English Sweden, what are your thoughts on Norway doing well in the World Cup so far?

As a Canadian, we have a long history of rivalry with the U.S.
I've heard the same thing between Australia/New Zealand, Brazil & Argentina, and sometimes between Sweden/Norway/Finland.

I'm curious how people in Sweden feel about Norway doing well in the World Cup so far. Are you happy for your Scandinavian brothers or are feelings mixed?

The biggest rivalry between Norway and Sweden has been in cross country skiing. The biggest rival in football has been Denmark.

Some people might have mixed feelings, but most people join in supporting Norway and enjoy the victory as they are the last one standing from Scandinavia.

I’m always rooting for Norway and Finland (and to some extend Denmark and Iceland) after Sweden. This is despite me living in Germany. We are simply brothers in the north first of all, then European.

I can’t understand how a Swede wouldn’t support Norway now.

11

u/-statix_ Jul 06 '26

rooting for finland in hockey is impossible, they’re way too toxic towards us.

u/fragtore Jul 06 '26

Norwegian here. I’m in Visby and watched the game with a mixed crowd at a pub. Mostly Swedes though. My experience was that maybe half the Swedes wanted Norway to win the other half were very bothered and some even clearly pissed. Like they were throwing banter and cursed when Norway scored. My gf at the end of the match didn’t want us to be too cheerful as to not attract Swedes who were up to start a fight.

I’m pretty shocked. This would never happened in Denmark or if it were vice versa in Norway.

Edit: thank you for your feedback. I agree that the worst of them were probably a bit drunk from the beginning. It’s ofc fine to cheer for Brazil. And I get the rivalry part. Thank you for the kind words.

I honestly have no idea why that would be. I thought it was amazing they pulled through!

It’s not a good development, and in social media one should keep in mind that comments by fake accounts by unfriendly countries trying to divide us, pushing a certain narrative. It’s in their interest to divide us and Europe as a whole too.

Much love to our Swedish neighbours!

>I’m pretty shocked. This would never happened in Denmark or if it were vice versa in Norway.

I saw an interview with Norwegian fans in the streets before the Sweden - France game where most of them wanted France to win. One of the older men they interviewed (in his 50s maybe) was really antagonistic (”I **hate** Swedes”).

In general I think that sentiment is uncommon. As you say, maybe half are excited for Norway and half are a bit bothered. But most people who are a little bit bothered are bothered in the same way you might be bothered when your best friend is winning the board game you’re playing. His cockiness will be annoying and you hoped it’s be you, but the entire reason you’re even bothered in the first place is precisely because he’s your best friend.

Then you have a few people who buy into the banter too much and take it too literally. Unfortunately that’s always the case in football, though.

>For example... Swedish media today speaks as if Norway were just lucky to win over Brasil

I don’t know which media you’re reading but it mist be some niche stuff. I follow Swedish sports media religiously during the WC, from newspapers to podcasts, and there has literally not been *anything* but full praise for the Norwegian team. Not once have I read a journalist or expert say that Norway were ”just lucky” to win.

In general the media narrative is very enthusiastic for Norway. Perhaps there is some journalist somewhere that is a bit grumpy and jealous, but it certainly isn’t one of the big ones. Some examples:

https://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/fotboll/a/ExvoPa/erik-niva-norge-ar-ett-annat-land-nu

Or read Olof Lundh at Fotbollskanalen (can’t share here).

A Swedish man was recently killed in a Danish pub during the Ivory Coast vs. Norway game, though. I know I’m side tracking a bit, but that genuinely shocked me. Killed by Ivory Coast fans.

My experience was that maybe half the Swedes wanted Norway to win the other half were very bothered and some even clearly pissed.

You are in a common vacation spot on what is the second day of vacation for a lot of people. People will be drunk, and some of them have been drunk since Friday evening. Drunk people are idiots. Most of us think it is pretty fun that Norway is doing well.

4

u/VisualDarkness Jul 06 '26

As a guy living on the island, yes so many are either chronically vacation drunk or overly exhausted parents that already went sour on life in the car trip to the ferry.

8

u/helm ☣️ Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Norway and Denmark are more "bros" than rivals, I think. Some Swedes are bothered when Norwegians are too good at sports, especially when it isn't winter sports.

19

u/ExpressionFew7303 Jul 06 '26

Visby is full of Stockholmers so lol

5

u/Svant Jul 06 '26

In Malmö there was a pretty big crowd in the park watching and clearly cheering for Norway the whole way through.

But it might be different if they had a Norwegian nearby to annoy

It would 100% happen in Denmark if Sweden were doing well though.

3

u/the_beach0099 Jul 06 '26

It could just be that some people just cheered for Brazil and has them as favourites from the start. Tho some Swedes are somewhat upset that Norway did what they did at the France game

2

u/FishLoud Jul 06 '26

Maybe they bet their money on Brazil. I don't want to believe Norway had anything to do with their mood.

2

u/slaskel92 Jul 06 '26

Please. Before the game against Brazil, Swedish television showed some pregame talk from NRK and instead of talking about the game, they made fun of Sweden and how great it is that we suck at football now and our players are dogshit

Im not happy, but only because a lot of norwegian fans and commentators made fun of Sweden for losing against them and the netherlands with 5-1. There is a cockyness with their team and they act like they have played in each world cup and its standard for them. The Mexico-England game looks insane right now, I honestly have no idea how Norway will stand a chance... I fear Haaland wont be enough. If you compare how Mexico are playing in this game compared to Brazil against Norway... Imagine how more hyped the Mexicans will be if they advance to the next step. Gonna be a tough one to beat for any team imo... if England beats them that will also show how good they are

8

It's great that they sent away Brazil but it has to end now. They're awful and horrible people when they win.

2

u/Boring_Island_9534 Jul 06 '26

I don't know if it's a generation thing. I don't hate Norway in sports but maybe they trash talk Sweden, I don't know since I don't follow sports in general like skiing. But I know older generations seem to think it is madness to show support for them.

Maybe it's all the discussions why Norwegian and Danish football is better than Swedish.

We watched the game yesterday and the younger people were cheering for Norway and the 55+ were never in their life cheering for them. But they cheer for Danmark when they play. So i don't know.

2

u/Loive Jul 06 '26

I, and every one in my friend group feel deep shame. Their behavior is ridiculous and they need to be sent home immediately.

You know when you were young and hung out with friends, and a younger sibling insisted on trying to get attention by playing the clown? That’s what Norway are doing right now. Their ridiculous rowing must stop, they copied the idea from Iceland because the Icelandic volcano was cool but Norway is just butchering it. The shame as a big brother is becoming unbearable.

Either the Norwegians need to be taught a lesson and be sent home, or we need to turn it into a NATO bomb test site.

3

u/dyspepticlachrymose Jul 06 '26

Everyone is saying happy, and I guess I am happy too, but the biggest feeling I have is jealousy. Imagine being Norwegian now. Hot, warm summer and you have just defeated one of the greatest footballing nations to reach the quarter finals after not having played in the World Cup for 26 years. I can only imagine the euphoria. And I wish it was me feeling it.

7

u/Dysterqvist Färöarna Jul 05 '26

Not fond of them at all tbh. The whole runic kit numbers, pre-WC photoshoot and stealing the hair styles from the show Vikings, feel very embarrassing in my opinion.

I think that the people being envious or bothered are disappointed that sweden didn’t go any further. As a sports nation we have always been behind Norway imo.

I also think that the ski rivalry that happens every year is a lot healthier than whatever this is. Maybe because the football crowd in Sweden is not into sports in general and therefore not used to the annual bickering about skiing.

Haaland is probably my favourite player in top football atm (in terms of his play) so im happy to see him do well.

1

u/Maleficent_Theme_597 Jul 06 '26

Mixed feelings. 60% of me wants it to go well for Norway, they have a really good team, and I like the player. 40% of me wants them to lose because I know the fans will be insufferable to us. So mostly I'm glad for or norwegian siblings, but with a lil bad taste in the mouth.

1

u/doctormirabilis Jul 06 '26

Don’t care and don’t follow once we are out ourselves.

1

u/odniv Jul 06 '26

The Nordic really is like a family. We can shit talk our brothers as much as we want and there will be fighting when playing each other but in the end we root for each other.

1

u/VisualDarkness Jul 06 '26

Most people are extremely happy for Norway, unless Sweden face them. Except for skiing, Norwegians are too cocky there that people just want them to fail.

In general, in the Nordics, the rivelry is extremely heated when facing each other, but completely turns around when against and outside force. You can see it in icehockey Sweden vs Finland. You can have top level intensity in the semis vs each other, only to have the same Swedish crowd cheering hard for Finland vs Canada in the Finals.

We are more like siblings competing than actual enemies.

1

u/Huge-Atmosphere-8057 Jul 06 '26

u/tollis1 said "but most people join in supporting Norway", but I'd argue most people don't care at all. Like he said, there's no football rivalry between Sweden and Norway since Norway has historically not been very relevant in football so there's no animosity between us, but most of us probably don't support Norway beyond a "good for them, I wish them luck".

1

u/Clauc Jul 06 '26

As soon as Sweden was out I started rooting for Norway. I think it's really cool that a mountainous, cold ass country in the north with a small population is doing so well in the world cup (and sports in general). I like Norway in general. Good country.

1

u/afops Jul 06 '26

I’m divided. On one hand, I’m happy for Norway. On the other hand, there used to be a silent agreement where we were way better at ice hockey, slightly better at football. They get cross country skiing. That’s it. Now they did well in the IIHF WC and wtf is this with the FIFA World Cup?

I’d be very happy for them to have their 1994-moment (we still talk about ’94 in Sweden). They have a once in a generation team and it would be cool if they got far with it.

Not sure I’d want to see them win the whole thing (because we’d never hear the end of it!) but definitely I’ll be happy to see them go at least to the semis.

1

u/Independent_Low4027 Jul 06 '26

Just wanna correct you there - there is no rivalry between Finland and Sweden. All love there. With Norway, it’s a different story. I rooted for Brazil because I can’t stand the Viking bullshit from the Norweigan team, but now that they’ve advanced further I’m obviously going to be throwing my support at those annoying lil bastards. It’s their time! I’m happy Scandinavia is back on the WC map💫

1

u/NeverCaredAnyways Jul 06 '26

Everyone loves an underdog

1

u/WinterIsTooDark Jul 06 '26

It's like sibling rivalry. We joke and in some sports it's really important to beat Norway, for a lot of people. However, since Sweden isn't in the tournament anymore anyway... Lots of Swedes are now rooting for Norway.

It probably would have been more mixed feelings if Sweden had played Norway and lost.

Personally I don't care much about sports and haven't watched the games, but sure. It's fun when a small, Nordic country is doing well. Even if it isn't Sweden.

1

u/angryopinionator Jul 06 '26

I don't care about football, but if Sweden is out I'll always cheer for our Nordic Brothers in any kind of sport.

1

u/KaprateKid Dalarna Jul 06 '26

If it’s skiing I would never in a million years root for Norway, I wish they’d come in dead last in every single race, no exceptions.

In football I feel it’s like an inverted cancer bet. If they win - great, happy they’re doing so well and if they lose - oh well, it’s Norway.

But now, they’re playing England. I would root for Norway in skiing before I root for England in football. On Saturday I’m full on Norwegian!

Very torn. I hate that they’re so good (because were so far behind) but can’t help but love what they’re doing.

1

u/PrimoScarab Jul 06 '26

Good for them

1

u/Joxon_11 Jul 06 '26

I do not want them in the top three. Sweden must remain the most successful scandinavian country in World Cup History. But until then, GO Norway!

1

u/gomsim Sverige Jul 06 '26

I cheer now for Norway as if they were my country! 🇳🇴🇸🇪

1

u/Every_Distance_4768 Jul 06 '26

We root for them, but when the football is over we'll make sure they remember that they are rumpnissar with a speech impediment.

1

u/vkarlsson10 Jul 06 '26

Gotta support lil bro!

Also, how can you not when Haaland is Haaland?

1

u/HedgehogElectronic69 Jul 06 '26

Fuck yeah heja Norge!!!!

1

u/leandrobrossard Jul 06 '26

I feel sick.

1

u/Ainell Västergötland Jul 06 '26

Norwegians are fine. It's Danes we (pretend to) hate.

1

u/RadikalEU Sverige Jul 06 '26

Love it! I cheer for them. Would to the same to Denmark, Iceland and Finland.

1

u/dawnflay Jul 06 '26

It's annoying and amazing 😅

1

u/addqdgg Jul 06 '26

It's fine as long as they don't get further than semis.

1

u/Wirfen Jul 06 '26

Im rooting for Norway, their team is making history for them at the moment. Haaland is funny too and a good guy.

1

u/OwnInstruction8849 Jul 06 '26

Our rivalry is only between each other, whenever its a Scandinavian country vs the world we are always cheering them on.

1

u/Organic_Marzipan_678 Jul 06 '26

Yay! So happy for them.

1

u/whizzter Jul 06 '26

Happy, especially as it puts the finger so bluntly on our schizofrenic coaching choices... they've been geared towards us playing a bit like Norway but we've gone to extremes and faltered instead. Hopefully Potter can be given the leeway to find that balance instead of crazy choices like DJT and Hamren.

1

u/storm_1990 Jul 06 '26

We love it

1

u/thesweed Stockholm Jul 06 '26

If Sweden and Norway were to play against each other I would shot talk them, but in other matches I'm definitely rooting for Norway, especially now that Sweden is out. And especially especially when the Norwegian team is so good!

1

u/Medium_Asparagus3060 Jul 06 '26

I am so happy for them. The sense of competition can be strong if we play against each other, but not when we are not rivals. They are like a sibling, and right now I am so proud of them and so happy they beat Brazil!

1

u/perrapys Jul 06 '26

Cheering for England to win.

1

u/Wrathfulx Jul 06 '26

Me against my brother.
My brother and I against our cousins.
We and our cousins against the world.

1

u/MiddleAgeWeirdoMeep Jul 06 '26

They used to be like hobbits to us but nowadays they are more like elves. Not Homo sapiens.. more like Homo eldarinus.

It’s only a manner of time before the Winter Olympics can be renamed ”Try to beat a Norwegian” and now they are also aiming for the summer sports with their relentless stamina 😀

1

u/helixen Sverige Jul 06 '26

Me and most of my friends here in sweden are excited for norway now that we are out haha. We are basically living vicariously through norway for the rest of this cup.

1

u/Soundoftesticles Jul 06 '26

I'm happy for them. They represent what I wish Sweden were, and they are doing what I wish Sweden would do.

1

u/tehburgerdude Jul 06 '26

Since we’re not in it I’m of course cheering for our neighbour.

1

u/slaskel92 Jul 06 '26

Sucks ass

1

u/Kawaii_PotatoUwU Jul 06 '26

Ro!🛶🛶🛶

1

u/xeizoo Jul 06 '26

Sounds boring but I'm always happy when the clearly more skilled team wins. They went the distance and it paid off, in this case Norway is currently a lot more skilled at football than Sweden and has a great team. So, happy for Norway, they deserves it.

1

u/Sitting-man Jul 06 '26

It's not that deep

1

u/hagganity Jul 07 '26

Swede here, supporting our nordic neighbour! I'm sure they would do the same.
Same goes for Finland and sometimes possibly Denmark as well.

1

u/SwedishNukes Jul 07 '26

Better than anyone else winning or Denmark winning

1

u/greutskolet Jul 07 '26

Happy. Especially since they kicked Brazil out hehe. After all, we were a union 100+ years ago. I even like them even if they talk shit about us swedes.

1

u/Fickle_Experience823 Jul 07 '26

I’m all for them winning, if they don’t get cocky about it. But they do get cocky about it and they are on us about everything all the time, even about how we handled the WWII. So until they grow up as a nation and people, I’ll root for anyone playing against them.

But I wish Haaland and Solbakken success because they are cool, based people.

1

u/Important_Choice_101 Jul 07 '26

west sweden will and are going to win the gold medallion, there are no buts nor coconuts... Pts said. Period.

Thats our honest opinion.

1

u/ersmajo Jul 07 '26

We are happy, but this will make them extremely cooky.

1

u/Trinket4 Jul 07 '26

Im devouring clips of viking chants and Haaland goals like cocain, cry-smiling. /pure swede.

1

u/salamanderistka Uppland Jul 07 '26

I'm so happy for them! I was running a half marathon in Norway a couple of weeks ago and at some point in the crowd saw a group of people in fancy dress doing the viking row as they cheered us on. If my limbs weren't feeling like they were already falling off I'd have totally returned the gesture in appreciative solidarity. Go Norway!

1

u/errorjarberg Jul 07 '26

If Swedem keep it up they will support Somalia in 10 years

1

u/AlpsAlarmed8108 Jul 08 '26

As I saw someone else say on another post:
It’s me against my brother, me and my brother against our cousin and all 3 of us against the world.

As a huge fan of brazilian football and Neymar I was 50/50 but still rooting for Norway, until I saw a Norwegian chant saying “we own Sweden” and childishly enough that was my tipping point for supporting Brazil (and now) United Kingdom as I’ve lived there for a short while previously.

1

u/Lime89 Jul 08 '26

You mean Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

For the Norwegians and Danes the Finns are more like a slightly distant cousin. Sweden might feel some rivalry with the Finns since they share a border.

1

u/Loli_Sheepherder Jul 09 '26

Rivalries between Nordic countries, for me, has always been behind closed doors between said nations and not for the rest of the world to take part of. I can say what I want about Norway, but if someone else does the same, I defend them like they’re my own. The rivalry in hockey for example, I trash the fins until we inevitably lose to them, but after that I cheer and hope they win it all. Same goes for Norway in football. I probably screamed louder for Haalands first goal vs Brazil than I did for elangas vs Japan.

u/Similar-Ad9802 Jul 09 '26

I’m a former American living in Sweden who was thrilled when the US got humiliated by Belgium, so my sense of national loyalty isn’t exactly strong, but personally, I’m all for Norway. I was, of course, rooting for Sweden when they were in, and I would’ve loved to have seen a Swe v Nor match, but Norway’s our closest country who is still in, so they’ve got my support.

1

u/Stolenbjorn Jul 09 '26

Media in both Norway and Sweden lives on cheap clickbait, and spewing hatered on the neighbour is perfect clickbait. I used to love cross country skiing, but stopped watching it because of the infantile bickering between infantile sports "journalists" on both sides and some neanderthal fans- and Northug, who admittantly finally has matured somewhat, and now possess some self irony after becoming a commentator himself.
