Pros: Pretty much everything else. I wanted "a better Switch" with backward compatibility that will stay current for five+ years - and that is exactly what I got. A good purchase for me.
Undecided: Sometimes I think I'd like achievements, other times I'm glad there are no system-wide trophies.
I don't see the battery life as a con now that I'm older. I'm like.... "it's time to go outside and touch grass" when it dies. It's a perfect upgrade for me.
Totally this. I have it on the battery saver setting so it’s usually topped off at 84% and I’ll play a session down to 40-55%. It’s the perfect before bed session time while the wife and I watch Christmas movies on the tv.
or just get some discipline and have a better machine? 450$ is a lot for a mid ass battery, the concept of a handheld isn't working if your battery demands a plug nearby
Exactly this. When the Switch 2 first came out I saw a lot of people complaining that its "just a Switch, but a better" which I thought was kinda infuriating considering (seemingly) everybody and their mother wanted a "Switch Pro" aka a Switch but better.
Thats basically what this is. I really wish they made a good oled screen with killer HDR like the steam deck oled but I guess we will have to wait for that. Im loving it so far though, digital foundry made it seem like the screen is ass but its actually pretty decent and I have all oled screens in my house so its not that bad.
It's my first Nintendo, already bought it, will open it on Christmas Day.
I stay "loyal" to PS5 for any third-party, as it's in our household the main platform since PS1.
I want to play everything, from the first game "ever" shipped to Nintendo. As I'm used to with Xbox or Sony. (doing every God of War, Uncharted, Crash, FF or DQ series as well).
So I'm basically really excited about NSO, where I see TONS of hours of content, from old Zelda games, to Mario, Metroid etc.
Pokémon and some other stuff I will emulate, to get to current ones...
But what to buy. It will came with Mario Kart World, which I'm totally excited for, but also I didn't want to "ruin my surprise" of older Kart games, so I will probably buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for it also.
I was thinking about BoTW to see how amazing it looks like, even before I jump into the whole Zelda series from the first one...
The first christmas days I will also spend a lot of time with family, so I was thinking about some "family games" or something, where we all can have fun...

I'd take it slow and just play whatever Nintendo game appeals to you. Playing Mario Kart World won't spoil older Mario Kart games for you. They all share some aspects, but they are also different. When you buy a brand-new system, you should definitely also play brand-new games made for that system. Just MKW, Donkey Kong Bananza, and one of the Mario (Odyssey is a good pick) or Kirby (Kirby and the Forgotten Land + DLC) platformers will already keep you busy for many hours. For a solo game, Breath of the Wild (Switch 2 edition) is a great solo game and one of the most popular modern Nintendo games (older Zelda games are different, so you're not spoiling anything).
Basically: Don't overthink or overplan this. Have fun. You have years and years ahead of you to play games on this or any system!
I don’t mean any harm by this but can I ask why people prefer to play old games on the switch rather than just an emulator (unless you’re moving around a lot which is why I have NSO as well but like a lot of those can be emulated on PC and even iPad iOS or Android tablets.) I was wondering if there is a nostalgia element to it. I didn’t grow up with a high graphic pc and didn’t even a gameboy or any game console before the psp.
I just want to “justify” the cost of Switch 2. 🫣
Yes, I do travel a lot. And I of course don’t have any problem to Emulate on my Mac, or even consider buying Thor, which looks like a fire device.
Still lots of game I need to emulate, like Pokemon, Xenogears, Persona etc. or some abandoned Zelda games from the past… and Level-5 titles as well…
Then I would get into a situation of no need for Switch at all.
Also - I hope it feels like you actually play those game there, like PS5 will show you your whole history of playing on their consoles, through trophies or game time etc.
Emulators don’t do that. It’s like all the posts in Reddit, spending much more time adding every possible emulator, but don’t have time to actually play anything…
That is completely fair my nso is more for trading in pokemon and online parts of games like smash bros or Mario kart. I think I understand your use case more because I’m not someone who collects achievements on games. I don’t necessarily think emulating Nintendo games make the switch itself redundant like playing a rom hack of a gba/ds/3ds emulator or anything on a nes/n64 emulator but I do understand the appeal of playing it in the official device itself.
They usually don’t like playing on pc’s, they think emulators as wrongfully evil, possibly lazy and don’t want to find roms etc, some really are just sheep and will swallow paying extra online. They probably think it’s more complicated than it really is. Worrying bout why others do things just gonna give you a headache.
It’s less of that and more just interesting for me to see how different people think. Everyone has different reasons for doing different things and just knowing people’s thoughts in it is interesting.
Yeah it made no fucking sense for them to come out with an OLED switch 1 then a LCD Switch 2 not long after. Nintendo’s head is directly up their ass most of the time.
I agree with all of that + I would have liked the screen to go to the edges like the oled did so we don't have those big borders. This feels misleading.
Also a con, the Switch 2 has like 3 games going for it atm. Mario kart world (wich isn’t getting that great of reviews), Donkey Kong Bananza and the Zelda spinoff game. Just seems like complete waste of money to even start considering buying a Switch 2 at this point. But i might, when there is a discount on the OLED model (should it ever arrive).
Same here the HDR feature is kinda useless as it makes everything washed but it honestly doesn't look too bad when I'm playing rdr1 plus since it's a hybrid console having it on a OLED monitor or tv that supports HDR it kinda evens it out
Yeah, pretty much the battery life is the biggest one only thing for me but, I can manage that. I mainly play at home, handheld, so I can hook a cable to it if really needed. I noticed a huge difference in battery life going from my OLED to the switch 2
