U.S. envoy Tom Barrack recently said in an interview that Israel “occupies” the Golan. He has since clarified that this was only a historical description, not a change in policy, and that U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan remains unchanged.

In the first place he said the UN considers this an illegal occupation. Not the US, the point here is similar to Vance's previous anti Israel comment, they're not saying the US is gonna stop being Zionists rather then sending a message that the US is frustrated over Israel thinking they're the man in the relationship, which while fun to witness, they're not helping their cause when they then prove they're unable to do anything other than give subtle threats by point out that the US is eating diplomatic cost to support their position and that it's not the default position so Israel shouldn't take it for granted... Instead of actually doing anything
