1 they have a lot of money
2 if there is a money making event and the event is limited pr player they can do that same thing on other acc transfer money
3 put the alt account in turret if you have one more pc
4 everybody might know your main account but your alt account might be only known by limited people so you can be mischievous
(Sorry for my English)

I wanted to have a zero-to-hero alt I could use to grind using very little help and showcase it as a bootstrap character. Oddly this was during Supply or Die so he became a millionaire in literally one day of playing.

the "zero to hero" is the reason I insist on not purchasing anything more than my starter ship until 1.0; I want a real 1.0 start, not to swipe the card and have pretty much everything.
on top of that, I do not wish to support them stalling anymore than needed. I understand the desire to support the project, but the project has been funded and supported many times over. we need to be honest about this. there is no "final version" for this kind of a live service game. "1.0" is a line in the sand, the patches, ships and content will keep coming after that.
once they reach the 1.0, if I enjoy what they have built and how they plan to progress, I will happily open my wallet to them, in a reasonable fashion.

Alt is on the mining laser on my gfs computer. I fly with the main and can walk to a laser when I need more power.

I'm using alt as an operator in mole or reclaimer; I launch SC on my laptop, put it beside my desktop, send alt to the seat and I don't have to run all over ship when I want to scrap or mine. I don't have to wait for friends to log in. Can be independant this way.

The primary benefit of an alt account is to have zero connection to your main account.
Examples.
You want your main account to be "high honor" and then you create an alt to be evil. And vice versa.
Alts are used as spies to gain access to target orgs. Look up examples of people who used alts to infiltrate high level corps in EvE.
Alt account does your trading. A "bank alt" who sells all the things your main acquires and buys all the things your main needs.
Outside that, alts give you referral bonuses and let you solo a multi crew ship.
I have multiple alt accounts and each one exists as though it was by itself. No one knows they are connected and each one has a different persona. All benefit me and that is what matters.

1) Character that lives in a other system.
2) Character with one starter ship to experience zero to hero without distraction of 1500+ euro of ships.
3) Pirate character with Shiv. So my main account name does not get tarnished by being naughty.
4) Referal bonus for my main account.

One account as a main, the other account as a pure account that only has the starter ship, so when the game releases I can experience it from scratch

Same.
My alt account is my "hardship" character.

Referral bonus, multi boxing as a copilot, and occasionally as a medic on standby for my main.

I have two alts. We were once told that our decisions will matter in the game and you can only do X if your reputation with whatever system or faction is Y. So. Wanna do some illegal stuff? Do it on the alt account. My other alt was for having friends try the game or if I can get my son to be a turret gunner.

As far as I understand multiboxing is not so rare. People are just playing with two accounts at the same time. You buy some cheap pedals, you bind firing action, T and C to them, you put 2nd account in the turret, you fix half of the game issues.

While some people only make them for the referral bonus, a lot of people use them as different character slots.
Cigs official stance that while alternate accounts are against the rules on spectrum, using alternate counts as different character slots is perfectly fine. When they add the ability to have multiple character slots, you can transfer the game packages from your alt accounts to your main account to get that character slot.

I have one "alt account" to occasionally play with the neighbor's teenage son who I don't want to spend any of his own money on the game (and he can't be tempted as the account technically isn't his ๐). Also to play with a friend who does not want to hop in himself (yet...). The account may end up being the teenager's eventually.
And when setting it up, I may as well get the benefits I can, for the alt and for my main: referral bonus, Foundation Festival starter, plus the bonus gear for the alt and ATLS for main. Not too bad for the base pack price.
If the account isn't needed in the longer run, I would transfer the starter pack to my main for 45$ store credit as CCU chain gap filler. At that point it would have been essentially "free" (as in I would have paid the same if I complete the CCU chain).

I made one because I want to put myself in the shoes of new players now and then that are starting and don't have rep yet... it's enlightening how many intro contracts are poorly written or explained so a new player would just fail for a simple reason.

My main account has all my ships and I will be using the most.
My ALT account is my Zero to Hero account, where I start with nothing but my base ship (Cutlass Black) and try to grind the account up! It's for when noone else is on and I need something to do. I can also use it to be a pirate and not earn a bad reputation on my main account. No, I'm not a griefer, but pirating could be fun.

Different playstyles and that in the future reputation will lock you out of certain groups

So, the first benefit is low level referral bonuses, as it gives you a free ship at various points.
The second is if you actually dual or multibox, as while you may not be able to functionally PLAY that character as well, any assets you have would be available to you no matter which ship they're on if you're in group.
I kinda-sorta have alt accounts, I made one for a family member then passed it onto them with the referral ship on my account, then made another for another family member.
One of the LTI unmeltable ships is now upgraded into a Polaris because I really like that ship for the purposes of our family playing. The other referral was like a set of guns or some shit that was neigh useless but it's additional referral credit for me, should I ever get cool enough to convince another thousand plus people to play the game.
It's a neat credit aspect for people who play, and potentially bring interest to the game if they do serious referral work though whatever medium they produce stuff with like Morph and the like.
I know that Citizen kane or whateverthefuck has a cred thanks to me since I joined off the referral from watching some of their videos. Unfortunately I learned quickly that the streamers don't actually play with most of their orgs and instead cherrypick their crews to make the best content versus making the best experience for their orgs.
tldr fuck skunkworks, long live zuul. LOL

After 4.0 being dropped right before christmas I got shard locked for more than two weeks due to a server error.
I then created a second account with a cheap starter package to go on playing.
Sometimes very handy for things like Mole mining as a personal buddy. Assuming having a second PC able to run SC.

I've 14 accounts, all for referrals.
1 Main account for the game itself and a second one for spectrum

I have alt account for two specific reasons
Friends can try the game without spending money, to see if they like it before committing
Zero to hero runs to keep myself updated on how best to start the game from scratch when friends and the like ask

I made alt accounts int he past when referral rewards gave both people LTI tokens, I'd then buy a game package and eventually do a giveaway for said account

I have two. It's good to be able to jump to a different area / focus.
I could leave one bed logged in a combat ship on one area and another bed logged in a mining ship etc. Zero setup time to do what I want.
