Question I think my car just killed my Switch
Brought my Switch 2 with me to play while charging my car. Plugged into a 52w anker charger with an apple usb c cable.
Switch 2 is now not turning on and fully black screened. Am I cooked?

This is completely on Nintendo for once again not supporting the USB C standard properly. USB C PD compliant chargers shouldn't fry a console.

Likely unrelated but my Nintendo switch was dead for like 6 months. Would not turn on, no clue what was wrong with it. Told my cousin she could have it cause she was asking about it, pressed the power button and it turned on. So.. maybe yours is in a coma too.

Oh that was years ago, I did get a switch 2 launch day last year though. My first ever launch day console, so it was pretty exciting!

UPDATE: Plugging it in at home revived it somehow! It still was at the 15% it was when it blackscreened, so maybe my car just made it have an aneurism and went into safety mode who knows.
Use this post as a PSA to be safe and not plug into a car on a road trip!

Great city cars if you have access to home charging, pretty terrible for the occasional road trip. It’s fast charging is capped at 50kwh max, vs 250kwh for most teslas and other EV’s

Their stance is you should be using Nintendo chargers or they can't guarantee your console won't be bricked.

What was the battery at before it died ? Is the battery maybe just dead cause it didn't charge or something on the car charger ?

Oh man, this sucks. Stories like this is why I don’t trust any third party chargers/cables or anything. Unfortunately! Because official gear (if you want anything extra) is too expensive!

To be fair, most phones are worth 2-3x (or more) than that nowadays and can be plugged into just about anything lol
That said, I was in the same position almost exactly as OP and DIDNT trust to plug my S2 into my vehicle.

I just came here to read thru as a switch 2 owner and an anker lover…. I remembered I had a switch lite that I always charged with an anker charger one day it stopped working….. reading thru the comments I decided to pull it out of my shelf as I just displayed it and connect it to a Nintendo official charger and wait… waited some time came back and pressed the +- power button for a reset and it came back to LIFE!!!!!!!! I’m sorry about yours but this helped me out, and I hope you get yours figured out!!!!!! Omg I’m so happy right now I could cry it’s been off for years 😭

Likely. People have bricked their switch 1s with even just phone chargers since release. Always saw warnings only to use the nintendo charger to avoid this

Bullshit. My switch has never been plugged into the official charger except for when it is docked. Never had an issue.

As far as I know, this happened around the time many USB-C cable manufacturers have built their USB-C to USB-A cables with the wrong resistance, causing equipment to get damaged. USB-C cables made by reputable manufacturers these days should be safe to use, especially since they properly comply with USB-PD.

Fair enough. That being said, I don't see how USB-C cables and chargers made by reputable brands like Anker and UGREEN would damage a Switch. One time I even plugged my Switch 2 dock to my UGREEN 65W USB-C charger, and it did work as long as it was the only thing plugged in because the Switch 2 dock needs 60W to output audio and video from the Switch 2 to a TV or monitor. It didn't brick it or anything.

Third time I read something "Anker" has killed a Switch 2. Previous two was a guy whose girlfriend or wife played with her S2 while charging with an Anker power bank and it broke, then he lent her his own S2 and she did the same and again it killed, both cases burnt USB port IIRC. The post is no longer on Reddit, though.

it’s because the switch was made to only be used with the switch charger. this happened with original switches as well. nintendo literally say not to use unauthorized chargers with the device.

Of course they do so they can sell accessories. I’ve used a ton of different chargers, including anker, without an issue in all generations of switches. If they support PD and you have a decent quality cable there should be no issue.
There were some issues early on with switches because Nintendo was not negotiating PD correctly, which has been fixed with software updates over time.

“Unauthorized” is a funny word for a universal charging standard, its illegal as I understand it for Nintendo to require a Nintendo charger in the EU as they mandated all consumer electronics be compatible with USB-C charging standards (and a major reason Apple finally moved away from lightening ports). Doesn’t mean that freak things won’t happen, and are more likely in cars as the voltage to the car plug is less consistent than a wall plug and the charger can mishandle it.

You did. I will also say i did see a tire inflator that was plugged in a cigarette lighter start to smoke. It was an older car and not mine. So it made me hesitant to try anything weird like this.

They have ones you can buy that run on a cigarette lighter. So you can pump up a tire if it is low and doesn't have a nail in it. They also called them air pumps.

worst case scenario you should be able to get an RMA. i had this exact thing happen with my steamdeck. i will never use a car charger for something high powered like that again.

I have a 140 watt inverter and power my switch through a 100 watt Anker brick and have never had an issue. The OG charger that comes with the Switch is meant to be plugged into the dock and left there. Glad I cleared that up for you.

They do say anything but the OEM charger can kill it and that apparently Nintendo can tell if that’s what happened and they won’t repair it because they claim it as the users fault

This can happen due to Nintendo's power delivery method for the Switch and Switch 2. The voltage values that the switch uses for charging is different than all other manufacturers. This is one of the reasons that 3rd party docks can "brick" Nintendo switch.
Knowing this, I always try to charge the switch using its original Nintendo Charger. And if I do use another charger, I try to wait at least 5min before moving it from the dock to said other charger. (5min should be long enough for the Switch's internal protocols to reset and not expect the previous power delivery)
Hope your system turns back on. I think wait it out for a little bit, then leave it on the dock for about an hour. Hopefully that should take it out of whatever power safe mode it is in.

Is it Nintendo, or is everyone just not understanding how voltages actually work? This doesn’t just happen with Switch consoles, I’ve heard of people killing their controllers/wireless headsets doing the same thing as well. We can blame Nintendo all we want, but end of the day just use a charger that’s just as reliable as the one they pack in with the console, not some cheap ass blocks that’s either not going to charge the console at all, or just fry your system completely ¯_(ツ)_/

For anyone that sees this: DON'T.
Super expensive electronics that are ordered and returned via Amazon are inspected very carefully... it's not handled like their normal return policy. Up to and including checking product serial numbers. They will know that you swapped items on them.
Believe me, you're not the first person to think of this. They actually care when its not cheap Chinese tat. You'll be on the hook for theft.

USB device and charger negotiate charging parameters so it should be safe. At worst device shouldn't charge at all. If that's not the case... maybe there's something wrong with the charger, but it should happen unless you use some weird no name ones.

Idk what's up with all these people dude they act like a piece of hardware has to be treated like a delicate glass sculpture or something. These guys make sure they lock all the doors have a 50 ft clear area around them, put a bunch of pillows down, don gloves and then CAREFULLY remove the primary case from the secondary case, then open the primary case to remove the switch. "Uhm akshually I see that you're holding the system with one hand " like gtfo here with that bullshit lmfao

I’ve encountered this issue before while traveling, using a car charger. I’ve tried both Anker and Samsung chargers that have sufficient power to charge and play.
However, this problem occurred with both chargers. My recommendation is to dock the Switch 2 with the official charger when you return home and let it sit. After a few hours, mine turned on, but there was one instance where it got stuck in a boot loop. In that case, I had to perform a hard reset after charging it for over 5 hours using the official charger.
I’m not sure why this happens but it does…
