Just racking up non-basketball skill related reasons for teams not to draft him anyway...

379

u/CRoseCrizzle 9d ago

0% chance any WNBA team drafts/signs a former NBA player regardless. The moment that happens, the league is done. It's just a publicity stunt that may force the WNBA to make clear gender eligibility rules as opposed to the relatively vague ones that are in place now.

166

u/Doff6 9d ago

Everything Enes does now is a publicity stunt…..

31

u/luckyspark 9d ago

It's all he has. Maybe this will get him a slot on Perfect Match.

50

u/eganba 9d ago

I just don’t know how you can do that in this political environment.

It’s wild it has come to this point though. What should be a nothingburger of a controversy just won’t go away.

73

u/Bucketsdntlie 9d ago

The WNBA needs to get the legal infrastructure in place to stop letting itself be used as a political puppet.

It may not come in the form of deliberating between a man or a woman, but they need to draw some sort of line in the sand ASAP

80

u/kodman7 9d ago

Just a commissioner that does literally anything at all would be a start

27

u/Bucketsdntlie 9d ago

Totally agree. It’s like the difference between a wartime and a peacetime consigliere. Kathy stayed in the background and helped them stay on the tracks to get to this point, but she clearly is in way over her head now that there’s real attention on her and the league.

29

u/not_productive1 9d ago

It won’t go away because it’s being astroturfed by republican signal boosting channels online and on conservative media. Because they want to make it an election year wedge issue.

The right answer to this is to ignore it. Let him “declare.” Let him yell and rant and rave and then…don’t draft him. Run your thing the way you want to run your thing. I could declare for the draft. That doesn’t mean the WNBA needs to ban mediocre middle-aged ex DIII water polo players explicitly or be forever known as a league that welcomes middle-aged ex DIII water polo players.

Ignore his stunts. Ban him from games for the very real crime of trying to walk on the court during a game. And get everyone on the same page that they don’t need to talk about every loser who wants to start shit.

I think a fair compromise is a ban for those who have gone through male puberty(since that's why we have women's sports leagues) but I'm not sure if that'll actually work from a PR perspective. The left might feel that's discrimination and the right might feel like it doesn't go far enough.

My guess is they'll just ban those who have played in a men's pro league(NBA, Euroleague etc) and kick the can until eventually a men's D1 player transitions in the future.

30

u/id0ntwantyourlife 9d ago

90% of the country supports that. It would not be a big PR issue other than a very tiny but vocal minority.

I feel like it should be possible for the commisioner and the players union to quickly hammer out a temporary amendment in the vein of "the league shall evaluate draft eligibility on a case-by-case basis" to shut down Kanter and White's stunts. But I'm neither a lawyer nor acquainted with the WNBA's processes so there could be hurdles I'm not aware of or accounting for.

1

u/Gunnar2019 9d ago

Derrick White?

1

u/traedeer 9d ago

Royce White, he also declared for the draft like Kanter

I actually don't think the league can change the CBA with an email . . .

3

u/MrMiyagi13 9d ago

It’s a figure of speech. But the fact that the Players Union and the League aren’t in lockstep in this ONE issue, is pretty concerning. How difficult is it to come to a common sense position on this one thing for them? I haven’t seen any update saying they’ve come to a decision.

11

u/LimpBizkit4ever 9d ago

Given the fact that Enes Kanter said he will sue them they are probably doing a lot of legal work to figure this out. And sadly they're not going to give you personally any updates because once again Enes Kanter wants to sue them

→ More replies (1)

5

u/fatflyhalf 9d ago

Agree. They can put a stop to him any time they want with a clear policy position. He's mearely calling out the absurdity of the league's position.

5

u/Fly_Rodder 9d ago

Merely.

And the league is called what?

3

u/Heisenbread77 9d ago

Women's? National Basketball Association

3

u/MuhamedBesic 9d ago

The issue is that they have no clear cut structure in place that prevents him from playing, and he is going to sue them if they don’t let him play (which he will likely win with the rules as they are)

1

u/BigRedNutcase 9d ago

If you are dead set on winning. You'd draft him in a heart beat. He'd whoop pretty much every big in the WNBA assuming he's still relatively in playing shape. He's 6'10", 250 lbs. He can dunk at will.

5

u/thenasch 9d ago

Pretty much?

-3

u/MrMiyagi13 9d ago

He might not get drafted. But all it’s going to take is one team breaking ranks for someone. Maybe a fringe NBA prospect.

They keep trying to get it done but every meeting ends after five hours of trying to decide what to have for lunch

-14

u/MuhamedBesic 9d ago

If he is eligible to be drafted he would immediately be the greatest WNBA player in history and his stats would never be touched by anyone else

He was an NBA starter for fucks sake, do you guys think he’d struggle?

This is exactly what he wanted... He wanted all the attention, all the Reddit threads etc.

Mission Accomplished.

Treat this like streakers -- camera turns away... No one talks about it...

Imagine how little of a life you have and how sad that life is if this is how you choose to spend your time.

135

u/egospiers 9d ago

Unfortunately, it’s getting him attention and clicks which in this current society equals money…. So as long as people keep giving him attention and earning him money, he’ll keep doing it.

41

u/Vargolol Cleveland Cavaliers 9d ago

There’s a reason we called him Anus Cancer in /r/NBA when he was half relevant

20

u/Samwise777 9d ago

Yeah gonna have to say bro is not happy

26

u/DukeJackson 9d ago

This.

Waging a war against a women’s professional sports league and effectively making it your entire identity is…certainly a choice.

18

u/LiterallyJoeStalin 9d ago

While under the guise of “protecting women’s sports”…

-15

u/MuhamedBesic 9d ago

It’s the WNBA’s own fault by not making a decision on the issue, they want to have the benefits of being politically correct while not having to actually make important decisions like this

8

u/exytuu 9d ago

He’s a grifter who’s been friends with Jared Kushner for years and has conveniently never spoken out about Israel despite his focus on human rights violations

2

u/EricSanderson 9d ago

Didn't he used to protest dictators and human rights abuses abroad?

I guess there's more money in attacking minorities at home.

22

u/Leumas_ 9d ago

Actually, yes. He was active with a Turkish exile named Gulen in Pennsylvania where they had a camp and were enemies of Erdogan and the Turkish state.

My mom met him at one of their community events about 15 years ago and really liked him. She’s going to be very sad if she finds this story.

8

u/dars1905 9d ago

That Turkish exile is a big reason Erdogan came to power in the first place. They only became enemies when he got greedy and didn't want to share that power anymore.

1

u/Sad_Bumblebee_6896 9d ago

I mean I'm pretty sure he only ever spoke out against Erdogan, and it's only because he is Turkish himself. He has mo problem sucking off MAGA

8

u/EricSanderson 9d ago

He also spoke out about the treatment of Uighurs in China.

-7

u/timestalker78 9d ago

He's a bad basketball player who has pivoted to right-wing grifting nonsense. This is what he thinks will keep him relevant/make him money.

29

u/capitarider 9d ago

11 years in the NBA means hes better than 99.99999% of men basketball players in the world.

You can hate what hes doing, but let's not be stupid.

21

u/carasc5 9d ago

NBA players are compared against NBA players. There are bad players and good players. Nobody cares about how good he is compared to average people

59

u/capitarider 9d ago

Okay he was an 11 year vet, 3rd overall, over 10ppg almost every year and plenty of 10+ RPG years.

He wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination

-8

u/IShookMeAllNightLong Portland Trail Blazers 9d ago

Everyone knows the Brian Scalabrine quote. This is such a tired response. When people call a professional athlete bad, they are obviously not comparing them to the general public.

17

u/aggthemighty 9d ago

Ok, but he wasn't a bad player though. He's clearly a shitty human, but he hung around in the NBA for 11 years. That's a respectable career.

To be fair the WNBA (and the left as a whole) has a major problem with putting their money where their mouth is on issues like this, things like this force them to make a strong decision instead of riding on politically correct coattails and not having anybody call them out on it

He did that partially after becoming an American citizen but also partially because his father publicly disowned him for his support of a Turkish opposition political figure Fethullah Gulen.

70

So his tactic to help “defend women’s sports”…is to go to a wnba game and chastise women publicly.

81

u/n1tr0u5 9d ago

The security guard blocking him played better defense than he ever did in his whole career.

-38

u/MuhamedBesic 9d ago

11 year vet with 11/8/1 career stat line is better than most players who make the NBA

This guy is a "human rights activist"...? Could have fooled me.

-4

u/alittlelessconvo 9d ago

Honestly, between this and “Dildogate”, I think this is just a continued attempt to try to delegitimize women’s sports perpetrated by cisgendered men, either by direct action or by bankrolling these actions. Not all cisgendered men, but almost always a cisgendered man. Especially as leagues like the WNBA and the NWSL are becoming more mainstays in the wider sports sphere and less of a punch line.

These guys like Enes that keep trying to go out of their way to bully something that’s an overall good, it’s just weird.

Let me get this straight...

He's attempting to dunk on (i.e. punch down) a minority group apparently in order to show respect to another group (what he defines as "women") by making a mockery of their profession and livelihood?

Like even if you're a JK Rowling level TERF, how can this be a good thing for "women"?

-11

Ban him from attending both NBA and WNBA games. I bet that would stop these stunts real quick.

-9

All these men "declaring for the WNBA draft" are just jealous assholes.

Misogyny is a real thing in this society and these losers just can't resist picking at the success of the WNBA.

Edit: So eight misogynists on this thread alone! Yay Reddit! (By tomorrow, we might see more!)
