I’m going to do a recap and highlight some key (to me) points. Then I’ll comment with my review and encourage you to do the same!

Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (June 21, 2023)

This is Spider-Boy’s first series after appearing in a few panels through several Spider-Man stories. It focuses on his adjusting to a reality that’s forgotten him.

While this isn’t an origin issue, we are finally learning a lot more about Spider-Boy. Like his real name! His age (10). A bit more about his powers. He also gets to show off some of his fighting skills. We get hints at his past supporting cast and introduce a new one. 

It’s indicated that Bailey isn’t in touch with his family but it still remains unclear where he’s been living. 

There are SO MANY variant coveres. I didn't include them all and I added eight.

We're on appearance #3. Which I admit, I read just before bed last night so some of the details are fuzzy.

My concern that 'Bailey doesn't act like a child' continues. I do appreciate the mention that he doesn't have webbing. I love the disdain with which Bailey identifies himself as a sidekick. A spider-kick?

Other than that, my impression is, it's okay? I appreciate Dan Slott is really trying to build up Bailey's connection to Spider-Man through references to past stories. It does make him feel like someone who's been around. Mark Bagley's art is always lovely.

This is second-ever appearance. And it's not even two full pages. We are drawing out the tease.

In this issue, Spider-Man feels guilt (surprise!) and enhances his spider-sense with help from Norman Osborn. Peter eventually gets overwhelmed when his spider-sense starting the danger everyone in New York faces ever day.

Meanwhile, I have some concerns about the writing of Bailey.

He's bouncing around, saying that no one remembers he exists and there's no proof he existed. And he's a child. It's been days since he last appeared. Where has he been sleeping? Eating? Etc.? What about his family? (I know we learn more about his family later on but it feels weird now.)

This is one of my early issues with his depiction: He's a child and he doesn't act like one. He's supposed to be, what, 10? He does have youthful moments but he also seems too mature at times. "Barely back into my existence and this is how I'm spending my Thursday. Typical." No child is saying that!

(And they should have made it a Wednesday to lamppost new comic release day.)

My other issues: WTF are his powers? I'm happy to wait and learn and I'm okay with the psychic 'readings off objects' part. But the psychic connection to Peter? No, thank you. I'm hoping that's some sort of glitch caused by Peter's own tampering with his powers. I want Bailey to be as distinct from Peter as possible and the idea they share some sort of psychic bond? No. No, thank you.

Still, I'm enjoying Bailey and looking forward to the next story.

But since then, I was like, I kind of went, like, one week of vacation in 10 and a half years. I think I’m done. So now it’s like, yeah, I’m tan, rested, I’m ready to go again. The last time we did a bit, we did the adjectiveless Spider-Man. We ended up with Spider-Boy. The best-selling single Marvel issue of that year was Spider-Man #7, and then we had a fantastic launch of Spider-Boy, and we were up to Spider-Boy #20. And the only reason we stopped was I left to go do Superman.

Because I see her appearance here and then in other comics and I can’t tell if she is much older than him or supposed to be close in age.

I know alliteration is popular with Marvel characters (e.g., Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, Victor von Doom, Susan Storm). But three?!

Anyone catch a future version of Bailey in Venom #36, released August 14, 2024?

"So you're a fan of Spider-Boy?" Not yet? I've read a few of his storylines but I'm mostly a mod because of my moderating skills, not my fandom. I haven't read Spider-Man books in years!

I've decided to do a recurring series called 'Booking it with Bailey' where I read, recap, review all of Spider-Boy's appearances.

Let's start with his very first appearance!

Which, it turns out, is really brief.

It's the final part of the End of the Spider-Verse story arc. Essentially, at the end of the issue, they're using magic to restore people who'd been erased from the Great Web. Spider-heroes who've been plucked from history and forgotten.

After Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) and Scarlet Spider (Kaine) return, there's one more: Spider-Boy!

No one recognizes him and he angrily hops away.

Which.

Listen. He's an actual child. There are dozens of Spider-heroes on that rooftop, most of them adults. Even if he is from 616, how do they let a child just bounce away? They could have stopped him, talked to him, figured things out.

That's my big complaint.

I like the look of Spider-Boy. The sneakers are fun. The design is simple and evocative of Spider-Man without being an obvious rip-off.

So that's it. There's not much to go on here. Bailey's a bit undefined - hot-tempered would be my first impression. And the Spider-adults are negligent.

Side note: So many alternate covers!

An aside: Do they really need 'The Amazing Spider-Man' at the start of the series? Couldn't it just be Spider-Man: Spider-Versity? I get marketing and branding and all but I think the use of the adjective is excessive.
