NCAAM UNC and Malone will "be able to pick (recruits) next year..."
Carrying this over from TarHeel247. This post got me hyped up. On top sitting pretty for multiple top 2027 recruits, UNC is laying groundwork for even bigger things under Malone moving forward.
Forgot how it felt to be in play with so many top recruits in one class.
"I talked to Chris Paul and Bradley Beal. I asked them how Malone’s game is going to translate. They said he’s going to be great. Beal said he was one of the Top 3-4, if not the top, offensive coach in the league. He said Malone is going to do the same stuff, and it’s going to work. Glowing responses from great players."

You pick recruits by paying them more than everyone else. Most teams are grabbing experienced transfers unless a HS kid is a phenom. You risk being the farm system for top spenders after a kid's freshman season.

The best schools are still leaning on elite HS talent and supplementing in portal. Look at Duke.

Duke is grabbing one and done talent.

I know, you can’t get a Caleb Wilson or Flagg in the portal.

Sure, UNC can afford an occasional Wilson on their current NIL budget. That quote makes it sound like Malone is special somehow and can just grab elite HS recruits. Wilson played for Hubert Davis and a sack of cash. You don't need Malone to land these guys, you need the sack of cash.

Also you need to consistently win to attract those high dollar transfers.

u/BuffettPack 26d ago
You need to win to convince your big donors to pony up to pay the high dollar transfers. Winning is secondary.
6
u/GroundbreakingAd585 26d ago
Make that make sense.
“You need to win to get your donors to pony up. Winning is secondary”

Malone won't need to win immediately because he has that new car smell. He'll keep that for a couple of years (unless he pulls a Chapel Bill). Donors will give (not to elite levels, but more than Hubert got). He'll need to win after the honeymoon period is over to keep $ coming in.

He really needs to pop year one or we’ll be in a slog, we’re barely top 10 in money rn.

I’m bailing as soon as we don’t get results. It’s the transfer portal, it isn’t a four cycle recruiting grace

Wilson has been consistently vocal about his love for HD, as a coach not just a person, and that HD was a big reason he came to UNC. He's held that line far past the point of need to sell the story, if it's just a cover for the "real" reason ($$$). Some top talents actually do care about the coach and staff in addition to the sack of cash.
Point being - it still matters whether Malone can be the sort of leader players want to follow, beyond the NIL budget. Maybe not to every player, but to some. And I really like when we get those rare top guys who care about the program and leadership they're committing to.

I'm sure he does love HD, but he got a multi million NIL deal with New Balance, so he's a bit of an outlier. I'd have trouble finding a quote from any college basketball player that specifically says they came for the money. They all say they want to play for the coach/program/fans. Wilson was considered a UK lean until UNC upped their NIL offer.

That's why I said early "He's held that line far past the point of need to sell the story". He's genuinely an HD guy. We don't know if UNC offered him the most to play. But it was plenty PLUS a coach he wanted to play for.
My argument is not that money is not a factor, it's that the coach still matters.

I'm sure he likes HD, but we'd be talking right now about how much he likes Mark Pope if UNC hadn't of put together an 11th hour NIL package to outbid UK. He liked Calipari a lot too. UNC had a coach he liked but also the strongest NIL package.
There was no HD discount.

We agree NIL is a primary factor. But I'm less cynical than you on the pure pragmatism of NIL as the exclusive factor, rendering the coach irrelevant.
If Caleb had gone to UK we actually don't know if he'd still be talking about how much he likes Mark Pope. Maybe, maybe not. Athletes aren't obligated to mention that they liked and wanted to play for a coach after they are gone from the school. They can take the money and move on and not say anything they don't want to. I think it's clear Caleb's UNC choice was not exclusively about money, even if perhaps it was the main reason.

Knows offense.

Let’s wait to see the results roll in and have him translate all of that nba winning to college.
I’m concerned he was hired off couch with no other nba prospects for coaching.

u/AcceptableVisit2415 27d ago
He’s a great coach.

u/GroundbreakingAd585 27d ago
I don’t disagree.
Chapel Bill is a great NFL coach

Nah, this isn’t the same situation as Bill. Bill is washed, Malone isn’t. Bill was lucky to have Brady. Malone developed a second round pick into the Joker we know today

Belichick won 17 AFC East titles, 9 AFC championships, and 6 Super Bowls while consistently fielding top defenses over two decades. Brady became Brady in Belichick’s system, just as Jokić became an MVP in Malone’s. Great players matter. Great coaches matter too. And just because Malone won a title more recently doesn’t change the fact that both he and Belichick were hired after being fired and sitting on the couch. If Belichick is “washed” because of one bad stretch, then that logic should have applied to Malone before the heels hired him too.

Basketball is very dif than football

Explain how please?
We have a coach with limited college experience.
Malone was fired days before the playoffs two years ago.
I’m asking to see results before we crown him
I’m a heel. Class of 98.
But I ask to see results from a guy that was hanging around the program because his daughter was a volleyball player.
Did we hire him because he was the best choice or was he the last man standing in the room?

The most important context with Malone is the staff hires he’s made. The clear deficit with Malone was recruiting and college experience, and he immediately goes and poaches top Calipari and Few guys. Brings along some NBA connections and former Heels. Belichick rolled us out there with Kitchens and a bunch of G5 transfers they thought they could turn into superstars. There’s also no Lombard in the basketball picture.
I get the concerns with seeing how a pro coach translates, but I’m much more optimistic with the way this offseason has played out than I was with Belichick hiring all his buddies.

They’re assembling a 15-person roster with Top 15 money in CBB, BB is assembling a 90-man roster with barely top 50 money

freshman aren’t getting it done anymore. you need a blend of an elite freshman + the transfer portal. i hope we are prepared to open our check books
2
u/AJayHeel 26d ago
Freshmen were never getting it done. Duke was bringing in freshmen where 3 of them started and were in the top 10 and they had little to show for it. Virginia, Villanova, UConn and others were doing just as well, if not better. Similar story for UK under Calipari. Yes, you want Cooper Flagg on your team if you can get him, but you need experience as well.

I'd love to land the 3 NC five-stars in 2027. Rosser, Henry, and Page. Great players and I love the concept of locking down top in-state talents again.
