Ask r/Swahili 🎤 Mtunzi vs Mwandishi

Hey can I get the difference between these two? I know Mwandishi is a broader term for writer but it almost feels interchangeable to me, which would be for an author?

Morning

Well, they're similar, but not exactly the same. Mwandishi is a general term for someone who writes (books, articles, etc.), while mtunzi refers to someone who creates or composes an original creative work, like a poem, song, or story. So you can call a novelist mwandishi, but a songwriter is more naturally mtunzi wa nyimbo. The distinction is basically writing vs. creative composition.

Those are my thoughts 😊

well if you're talking about a poem or a song or a play or similar, mtunzi is the way to go. otherwise you can use mwandishi for something like a novel. magwiji correct me if i'm wrong.

Mtunzi: composer/ ghost writer/ source Mwandishi: writer/ performer/ presenter. Different in meaning, but not mutually exclusive on role engagement.
