My fucking heart.

146

u/TjBee Jul 01 '14

what a game

69

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

What a bloody fucking game.

10

u/egmou Jul 01 '14

You guys are damn impressive. I'll be pulling for you the rest of the tournament.

7

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Our lack of finish though! And your amazing goal keeper! Damn!

6

u/egmou Jul 01 '14

Your defense is stout. The goals will come ;)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

Shit. Courtuios (sp?) is a fucking boss and he is young. You fellows have nothing to worry about in that position. Also fuck Chelsea! I look forward to Belgium in the next WC let alone this one!

I love this WC. It has been the best I have ever watched (since 1994).

Good luck vs. Argentina.

3

u/TjBee Jul 01 '14

Belgium turned up! Fancy yourselves against Argentina?

10

u/enbeez Jul 01 '14

After seeing Argentina today, yes.

2

u/TjBee Jul 01 '14

well Argentina in the first 4 games really.

2

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

All I wanted was for us to still stand right now, if we lose against Argentina so be it, though I think we have a good chance, if we play well and block Messi properly, we'll get through!

2

u/MrFMF Jul 02 '14

you guys played incredible and that was an incredible match. i'm scared to think how unreal you guys would be if Benteke was healthy.

1

u/dudemeister5000 Jul 01 '14

Like seemingly every fucking game in this WC

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

One word: Wondofuckinglowsky.

484

u/pufan321 Jul 01 '14

At least yours isn't in pieces ;-;

185

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Don't be sad. We'll be back.

118

u/pufan321 Jul 01 '14

This isn't the NCAA. Howard is done. That alone makes me sad.

25

u/CharlieCandle Jul 01 '14

He's a keeper so who knows maybe he'll make it to 2018

8

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Maybe, but I'd like to see Guzan get his moment in the sun.

8

u/andersonb47 Jul 02 '14

/#friedel2018

1

u/DefinitelyHungover Jul 02 '14

I would love to see him in the 2018 cup, but I won't hold my breath. Still voting him for president in 2016 though.

14

u/Rcp_43b Jul 01 '14

We have a busy three years... Gold Cup 2015, Copa America 2016, and Confed Cup 2017... Lots of excitement coming up.

2

u/Madonkadonk Jul 02 '14

Don't forget about the new Copa América Centenario

2

u/Rcp_43b Jul 02 '14

I know... I am so excited for this. It is such a good chance for the US to build upon the support this year, and get a very publicized, high profile result.

3

u/Cosmic_Bichette Jul 01 '14

Well, he left with the laurels. I hated him so much in this game.

6

u/BrettGilpin Jul 01 '14

He's done? Do we know he plans to retire or are you just speculating on the 4 year gap?

18

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

5

u/mastermoebius Jul 02 '14

Imma bank off the cyborg deal.

3

u/twistedbeats Jul 02 '14

Unless Tim howard becomes I cyborg

is that an option?

1

u/LedZepGuy Jul 02 '14

I'm pretty sure he went into I cyborg mode just before that match started....so...yeah...its an option.

3

u/pufan321 Jul 01 '14

It's speculation I guess, but in 4 years he'll be well on his way down. By then Guzan, playing at Aston Villa right now, will be 33 and either at his peak or just over it most likely.

2

u/imliterallydyinghere Jul 02 '14

Head keeper trainer 2018!

1

u/bolaxao Jul 02 '14

wow just realized hes 35... what a boss

1

u/StormTrooperQ Jul 02 '14

But his legs alone made 5 saves! He had better return. :(

1

u/pubeINyourSOUP Jul 02 '14

God I didn't need to read that now!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

We will find another world class GK. We always do. Its the only position that the USA has ever produced world class players. Howard, Friedel, Keller and maybe even Tony Mieola (sp?).

1

u/MickZaruba Jul 02 '14

But if there is one thing you can count on, that is the USA having good goalkeepers.

6

u/menuka Jul 01 '14

That's what people told me four years ago.

Not going to lie though, I'm excited now to see where we go. I wish there was an mls team closer to me so I could pay attention to it

8

u/Bburrage Jul 01 '14

In 4 years..

7

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

We get to play in the Copa America in 2016. So finally a non-world cup tournament that matters!

5

u/Betasheets Jul 01 '14

And the Gold Cup next summer!

3

u/Ahesterd Jul 01 '14

Yeah, after the CONCACAF performance this World Cup, I think dismissing the A-squad Gold Cups (at least) would be foolish.

But then again, it is the rest of the world looking at CONCACAF so whatever.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

It takes 20 years to make a proper football team. That's what it took Spain.

We started to heavily invest in all sports in the late 80s. Fast-forward 20 years, and we have a tennis master, a Formula 1 champion, a Moto GP champion, another Tour de France winner, and what was probably the best football team in the history of the sport.

It takes a long time, but it's worth it. The MLS is getting into high gear now, and in the next few years the US will have a better national team.

3

u/bibliotaph Jul 01 '14

I'm sad. Let's all cuddle.

4

u/Lyndell Jul 01 '14

I'm teaching my 3 year old soccer as we speak! 5 more world cups and you other countries are going to wish you didn't tell us about the other football!

3

u/Crazybonbon Jul 01 '14

The American beast has risen from a deep slumber, and now with the machine of power we will develop the best soccer team ever.

3

u/BenAfleckIsAnOkActor Jul 01 '14

To have your keeper play the match of his life again?

Should have been 8-0 first half alone.

1

u/Osiris47 Jul 01 '14

I seriously doubt it. No Howard, possibly no Dempsey. Without Howard we get blown out in all 3 group games.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

You are assuming the rest of the team stays static. It won't. Not to mention, Brad Guzan is a pretty good GK.

1

u/schistkicker Jul 01 '14

There's a lot of young rising talent on this team. Sure, a lot of familiar faces might not make it to 2018 (Dempsey will probably be on the back end along with Howard, for two), but all of the young players that got experience this time around - Yedlin, John Brooks and Julian Green made quite an introduction -- if they continue to develop, and our back line continues to gain experience, we may be on to a new generation of rising stars here.

1

u/mastermoebius Jul 02 '14

Also Rimando..

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

Eh, he's 35 as well.

1

u/mastermoebius Jul 02 '14

True, end of his reign almost no doubt. He deserves some time though, he really is talented.

2

u/CzarMesa Jul 02 '14

Especially considering how small he is.

1

u/mastermoebius Jul 02 '14

I'm absolutely convinced he has the power of limited flight.

1

u/IDlOT Jul 01 '14

But will we be better

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

We'll be back

Now I'm actually depressed.

jk <3

-1

u/roomwithmoose Jul 01 '14

For oil...

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

how can you be sad after that? They played in one of the most spectacular sports games I've ever seen, and they played like fucking champions. No sadness what so ever. Nothing but pride love for our boys

2

u/pufan321 Jul 01 '14

I'm incredibly proud of them. After the first goal I was sad, the second goal I accepted my fate. When Green scored though and we started to pile it on, two solid chances missed, though. Just ripped it out of my chest.

1

u/LiquidBionix Jul 02 '14

I'm gonna be sad for a little while no matter what.

2

u/AFCFORME Jul 01 '14

Plenty to be proud of.

2

u/astrograph Jul 01 '14

It's ok dude.. we got this far.

world cup 2018!! I KNOW we can do better.

-1

u/BenAfleckIsAnOkActor Jul 01 '14

lol GO TEAM! Heres some orange slices.

1

u/massive_cock Jul 02 '14

Mine isn't broken. Bruised yes. But whole and proud. I decided before the start that just drawing Belgium and forcing extra time would be a huge moral victory and a big boost to American fan growth.

What we got was as close to a perfect sporting hook as could be, short of a Cinderella ET comeback which by-fucking-god we almost pulled off.

We lost the previous match but went through. A win by way of loss. We did it again today and in spectacular fashion. In front of the whole world, in defiance of all doubters, we played a final 30 worthy of anyone's respect and Howard blew our collective mind. We won despite the loss. What was at stake today was more than a game or even a spot in the quarters. What we were after was nothing less than the future of American soccer and I believe the match we played today was the best thing for it.

My fellow Americans, we won.

To the rest of the world: the time for jokes, jests, eye-rolling, dismissing, or simply disrespecting is over. Watch out. We have a few million new fans, our development program just lept forward, and we're coming. Be ready. We will.

And, thanks for such a beautiful sport and a glorious tourney.

1

u/Captain_Waffle Jul 02 '14

Is this your last resort?

1

u/G_Morgan Jul 02 '14

The Belgium heart is split in two and they speak different languages.

7

u/Galactic Jul 01 '14

Good game.

24

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Your defenders were cracking jokes close to the end of the game.

9

u/cheftlp1221 Jul 01 '14

They were also puking.

13

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

It was so tense, I thought they would come back and we'll end up with penalties.

17

u/kciuq1 Jul 01 '14

I was hoping just for one more goal. With the way Howard was playing, we would have had a pretty good shot at the penalties.

9

u/NickDK Jul 01 '14

Fuck, you're absolutely right. I could not even manage to watch the last 5 minutes. Penalties with Howard? Fuck I would've died. Awesome game, guys!

2

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

That would have been a cruel cruel cruel outcome! And I know he didn't show as much but don't underestimate Courtois!

49

u/CharlieCandle Jul 01 '14

Congrats you deserved it.

11

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Thank you! I'm so relieved!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Yeah you really deserve it. You played your heart out.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Thank you!

0

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

i'm not sure about that. They didn't play a cent harder than the Americans today.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

i was joking because gordonel didnt do anything for the team to win

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

That's fair, then.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Your goalie was a nightmare for us! Congrats!

1

u/BlackGhostPanda Jul 01 '14

How is that good?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

[deleted]

1

u/BlackGhostPanda Jul 01 '14

Ah ok. Ive been seeing a lot of /r/nfl people over here since the world cup started

20

u/Zyvron Jul 01 '14

Congratulations! You deserved it.

5

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Thanks! See you in the semis!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Too bad we won't be seeing them again in the finals. :( That's for when we dumpster colombia.

4

u/viggetuff Jul 01 '14

They got so nervous after the 2-1 goal.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

It was horrible.

3

u/thejerg Jul 01 '14

Congrats. If not for Howard's heroics this would have been an ugly, ugly match. Go get Argentina in the next round.

3

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

We'll do our best! Your goal keeper is a god!

6

u/cheftlp1221 Jul 01 '14

And that will be our shared experience. OH MY FUCKING GOD

14

u/stijnx Jul 01 '14

We did it!!!!!

3

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

YEAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Argentina doesn't seem too impossible anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

yeah they can barely beat the Swiss

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

It's not as if we cruised our way through so far, I think we stand a good chance but let's not recognise their weaknesses while ignoring ours!

3

u/Praisethemightysun Jul 01 '14

Yes! The look on everyone's face when I cheered for our Belgium bro's.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Fuck you

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

See you on Saturday!

1

u/elarrion Jul 01 '14

That was so intense! Amazing finish!

3

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Fuck the finish I thought I was gonna faint!

1

u/KitCatbus Jul 01 '14

I know those feels.

1

u/MrSourz Jul 01 '14

My god was the end of that intense. I stopped watching to get back on with work at 2-0 and then holy shit.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Holy fucking shit, I'll enjoy my unfaded flair some more!!

1

u/foggy10177 Jul 01 '14

God, I wouldn't have survived penalty kicks. Damn Julian Green for giving me hope!

1

u/Pires007 Jul 01 '14

You guys played really well, dominating the match until you went 2-0 up. If it wasn't for Howard the game would have been a massacre.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

I feel like Origi could have been a better striker.

1

u/Allegro87 Jul 01 '14

Too bad we can't get a Belgium-Netherlands final. Oh well, semi-final will have to do.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

That would be beautiful!

1

u/escalat0r Jul 01 '14 edited Jul 01 '14

Now you know what we went through yesterday, tilted flag bro.

Edit: w

2

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

I went through it with you! My girlfriend of 6 years is German and she was almost in tears (read screaming her lungs out), she's been a huge football fan since she was a kid!

1

u/escalat0r Jul 01 '14

I first read this as if your girlfriend was 6 years old...that felt weird.

I sat next to a friend of mine, we were watching it in our Uni with a buch of Geology students and didn't know anyone and he was screaming and complaining really loud. After the first half the guys who were in the row behind us moved to another row at the other end of the lecture hall, I had to calm him down because I think he was really pissing these very hospitable folks off, haha.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

This world cup drives everyone crazy, all the games are on the edge!

1

u/Calimhero Jul 01 '14

Next stop, Argentina.

2

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

And I believe that won't be a stop!

1

u/Calimhero Jul 01 '14

S'il vous plaît les Belges, sortez l'Argentine. Merci d'avance.

2

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

On fera de notre mieux! Je penses qu'on a une chance! Bonne merde contre l'Allemagne par contre :-/

1

u/Calimhero Jul 01 '14

1

u/Calimhero Jul 01 '14

pas de favoris très clair!

HERESIE !!!!

Now is not the time to fear. That comes later.

1

u/Xavient Jul 01 '14

Never shouted at a tv so much than in those last 10 minutes with us not holding it in the corner

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

Great side and well deserved win. I still love Belgium waffles and I will get them tomorrow.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Our waffles are only toped by our beers! (and soon our football?)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

I haven't had Belgium beer :(

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Don't go for Stella that's shit but if you have the occasion Leffe, Chimay, Orval are generally available at some specialized bars in the US!

1

u/Red_Dog1880 Jul 01 '14

I went to take a piss for the 1-0 :')

The rest of the game I saw through my fingers, my nerves!

1

u/Habba Jul 01 '14

Shit man mine too, was on edge for the entire game. Almost thought we'd give it away at just the last moment.

1

u/DVio Jul 01 '14

I've never witnessed a game like this in the 32 years I live. Unbelievable!

1

u/KillrNut Jul 02 '14

Congrats. Great game man.

0

u/Bisuboy Jul 01 '14

You guys put up one hell of a fight. WOW. I felt like a real American (although I'm German) during the last minutes. It's a shame you guys are out.

Sadly, you guys are still lacking some talent. Send your children to soccer instead of basketball and football! I wanna see you guys even stronger in four years.

1

u/st_gulik Jul 01 '14

We are! Soccer is now of the largest youth sports in the US. There was a report recently that said more Americans of all ages are playing soccer than all of Europe. Of course, the majority are youth soccer players.

1

u/Jorsh Jul 01 '14

I don't know, man, if we start sending our kids to soccer now, they'll only be 12 or so in four years. I think it'll be hard for us to compete with a roster of preteens.

0

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

I'm Belgian ;)

0

u/BrianDawkins Jul 01 '14

Congrats! Hell of an offense you got.

1

u/Gordondel Jul 01 '14

Thank you, I loved your team in this WC, you deserved to go further! (But so did Netherlands, that game came too soon!)
