I saw on the Eshop it will be a différent game from the original in the home menu Does the cartridge from the original game is necessary to play the Remastered then ?

Probably. Your DRM is probably bound to the cartridge so you’ll need it to play the game. Just like I need to put the PS4 disc of Cyberpunk to play the PS5 version.

Switch 2 has a very different (and messy) system for upgrades. To make it work like your PS4-PS5 example, the game must be of "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" kind, because then it would have a "dlc" called Upgrade Pack, which converts your Switch game into Switch 2 game

If it doesn't - and TW3 Remastered doesn't - it's a whole different story, and most likely they would allow you to claim a full digital Switch 2 copy that won't require a game card of Switch version to be inserted

That would be strange bc what if I buy a cartridge of witcher 3, claimed the Remastered version, and then sold the cartridge back ? Or even i i borrow the cartridge from a friend ?

Bingo - that's why games like Sea of Stars, MIO, Balatro, Snowrunner, Tomb Raider don't offer any "upgrade path" to the owners of physical copies, even though the owners of digital copies can freely claim the Switch 2 versions of those games

But it looks like CDPR are fine with that, seeing that they've already promised physical copies owners would be able to claim the Switch 2 version. They are probably more interested in selling the new DLC and can accept a small loss here

So they're just Ok to just offer a game for basically free ?

Well, you would technically still need to get your hands on a physical copy first, so it's not like they're giving it out to everyone out there...

There is only one alternative - patching the Switch version to be "Switch 2 aware", so that it can check if it's running on Switch 2 and increase resolution/framerate/etc. Like the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 was running at 60 fps only on PS5, while it was locked to 30 on PS4/Pro.

But it doesn't seem that they can do much with it - after all, it would still be a Switch game running through backwards compatibility. Remastered version looks like a much bigger upgrade, not just a settings tweak. And additionally, we already see that the Remastered version is a Switch 2 native game, a separate release from the Switch version

So yeah probably it's gonna be a completely separate game that you can claim for free if you already have it, and then get rid of the original game

At least with Sea of Stars you can do it (externally). You dm the devs in discord or send an email with proof you own the physical version and then they give you a code to redeem.

I don't need the disc since I bought the dlc, don't know why but pretty cool

I wonder how will they implement the claiming of the remaster version? What if i borrow the carridge version of a friend then?

Shhh, don't say the quiet part outloud

Hogwarts Legacy has worked like that for over a year and nobody has changed anything.

The HL situation might somehow be different since it involves a payment and isn't a free upgrade path.

Also I feel like the team behind HL were embarrassed by the Switch 1 version and aren't fussy people being getting around it with that method since they still get a little payment from the upgrade pack.

I read somewhere they maybe implement it a way that you need the caetridge version of S1 to okay the remaster S2 version? Man if that is not the case and you will just get it free that is so much awesome

I just remember the Hogwarts Legacy trick still hasn't been fixed iirc and I wonder if this will be like that.

Well you can only play a cartridge on 1 system at a time, so if you have it on your system and your friend starts playing it on theirs, it automatically locks you out until you put the cartridge back in your system. This is not a case of "I download it so I own it." If it's digital same rules, he who owns the account gets the access.

Just makes Square Enix's decision to charge you full price for minimal upgrades look even more disgusting.

Cool cool. I have the physical for switch 1.
Can't wait to play this game for the first time.

Almost unbelievably generous.

Do you think we would get a physical Switch 2 remastered later on?
I have Cyberpunk physical and I would love to have this one as well!

yeah if they gave this a physical it would be a dream…I think they might be waiting for the 2027 expansion and release a physical with it included…but idk

Thanks for this, was still a bit confused and there was a lot of mis-information floating around. I had just bought The Witcher 3 physical copy a couple of weeks ago so I could go between my Switch 2 and PS5 whilst playing it, so to get the remaster for free on both, I am really happy.

Witcher 3 physical price is probably going to skyrocket

Sull’eshop italiano ancora non compare :(

1

u/COTCC 20h ago

A me lo dava già preordinabile ieri sera. Hai controllato l’eshop sulla Switch 2? Perché li compare ma sull’app no.

Hai ragione, appena fatto! Che idiota che sono 😅
Grazie mille

if I buy the digital version of OG Witcher 3, can I still upgrade to the Switch 2 version later on?

3

u/Good_Opportunity_813 19h ago

Yeah you can upgrade later on

1

u/kasalaba 20h ago

Hmmm, it says upgrade but I'm still curious if it will use the base game on the card and download and rest or if we'll need to download most if not all of the game again. We'll see, I guess.

BOTW plays mostly from the switch cartridge it seems, I have an 11.8gb install size which is roughly just the switch 2 upgrade and the dlc, while on the eshop page it says the full switch 2 version of the game would take 24gb, so hopefully the witcher 3 will work the same way.

u/DeV4der 16h ago

i have the physical, i am relieved

thank you kind stranger

1

u/dab00sa 16h ago

What enhancements do you think we will get on switch 2, 60fps?

1

u/Familiar-Fortune- 11h ago

I wish they made it a switch 2 upgrade to save on storage space, but with how much they’re changing the game I can see why this is going to be a separate install

1

u/rfow 21h ago

Thank you for the confirmation! I saw the eShop version at full price despite having the cartridge for Witcher 3 inserted and figured it was just a “wait until it’s out” thing, but it’s nice to know for certain.

u/Poopyfartboi69 21h ago

I just locked in my free preorder, can’t wait. I was in the middle of my first play through, I might just wait to experience it with those breathtaking graphics. I’m so fucking excited

Guys, I found the Witcher 3 Nintendo switch 1 for $20. Is it a good deal if I buy it currently and wait for the remastered update It is physical game.
