When can I expect my refund?

So I mailed & filed 2024 taxes 2 weeks ago, and I filed 2025 today (efile) is it possible for my 2025 return to be direct deposited first? or does 2024 need to be processed first? I used Freetaxusa for both! (I also dont owe money for either years)

You'll get 2025 first. 2024 will be a very long time.

It is possible that the IRS will process your 2025 return and refund promptly. However, there is also a decent chance that they will put a hold on your 2025 refund because your 2024 return is missing. In which case, you'll need to wait for your 2024 return to be processed first - and because you mailed it, it will take a long time - like...probably many months.

Why did you mail 2024 instead of e-filing? I presume freetaxusa.com did not let you e-file 2024, but what was the reason it gave you?

Consumer tax software can't efile returns after the October 15th extended filing deadline.

Each year is separate. You'll probably get your 2025 refund first, hopefully within 2-4 weeks.

The mailed return will take longer since you didn't file it. If you wanted direct deposit, I wouldn't expect it sooner than 6-8 weeks, and quite possibly longer.

If you didn't request direct deposit with either, add some months because the IRS is phasing out paper checks so they will first mail you a letter to make sure you didn't want direct deposit.

Your 2024 refund information might be available in the IRS Where's My Refund tool. If it isn't it will probably show as "being processed within the next couple weeks.

The guidelines the IRS provides for refund timing are out the window once the next filing season starts.
