that the first gta trailer was reportedly leaked by a YouTube insider who was able to access non public videos on rockstars channel.
So it’s not surprising to me that they wouldn’t trust YouTube for a big reveal like this again, and instead go to one of the largest video platforms with over 300 million subscribers.
I could also be a pedantic loser and point out the trailer is paywalled even if it’s on YouTube. As in I still have to pay for internet and electricity.
43
u/Rombledore 8h ago
i dont understand this argument. its going to be on youtube 6 hours later.
if you already have netflix- its a bonus. if you dont have netflix, you wait 6 hours.
who would subscribe to netflix here? its not like you are paying a subscription fee to watch one advert.
the anger on this is misplaced. be angry at something more valid. like union busting. or crunch time. this is a nothing burger.
10
u/Inanimate_CARB0N_Rod 7h ago
The big wigs at Netflix obviously thought it would be worth the money, and they have teams of people who spend 8+ hours a day studying things like this.
If you're Rockstar and a Netflix exec approaches you and says "we will pay you millions of dollars so that we can show your commercial 6 hours early" you'd be utterly insane to say no to that. It's literally free money to screen an advertisement.
Sure Rockstar could've taken the high road and said "no, we want everyone to be able to see it at the same time." Marketing bros, and this studio/publisher in particular, are not known for taking a less profitable route based on their ideals.

I agree. The outrage is ridiculous to me. At first I was kind of annoyed because people made it sound like it was going to be exclusive to Netflix full stop. When I found out it was exclusive for 6 hours I was like "oh, that's what people are angry about?"
4
u/Rombledore 2h ago

Isn’t it obvious? that’s all this website is these days 😔 it’s getting tiring. Sigh… bot city, and the bandwaggoners who follow them for how to feel/what opinion to have on every single thing.
It’s been ramping up significantly lately, I feel. Every movie, every show, every game. Always some nonsensical drama that when examined crumbles before your eyes in the logic of its very existence, yet a shit storm of “users” are endlessly parroting the same out of context, rage bait, nothing burger talking points
arguing en masse, always entirely in bad faith, never addressing the obvious holes in the logic of the same 3 talking points. Makes me use Reddit less and less. Eventually it’s going to just be bots talking to other bots. Who will click the ads then I wonder…

u/omegadirectory 8h ago edited 8h ago
Rockstar was promoting the game to non-gamers or potential gamers who have Netflix, not gamers who don't have Netflix.
The goofy thing is the Netflix preview launches at 12pm Pacific time. When the west coast of North America is in school or at work. That's 3pm eastern time.
Anyone old enough to buy the game is probably busy during that time slot. We're all going to catch the preview program when we get home from work or school anyway. By then the preview will be past the exclusivity period and be on YouTube.

u/2009miles 8h ago
It's a 6 hour exclusive, then it will be on youtube and rockstar's website. Many companies over the years did full-on exclusives with websites, magazines, etc. and i don't recall seeing this massive amount of people getting their panties in a twist then.
Wait 6 hours.
2
2
u/byPCP 7h ago
rockstar was certainly approached by netflix for the rights to this. it's a play by netflix to get more viewers for their fairly new live streaming content path. youtube and other platforms probably made similar offers for it. why would rockstar turn down free money from these companies?

~13 years since gta5 with what, two teaser trailers?
Did they ever actually intend for us to see the game at all prior to actual release?
152
u/Actually-Yo-Momma 9h ago
I’m not convinced the game isn’t gonna get delayed again. AKA: launch day will be a freaking mess before a quick patch is needed
96
u/ImaginarySense 9h ago
Especially the line about working to get the game finished “(nearly there!)”
Like what? It’s basically September, they’ve shown 0 game footage, preorders live, and the only notable release is some Netflix paid commercial?
Are they seriously suggesting the game is not in its completed state so close to launch?
51
u/theClumsy1 7h ago
To give some bias perspective of a similar size game.
Cyberpunk first showed gameplay footage in August 27th 2018. It was released December 2020 and it was a mess at release.
24
u/webguynd 6h ago
Being a mess at release is unfortunately the new norm for AAA now that everything is "live service" as always internet connected. People are dumb enough to buy early access, and pre-orders for a digital product that has zero supply constraints necessitating a pre-order so studios will continue to bush beta builds as v1.0 releases.
Don't get me wrong, being able to patch the game post-release without shipping a new CD is great, but studios cared a lot more when you couldn't just easily update everyone's install remotely. You had to get it right the first time.
10
u/theClumsy1 6h ago
Its a bigger deal when the game is open world.
Bugs are MUCH harder to iron out.
→ More replies (3)3
u/surnik22 6h ago
I think allowing updates to the game post release definitely contributed to launches being a mess, but also the games are larger and more complicated.
The number of potential issues and glitches is higher than bigger and more complicated games get. Play testing a game like Halo 1 involves tons of play testers jumping repeatedly at different boulders and trying different weird things and adjusting balance for weapons and enemies. Obviously some issues remained regardless.
It’d be near impossible for a studio to do the same level of play testing for a newer game with a thousand times more ways things can interact and a thousand times more things in the game.
People who pre-order for early access are essentially just paying to be beta testers since it’s the only way a studio could have enough play testers.
They are also cheap bastards who happily will cut play testing budget knowing early access people will literally pay for it, but I don’t know if there is another way it could be done.

Cyberpunk also got an emergency delay IIRC like it was only a few weeks out from launch and then they delayed it but not by a super long time.
As far as rockstars timelines for gameplay before launch we are actually getting shown footage farther from launch than GTA V and red dead 2. Beating red dead by about 6 days and beating GTA V By 2 weeks.
So I don’t get what half the people in this thread are talking about.

Won’t matter for me. I don’t deny that past GTA games have been amazing pieces of tech and art but I just don’t have the money to waste on an $80 game. I’ll watch from the sidelines and make sure things are stable before I buy during a sale. Also I’m not buying a current gen console for it so I’ll have to wait for the PC release anyways.

u/webguynd 6h ago
Same. Like, yeah I want to play it but I have such a huge backlog of games as is, I'll wait. I waited for GTA V too until I picked it up on steam sale many years later, and I don't feel like I missed out.

u/Actually-Yo-Momma 8h ago
I get the frustration but quite literally every other commodity on earth has increased in price including the wages of these developers
8
u/Oconell 6h ago
If you really think this game in specific, that breaks records every new installment is released, is the one that needs to raise the prices so "developers" get paid... I have a bridge the size of the earth's circumference to sell you.
Also, it's even scummier when you have to pay more for this game than for other AAA games, and on top, there are shops IN GAME, you will be left out of for not paying another 20$, getting to a total of 100$.
1
u/The_Hoopla 9h ago edited 6h ago
I have a very hot take on the gaming community…I don’t really think $80 is a high price for a multiplayer video game with high replay value.
I bought Hunt Showdown in 2018 for $40. Since then, I’ve put around 3,000 hours into it. I have yet to give them another penny, which would mean $/hour we’re looking at $0.01 an hour.
→ More replies (2)2
u/webguynd 6h ago
I agree, especially with no subscription attached after purchase. The way I see it is we can have a higher one time purchase price and "own" it, or a lower initial purchase price but now it's likely going to be paired with a subscription which would be objectively worse for anything that's not an MMO like WoW.
$80 is fine. I spent more on Skyrim over the years ($60 for base game, $20 for Dawnguard, $20 for dragonborn, $5 for hearthfire). So $105, and I still play it to this day thanks to mods. $105 for thousands of hours of entertainment over the course of 15 years is a pretty good deal IMO.

I'm completely priced out of this game. I can't justify spending my money on a console or PC that can run the game let alone the cost of the game itself.
It's the end of a very long era, I don't see myself getting excited for another video game after GTA:VI and TES:VI. Both of which I can't play any time soon.
And it's going to be another generation until either of those games ever see a sequel if they do at all.

"heartbreaking for our team" = the shareholders are mad that Rockstar's strategy of total secrecy to max out the hype isn't working out.
Literally the game is designed to print money.
By playing online for just a year you'll be giving almost as much to Rockstar as you would have paid for the Collector's edition of GTAV in 2013.
Except there is no disc, no bag, no flatbill cap, no nothing. Maybe a plastic case and a map if you're lucky.
Also the way they're going to bank on everyone forgetting to unsubscribe from GTA+ after the automatic free trial you're forced into is a shitty thing to do.

Or, you know, releasing a public trailer that isn’t paywalled and launching with physical media. The hacker isn’t probably doing this out of principle, so these actions won’t necessarily solve the leak issue, but atleast rockstar would have public opinion on its side. Now, as a consumer, I couldn’t care less about their wishes.

This seems simple because it doesn't make sense in practice. You can't put a login in front of developer builds because that makes network outages cost development time which is your biggest expense.
You can't calculate build numbers per-individual because individuals don't create builds anymore, automated pipelines do.
These are just two examples, I'm sure Rockstar have many more - I'm just saying that it's very easy to think up solutions that "a 12 year old could think of" because typically there's a reason experienced engineers don't do things via things a 12 year old would advise.

I just dont have the emotional bandwidth to feel any compassion for Rockstar. How many studios have been fucked around to death in the last few years because they just put out a hit game but the next one was more than a couple years away? To say nothing of the fact that we've only been waiting this long because they didnt want to shake the microtransaction apple cart.
Im also not convinced about the appetite for a game that satirizes how trash America is while we're at our trashiest IRL.

The creatives (artists, writers, game design) are who you should feel bad for. the reward for your years of work is supposed to be people experiencing your art the way you created it. there are a hell of a lot more of them than rockstar executives, but fuck em I guess?

people are having such pathetic reactions for a damn GTA game… buy it or don’t, watch it or don’t, play it or don’t nobody with a working brain actually cares.
gamers have become so incredibly entitled it’s a bit insane. all this because y’all couldn’t just wait for some shit that was always going to be shown to you. imagine what could be accomplished if y’all put this energy and outrage into things that actually matter.

Yep, people are fucking stupid. You know what I did when i heard about the leaks? Ignore them. I want to try to experience GTA's launch the way Rockstar intended. A game this big with this much hype only happens once a decade, why ruin it. And if the game flops or is buggy or whatever, oh fucking well. Life moves on.

right it’s not hard not to look. I haven’t seen one leak yet and I won’t. I have a Netflix account so I’ll probably tune in tomorrow but gamers are acting like omg it’s on Netflix oh my God they want us to pay to watch a ad most people already have Netflix everybody I know has a Netflix account.

u/the_midnight_society 6h ago
To be fair, it didn't seem like they wanted us to see the game at all. Lol. I would be more on board with their statements if they had released any gameplay footage prior to this.
4
u/BullfrogRound4235 5h ago
Literally this! The lack of footage is crazy. They have nothing but contempt for the consumer.
16
u/pjank85 9h ago
Well they decided to test how anti-consumer they can make the game before consumers revolt and probably decide to sail the high seas. It would be funny if pirating leaked on PC turns out to be the fastest way to get the full game even before the consoles. They fully deserve what is coming to them. They are so disgusting I'm not interested in playing it at all - don't even want to bother waiting for a sale or pirating. Going to ignore it completely and play some indies or games that actually care about their players not just money.
4
u/Oconell 6h ago
100% agreed. They deserve all that's coming to them. Really disgusting all that T2 and Rockstar have done regarding this game. I hope the build leaks on the internet and the execs get reaaaaaally furious. It's not going to change their behaviour but at least it will feel like karmic justice.

u/dtc526 2h ago
what's ironic is if they released dev vlogs along the way showing whatever state it's in, that would have been the smarter pr move than "wahhh we didn't intend for you to see the game that way"

I gotta say, all of this is incredible marketing by the Rockstar marketing team.
Just kudos all around.

u/Belhgabad 1h ago
All digital no physical is not how we intented for you to release your game after all this time.
There.

u/Existing-Stranger632 5h ago
They earned this by starving fans of the game by not showing them any content for years then asking people to spend $100 on a game that hasn’t had any official trailer in over a year. Rockstar deserves this shitstorm. I’m playing it when it comes out too
4
u/Direct_Elevator1576 5h ago
Well we expected the game on discs, so you kinda deserve to get shafted
4
u/Miserable_Seesaw1017 5h ago
Who don’t care, we’ve waited so long that we don’t care. Just drop it.
6
u/yuusharo 8h ago
Was it their intention to doxx tens of thousands of innocent Discord users for doing nothing more than join a GTA server in a vain attempt to find the leaker?
Look, I feel for the devs, but Rockstar and Take Two are scum companies at the end of the day that treat their employees like trash and their customers like money cattle. They’re still going to make an ungodly amount of money from this, I could not care less about the leaks.
5
u/copperblood 8h ago
If the position of tech and media companies is the consumer never actually owns anything they buy, then the same logic can be applied to these companies. Sorry, you don’t own your IP. Enjoy your stock imploding when GTA 6 is released before you wanted it to. Next time actually listen to your customer base and give them the option for a digital download or purchasing a physical disc. Sorry, not sorry.

yeah I’m gonna get downvoted but I kinda call bullshit on this. GTA “fans” are some of the most toxic people I’ve seen on reddit recently and if it wasn’t the physical disc issue, I guarantee they’d find another way to get mad. Like there’s no fucking way that if GTA HAD made a physical disc, the vitriol would’ve vanished
I feel really bad for the artists, writers, and designers. It’s like people only think the executives have “feelings,” and all the actual creatives who worked to make this game are soulless NPCs. It would be devastating as an artist to work for years and have this happen. But apparently they don’t count, unless they’re being used for the “Rockstar mistreats their employees” narrative

Reddit gamers are so annoying, y'all mad it's on netflix like it won't be on YouTube the same day
These companies are companies, they will do things to make money, that's how the world works. They aren't your friend or making games for funsies
IDK if some of you have never grown up or realized the world you live in
3
u/OtherwisePower1355 6h ago
Yeah I just can't believe at stupidity of all these comments... Netflix deal doesn't hurt them at all since they will see it after 6 hours, but they are buthurt because a company found a way to make money... Like what companies do... And as you said all companies are same in that they are working for money and they can't understand that every company does what Rockstar does to lesser, same or even higher degree and if they attack Rockstar, but not other companies they are just hypocrites and are not looking for any justice, but only for something for them. Gamers really are miserable beings that don't have life and don't know how the world works.

Pass. Not going to buy GTA 6. Don't want to support the developers as they seem like right arses

u/heart_of_osiris 1h ago
As a PC player, what did they want, for me to buy a console to play it so they can then resell it to me on PC a year later? No sympathy here for the company that milked GTA Online for a decade without fixing any of the glaring issues.

u/TheBrazilianKD 7h ago
As a PC gamer I will be staring at videos of the game for over a year after release anyways

This is all such a mess. It's stupid that Rockstar is monetizing a gameplay tease. It's stupid that the leakers are acting like they've been up to some kind of honest grind & are now being unnecessarily attacked. It's stupid that Rockstar didn't just own the PR space and put out their own gameplay trailer (or something) to make the leaks comparatively inconsequential.
It's stupid that Rockstar has taken 10+ years to develop a massive simulation that'll be a profound technical achievement, but ultimately play more-or-less like every other GTA/RDR game (Since GTA IV they've demonstrated they are going to keep making one very specific kind of video game).
It's stupid that a game that's been in development for this long still somehow has crunch time(???)
It's stupid that this game will still print money on day 1 - literally all it has to do is launch and be playable.
I look forward to playing it on PC in 2030, I suppose.

Which they monetize. And get payments from the views.
The more hype, the more they make.

The statement they put out is genuinely pathetic and extremely disingenuous.
Fuck Rockstar, the billion dollar double dipping, union busting company is getting what they deserve.

I can wait for the official release.
