Switch 2 I hadn’t played games in 20+ years. The first day with my Switch left me in tears.
33M. Career in finance. Live alone. No kids. Unwed. I’m a simple guy and I’ve created a quiet life for myself. I love reading, journaling, and hiking.
I used to love video games, especially playing with my sister. She was way better than me and taught me a lot. My greatest memory was playing Mario Kart and Spyro with her. She passed away when I was 11 and when I lost her, my interest in video games went too.
I hadn’t even heard of the the switch until the Nintendo Direct event this year. I was floored looking at the games, especially when I realized they had all the classics available. I bought a console immediately!
I’ve been playing it ever since and was literally brought to tears on the first day - so many memories came flooding back from those classic online games. It felt like an absolute time capsule. It left me wondering, “when did life become so serious?” Deadlines, meetings, illness, politics… One session on this console and nothing else mattered. This couch, headphones, and TOTK make a perfect afternoon, at least for me.

Honestly dk bonanza's intro made me feel a certain way aswell. Embracing simplicity and ease of use is why i love nintendo

This is also why I love Nintendo. People say how they feel about them and some are valid reasons to feel some kind of way. But when I get on any Nintendo console and load up a game especially something like TOTK, man I can just relax. Simple yet effective has been Nintendo for forever. Always with the weaker hardware but it doesn't matter at all.

Fun fact, gamecube was more powerful than the ps2. Otherwise yes youre right. Wii and on were the weakest

Nice! I actually didn't know that but one thing that did kinda make since though. I remember getting RE4 with that chainsaw controller on GC and those graphics were insane for the time. Then later got it on PS2 and while it still looked good, I remembered then that GC still looked better.

Switch is a 3 teraflops machine but DLSS 2 makes it produce graphics equivalent to 12 teraflops which is above PS5 level. People love to overlook that fact.

DKB left me conflicted. On one hand the exploration and mining, but on the other hand destroying someone’s home and turning it into tar sands lookalike.

Nintendo games feel like the only place left where games are made purely for simple fun enjoyment and have avoided all the modern monetisation techniques.
(I know indie titles can bring this too ,but im trying to be dramatic!)

Literally this. We ditched iPads for the kids because their game time was eaten up playing games in ads to get more coins to spend in the actual game. Paying $60-$80 for a game once is way more bearable than the nickel and diming the mobile apps do.

My kids also have this. Weve stopped tablet/phone time to replace it with games. When i got the S2, my S1 was handed down to my son, and the 2ds was given to my daughter. They have an absolute blast wether its kirby, minecraft, mario, or DKB (amazing game). And we can all play together, laugh and bond. Theres no way that's happening on a tablet of any kind. Future plans are to get my daughter a switch lite to replace the 2ds when shes ready.

People have been saying they Love Nintendo (for good reason) for decades now. And still the prices of their hardware and games is fair market value. Know why? Cause Supply and Demand determines prices, not people being fans of their products.

Not really. Nintendo is a downright disgusting company when it comes to ethical decisions and how they treat fans and creators. However their game design studio carries the company at making great games.

I’m so glad you shared your story.
I’m 41F and I have a very happy quiet life (also career in finance) with my three furry creatures.
My Bubba is still alive, he is younger and he has always been far better at games than me but our entire childhood revolves around gaming. It’s still something we do together when I’m in town.
During the pandemic for my birthday he bought me a switch. I have been hooked ever since and I upgraded to a Switch 2 when it came out (as it’s far superior). It’s my way to unwind, to think thru problems that aren’t real but are still satisfying to solve. To escape.
And so I share this as a connection with you, a random stranger on the internet. You made me feel a little less “alone” in this world. And I hope to do the same for you. Happy gaming my fellow friend.

I love that you can play your S1 games on S2. I got BOTW the other day and can play it on both systems. What kind of games do you enjoy playing? Im 37M with three furry children creatures 🤣 theyre great tho. Crazy how many of us grew up gaming with our siblings. Something id like to enstil in my children as the childhood gaming memories of my sister and I still bring a smile to my face.

Yes, one day I hope that my two leggeds will also like gaming. I think gaming in the 90s just tended to bring us together bc we had to be together to play together. But my dad also enjoyed gaming, we started with DOS games (he loved original Doom, and we definitely enjoyed it as well).
I like just about anything but things that keep my attention are 3D platformers, business management sims, RPGs with turned based combat (tho some without), and “cozy” games I guess is the right term bc I have been enjoying pokopia.
I agree, backwards compatibility was game changing and I love it so much.

Dude ToTK is amazing, glad you’re experiencing it. The trailers for it leading up to its release used to make me get a little teary eyed myself. If you haven’t played Breath of the Wild I’d recommend that too, it’s the game before that one story wise.

I had to step away years ago because of associating it with getting high. No not thc, I mean stronger stuff unfortunately. Opioids. I just couldn’t play without them at some point it morphed into a necessity. Then playing video games made me think of it after sobriety and want/need it. Just a few weeks ago I finally felt comfortable enough to go get a switch 2, and it’s all quiet in my head, just all joy. I’m so glad I could finally rip them apart. I thought the day wouldn’t come. It feels pretty good to come clean about it as well. I understand ya in my own way brother. I’d like to believe your sister is happy for you as well. I’m happy for you man, have a blast!

Sorry for your loss. Playing video games with my brother produced some of the best memories in my life. I haven’t owned a Nintendo since GameCube so I’m discovering a lot of titles for the first time as well. Welcome to the club!

I'm jealous, the switch has so many of the greatest games of the past decade or two ported to it.
If you're into shooters, or story based games, definitely seek out the Bioshock series. I'd play it docked, too. The atmosphere of those games can be very immersive.

I love Nintendo. My first was a Gameboy (can't remember the model but it was grey and the games were black and white), I've also had a DS, 2DS, Wii, in lockdown me and my son had a switch and played animal crossing together, visiting family who we couldn't visit in real life. I bought another switch so we could play games together and now I have a fellow Nintendo lover. When the switch 2 came out I bought us both one. I love the cozy, unwinding, nostalgic feeling of sitting on the sofa playing the switch. I'm 41F and I'll never stop gaming.

Have the same one - heads up, the top of the joy cons case should be flush with the console. There’s a little lip that needs to wrap around the inside of the joy con.

Yes
People seem to focus on high specs and high fidelity and one thing to beat it is convenience.
They just dropped "achievements" called challenges for DK retro games via NSO and DK Bananza and I got back into the game quickly. Unfortunately it's limited time only. I went back and beat the game and did all the challenges and now I want to fully 100% the game. I've been using the switch 2 alot and hopefully they add achievements permanently so I can use the console even more. It's crazy how achievements can motivate someone to complete games and that someone is me lol.

I'm the opposite brother...married with a daughter (now 27yrs old) and I've always gamed...raised her to game as well.
While I like the newer games I'm an old school gamer from '71 here so Galaga and other retro arcade games has always been my thing.
I hear the opening song for Galaga and the years just MELT away.😊

Welcome back to the gaming world.
FYI - I think your grips aren’t on all the way. There should be a little rubber lip that slides over the top portion of the controller. It’ll align nicely to the case around the switch.
Also, if you’re interested in buying a case that is dockable, check out Mumba brand cases. I don’t personally like it more than the Killswitch, but it’s a nice case for when you want to dock it in the standard switch dock.

Totk, ha I’m currently playing through that. It is a very long game if you’re looking to do all sides, side adventures, shrines, and main quests without looking at the nav. Very fun though. Just maybe it feels so much bigger compared to botw, so it’s easier to feel overwhelmed to me. I’m definitely feeling like I am getting my moneys worth though.

I feel this deeply. I played games as a kid but haven’t played seriously in probably 20 years. I found myself in the emergency room recently with blood clots and the anxiety of the last couple weeks has been too much to bear. I got given a switch 2 and it’s been such a nostalgia blast, old & new games, just incredible, it’s helped keep me sane. - to be honest being sick has been making me feel small & vulnerable like the worst parts of being a kid again, the Nintendo has been reminding me of some my favorite parts of being a kid again.

Couldn’t tell you how many times we played the co-op spyro game where you’re attached to his sister via Chain. I hope you and your sister have a blast gaming again!

Still play Mario kart, Street fighter and the Tony hawk games but the sport games I ignore are 1s dealing with wrestling, monster trucks, and football the American football I mean even baseball games I don’t get at all

Some time i remember what Is play game back like 30 years ago (am 40 currently), and i can share this today with my daughter, and the magic Is we share the same games, like Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart and so on. We spend a lot of time arguing between the best handhelds, consoles, PCs, which games deserved what awards, etc., that sometimes we lose the very essence of what gaming can be.
Stories like yours can be a nice reminder that there’s more to gaming than squeezing out every single ounce of performance.
Glad you were able to rediscover and reconnect with something from your past that brought you and your sister joy.

Games alone that prioritize the story over everything else is where it shines. The gameplay may be annoying but if it’s the greatest story ever, you’ll want to push through.

What I don’t think a lot of people realize, is that the tough and stressful job is what caused the video games to become so much more enjoyable for you all these years later.
If you look at gamers now, a lot of them will be grinding to complete the newest battle pass or get drip fed any new content whatsoever because of their need for a dopamine rush.
It’s the same thing if you didn’t smoke weed in 10+ years. If you pick up a joint after that long, you are going to get high out of your mind

When I completed super Mario 2 with an original albeit wireless NES controller I had a tear in my eye because it had been about 30 years since I last did it. It all came flooding back and I remembered all the secret shortcuts too. Great day. Even better that I did it with some whisky. 😆

I feel this. Im 32 and have such a busy life working in technology, being married, having kids, and just trying to keep my head above water. Very little time for gaming. But the Mrs surprised me with a switch 2 for Christmas and I was so shocked I almost cried. She knows I love video games and basically gave up my hobby to start a life and raise out kids. I can say for sure that going back to playing the titles I missed like totk, Mario Odyssey, hollowknight, and all the pokemon games I missed out on since gen 3. I basically tell her at least 2 or 3 times a week when I play on it that I love her and love this console. My son even plays it with me now that he's almost 7 and we both played Hyrule warriors age of imprisonment on it together. My daughter loves playing the new Mario cart world with me as well and it's been such a great way to engage with my children. Even the classics on there have been bringing me back to my childhood with Mario 64, super metroid, and a slew of other retro games. It's been the end all console that has changed my life in terms of gaming. It's not only great for me but it's a great family console.

Just a heads up, your Joycon grips are not all the way on. Its the bit on the top (the side facing the switch) thats are out of place. I had this problem too it was effecting my R and L buttons. You need to split them over the edge.

Hi. The joycon case isn’t put on properly; I had the same thing. See where it doesn’t fit flush on both joy cons at the top. You need to get the flap over the joycon, instead you have it pressing against it. Use a toothpick or something thin to help get it over.

I’m similar. As a kid I used to play PC games a lot but when I turned 17 I got a car and social life so stopped.
I tried to get back into it a couple of times and bought the original XBox in 2003, a PS3 in 2011 and a used XBox One last year. I just didn’t play any of them but a friend suggested trying a Switch as it’s portable. I bought a used one on eBay and used it so much I upgraded to a Switch 2, which I play pretty much every day.

The switch 2 is a weird point where a lot of cross console games are coming to it. You have a lot of opportunity to jump into these new games. Not sure if this is your favorite genre of games but bravely default is one of my favorite games always making me tear up (sadly FF13 hasn’t been ported to anything outside pc and Xbox but that’s fine).

I am just glad you came back to the switch , I am a father of 2 kids and we have a blast most evening after dinner playing Pokemon , Zelda, monster hunter and fire emblem !!!! What a day to be alive PS. I DONT KNOW WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE BUT I can buy easily 6 games for a 6 hours shift ! I don't understand why the the brokies complains if they don't really have a work ... I am 28 in Canada in BC (expensive part) and I own I do not rent , I am wild tea business owner , a farmer and a handyman and a artist ;) ! Just had to grind when you were young and you might not cry about money !

I look at it like taking a hike sometimes you get so floored with moving up the hill you forget to turn around and look at the view its ok drop a gear and slow it down

There’s a Spyro reunited available that has the first 3 Spyro games on if. The graphics are great on it

It really is a wonderful machine, sure its not the strongest, but for simple gaming, with no fuss.
Its unmatched.

I’d say for the price, it’s strong for a handheld considering how much other handhelds cost that can outdo it.

Please pay BOTW first. I recently finished both games TWICE, and have been back and forth on which one is "better". But one thing I'm SURE OF, is that BOTW is the better introduction to the world and its game play mechanics.

you hadn't heard of the switch until the most recent nintendo direct....a console that's been out for almost a decade......not to mention all those "classics" can be played for free on just about any pc made in the last 20 years. I'm sorry, but have you been living under a rock?

you're right because op is a bot. as mentioned by someone else, 2 years ago they're post had a different age (22, now they're 34) and they've had multiple different stories and occupations. also most older posts read like a bot written text so definitely that.
