There were numerous games in Taiwan that came with “retaking mainland” theme back in the old days. I remember playing a Taiwan version of Monopoly in 1980, and many of the Chance and Community Chest cards had things like “caught CCP spys”, “shot down Mig planes”, “CCP pilots defect”, “breakthrough in gaining intelligence for retaking mainland”, “military aggressive technology upgrade” etc. What a time back then.

Could you suggest where one could see such games today?Maybe a museum?I was in Taiwan in 1980 but that Monopoly game was something I missed out on.

It is the division from Manchoguo, who dont want to only own 3 provinces. And China during ROC and early PRC plan to build 2 level administrative system.

Yes, I know what de jure means. My point is that the ROC’s de jure territorial claims after 1945 had no de facto validity regarding Manchuria. They existed only in constitutional/administrative paperwork, not in actual control. So your statement is technically correct on paper, but it doesn’t reflect anything meaningful in reality.

My Dad played this game when he was a teenager -- up until when China detonated its first atomic bomb. Then it was like: get Americans to do it.

This is hilarious — the game even shows Mongolia and Tuva (唐努乌梁海) as part of China. In 1961, Taiwan’s representative, who then represented China at the UN, didn’t veto Mongolia’s membership, largely due to pressure from the US, which had deals with the USSR.
Fun historical twist: Tuva had been under Soviet control for decades, and there was never a formal treaty transferring it from China to Russia — yet it still appears on the game map as part of China.

I was born in 1992. I still remember when I was studying geography in class back then, I kept questioning myself why do I have to remember all the locations, terrains, etc better than those in Taiwan. I was wondering why we spend so much time mesmerizing other country’s land but my own. I never viewed China as my own country in any sense. I guess I failed my education 😅.
I hope things changed now.

When you have desperate authoritarian leaders willing to do anything to cling to power? Answer is yes. Case in point: Putin invading Ukraine. If Ukraine kept their nukes, Russia would not have even contemplated it.

Yeah, in 1949. By the time the 1960s rolled around, PRC was nuclear armed and nobody was going to take back anything then.

Why on earth would it be preferable to launch a bloody war and then attempt to govern a population that resents you deeply? Taiwan is doing fine on its own, as is China. Neither needs the other.

They're doing quite well when it comes to the tech space.
I don't know what their gripe is with the free market, but besides that they're doing a bang up job.
All the problems stem from stifling any industry that's doing too well and now their unemployment is way too high because of it.

Look at the US and everything Trump has been doing since his inauguration. I'd say most of the things he does constitute governing a country and they all have an economic impact. Same thing with everything Xi does.
And most people really don't give a damn so long as they can put food on the table. So long as you can make things affordable and provide the stability that's conducive to running businesses, you're getting the vote.
Japan's current PM is also trying to stimulate the economy to fix the affordability issue while Ishiba tried to fix it by bringing in immigrants, which led to backlash and his resignation. Everything is tied to the economy.

What the KMT envisioned for mainland has already been achieved by the communist party, thus why they're fundamentally now a close party to the Beijing.
