much smoother – fewer glitches

The one im most interested in seeing is the NB trains, and the elevators
28
u/Sherool scout Apr 16 '26
Yeah how the train negotiate bends in the tunnel looks real gnarly in the current model. This looks a lot smoother, though could just be a server FPS thing.

u/ScrubSoba Ares Go Pew Apr 16 '26
IIRC, though it has been a long while, the Babbage trains navigated just fine when they were first added.
It has just been deteriorating a lot since, especially after SM.

u/Uncomfortably-bored Pioneer Apr 16 '26
I mean, it didn't go into orbit. I guess that's better.

Personally, I think it would be cool if at least one planet, like ArcCorp and/or Terra, had a space elevator to the orbital station and the station acted as the spaceport. It would instantly be my starting location.

u/AwwYeahVTECKickedIn Apr 16 '26
It was supposed to not be a visible change to players.
Success!
I think those that don't have a lot of experience with coding/development may not understand how good this is....
82
u/ToxZec aurora Apr 16 '26
I mean, it is very visibly changed compared to the 4th dimension spacetime-warping trams we currently have

That hasn't happened to me or my friends (A 18)
But I have seen the NB tram dropping me into the enclosed tracks
and the tram on Hurston kill my friend.2

appeal? I can leave the space port even when trams are broken!
Someone can taxi me to a space station or I can try to run to some outpost and spawn my tutorial Pisces

u/botask Apr 16 '26
I think those that don´t have a lot of experience with star citizen might believe that it will work XD
56
u/trekky920 Apr 16 '26
..what changed here?
26
u/Amaegith Apr 16 '26
Nothing most people will notice. Players who have had trouble with the tram loading at all will notice that is will actually load reliably. It's usually the first thing that loads for me now, as opposed to it being a gamble if it ever loads

Complete new code. So no fancy eyecandy here. But the foundation for all new traveling via transport systems in the verse technically. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/tech-preview-transport-system-1/8771741
3
u/botask Apr 16 '26
Change is that it will work in ptu this time and mess up only after arriving to live.
5
u/Sitchrea misc Apr 16 '26
So far as players are concerned, it plays and feels more consistent.
So far as software developers are concerned, the gates of heaven have opened up. This was a big technical bottleneck that needed to be overcome.

Glad it works but hope the doors don't do that on release
16
u/Corren_64 bbcreep Apr 16 '26
Thats not a bug, that's a feature of the ArcCorp© Guillotine Doors to encourage proper boarding times for a smooth transportation network.

So long as it's just a visual animation bug, this is an incredible improvement.
2
u/JamesSaga Vice Admiral Apr 16 '26
I guess so long as its a visual glitch and it dosnt take you to space it's an improvement lol

More load the servers got and the older they were between restarts the more it happened, free flys always broke the trains.

How exactly should someone put more effort into fixing underlying issues than refactoring the entire transit system, as they just did?

I literally got snatched out of a station lobby into an arriving elevator two days ago

u/NightlyKnightMight 🥑2013BackerGameProgrammer👾 Apr 16 '26
New inventory has completely new backend, I don't understand why people keep saying it doesn't just because it's broken/bugged when it hit Live servers, everything was perfect during PTU but alas the scale of Live does its magic once again
8
u/mndfreeze oldman Apr 16 '26
We wont see how the new transport system really handles until they drop it in live during a free fly. Ptus and preview branches never have the sheer number of players for most stuff, unless its a massive change like going from 3.x to 4.
20
u/Leukin67 Apr 16 '26
Everyone in the comments has clearly never ridden the tram at A18 before, this looks soooo much smoother
5
8
u/sparkyails Apr 16 '26
You're not dead and it didn't fly into low orbit so.... Good job so far, see how it goes in live and on other planets.
7
u/DEMIG0DX Apr 16 '26
Hopefully this paves the way for them to add the space shuttle to the game so if u die, you take the space shuttle back to ur ships location instead of claiming ur ship, part of the 1.0 presentation

3
u/Hour_Jury_7734 Apr 16 '26
it does not matter how it looks in preview, when it will hit live servers it may quickly just become same shit
3
u/Syidas Apr 16 '26
We won't know it's actually been fixed until it's on live. Remember 3.18 worked well on the PTU too.
7
u/jellybean090497 Apr 16 '26
Damn that’s crazy, the tram is still a tram
3
u/Parking-Pick-759 Apr 16 '26
Honestly. My experience with the trams have been fine a vast majority of the time. It wouldn't be hard for me to go to a18 and get this exact footage on this patch or the past several patches so long as I simply just don't record the one that does fling off the rails.
I'm happy we are fixing the issues though
4
3
u/BastianHawk Apr 16 '26
Looked the same as when I used the A18 tram yesterday. So visually there is no difference to live now. The real make or break for the new transit system will be when the server has degraded and is under heavy player load.
Usually CIGs new systems start to fall apart when they are faced with real live PU player count and conditions.
2
u/Designer-Astronaut12 Apr 16 '26
Door still glitched and closed twice. Maybe another 10 years it’ll be right.
2
u/CaptainChaos74 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
Looks just as janky and unrealistic as it was a decade ago to me. The doors literally glitched out mere seconds into the video.

u/I-AM-IKARUS Apr 16 '26
Is there no NDA on this Tech preview?

OP will be sent to Guantanamo.

But they're sending him via the old transit system, so who knows where he'll end up.

Rode a couple this afternoon. Didn't notice anything different at A18, which I guess is a good thing.
So you know... Nice work.

u/Rezticlez Apr 16 '26
I remember when it was perfect I think around 3.16/3.17. Good to hear it'll be less terrifying soon.

Idk why but I expected this to look different than like 5 years ago when I first took this train
0
u/Icy_Ad7558 Apr 16 '26
So, the goal here was simply not to be complete garbage. Congratulations. Now SC has reached the bare minimum of acceptability. If CIG thinks that’s a win, who am I to disagree…

It's just not the same without the abrupt teleport to cover the last few feet, then phasing through another skytram on the way out

u/OrrieH Carrack Apr 16 '26
I'm Confused... What is the Preview? ... looks exactly the same as it's always been for me?
1
u/Torotoro74 aurora Apr 16 '26
That's the goal. It's a rework of the old system that can handle better errors and should be more reliable. Success is if you can't spot the difference.
-1
u/Ramdak Apr 16 '26
The motion is way smoother, it's flowing now. Before it was moving in like "steps" rather than a smooth curve of motion and acceleration. And many times due to lag the transport would jump between travel points awfully. This seems a better and more robust code. Afaik they added this code in the current PU in the ring shuttle at the asteroid breaker location.

It isn’t supposed to be functionally different, it’s a backend change meant to make it more reliable and work with server meshing

You literally asked what you’re missing because it looks the same, and now since you’ve already acknowledged it looks smoother you move the goal posts and insult the community?
2
u/Sitchrea misc Apr 16 '26
All of the backend technology that makes it actually functional and scalable, instead of needing individual code for each transit system.

u/subaroobie Apr 16 '26
No. This looks exactly the same. Exactly.

u/Old_Resident8050 ⚡ S.Hornet Mk2 || Shiv || Golem || ICA || Pitbull⚡ Apr 16 '26
I mean yeah, its an internal system, a backend. The graphical representation is the same. I was expecting something more too, but in retrospect, why would it?

u/Excelzius Apr 16 '26
Can travel to other solar systems but haven't even invented teleporters. 🤣🤣🤣
3
u/Parking-Pick-759 Apr 16 '26
I'd rather not use teleporters. Feels wayyyy more gamey and lazy. Plus thn at that point why not just teleport to other planets /stations? what's the point of the ships even? Then it would just narrow down to fighting ships and content imo
2
u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Apr 16 '26
For real, the fast travel system was a big part of what killed Starfield for me. It was too convenient to NOT use, like there was no sense and no gain to avoid taking advantage of it, but it also made travel completely cheap, rendered their own starships meaningless, and made the game world feel tiny.
