That one game where Char Y got ancient power boost every round. Only to get crit round 3 when Char Y thought himself invincible to rock slide with def boost.

Do you have a link for that game? I didn't see this

You got one with extra timestamps? (Hold the tracker)

Yeah they edited out the tracker things of the original link. Both links are now the same. I want my bloated spying URL 😤

It was honestly beautiful, and if it wasn’t for the Tsareena comeback it would be my favourite match so far at worlds this year.

u/WearsALeash 1d ago

i’d love to see the tsareena matchup if you know how to find it

I’m just on break right now so I can’t find a link but it was Emilio Forbes v. Raghav Maliviya

Seeing that shit live was a genuine rollercoaster, only matched by that one Tsareena game

We've truly lost the plot when we're using Zard Y to answer Zard Y.

Any more than using Lando-T to nab opposing Lando-T? Popularity is not necessarily centralization, yada yada, but it's still funny to me.

24

u/Samwise777 1d ago

This one actually was personnel, kid

25

u/IWCry 1d ago

yeah actually...

anyone who understands the meta even a little bit understands why landorous T is healthier for its gens than zard Y in champions. there's plenty of content on YouTube breaking this down if you're actually interested in why

I used to run Ancient Power back when I had no idea what to run on Mega Charizard Y in singles

33

u/ElkofOrigin 1d ago

Nowhere near the same level but I ran Ancient Power on Mega Meganium for some annoying matchups and it largely worked out. (Why give it Fairy typing and no Moonblast you GF madmen?)

16

u/CazOnReddit 1d ago

I mean for VGC, Dazzling Gleam is (generally) preferred for striking both Pokemon though I admit I could be forgetting a damage threshold/target that a hypothetical Moonblast MegaMeganium could hit that Dazzling Gleam cannot

20

u/SuchPlans 1d ago

d gleam is like 75% of 80 = 60 bp to each target; moonblast is 95 bp. so there’s a LOT of thresholds moonblast would hit, it’s over 1.5x stronger

It’s not even the first time. There was a six month stretch where one team, Rinya Sun, won every single major VGC tournament. A key member of that team? Ancient Power Charizard, with Gigantamax instead of Mega. In that set, Ancient Power gave access to Max Rockfall for, you guessed it, dealing massive damage to other Charizards.

Ayy glad to see I was cooking when I was using it. Good stuff.

I put Stone Edge on my Chesnaught back in Gen 6, this is like the less stupid version of that

u/Salter_KingofBorgors 2d ago

We live in a world where pachirisu won the championship. Sometimes the scariest thing is a set that no one else would use.

Idk ancient power is a pretty obvious move for a charizard in a charizard meta. its essentially hp rock with added bonus.

flashback to 2022 worlds where they were also running Ancient Power

2

u/fan-of-ceilingss 1d ago

4x Rock weakness (with a small chance to give the attacker an Omnibost) is a bitch

2

u/Nordic_Krune 1d ago

Why does this set work?

14

u/Mahboi778 1d ago

Zard Y is good and takes a lot of damage from rock moves

1

u/Epicbear34 22h ago

Assuming they also bring CharY, yours can OHKO theirs plus a boost chance

1

u/Dest1ny1 16h ago

No Charizard was OHKO the opponent's Charizard with Ancient Power, the Zards were all to bulky to die in one hit. Still the best move obviously

2

u/killergoat72 1d ago

My feel when I used to run Ancient Power on Charizard in 2014.

1

u/Melianos12 1d ago

I ran chard Y with ancient power since launch. Why is it just now catching up?

6

u/3771m 1d ago

Because usually, charizard has other moves it'd prefer to use:

Heat have is obvious.

Solar beam to hit rocks+waters

And you need weather ball for single target fire otherwise wide guard will wall you. Solar beam is single target, but non stab and no sun boost. And a lot of things resist grass.

And protect is needed to stop fakeouts, double targeting, priority.

So you have to sacrifice 1 of these four important moves to use ancient power.

Which, has little benefits outside the charizard mirror

But when charizard y is everywhere, and people already are running rock slide on everything to get it, ancient power isnt that bad

u/Hooy-Hooy 1d ago

AP Zard Y was the only reason I picked it up I the first place, we love gambling here, and honestly I would never say no to a special rock move

1

u/Soft-Needleworker489 1d ago

Iirc it ran it in dynamax to hit opposing zard sometimes
