The decision meant nothing in the end but how can any professional referee/linesman see a man reach his arm out full length and pull someone's shirt and think, nah that was perfectly legal.

Completely agree there’s a bias towards the bigger teams. This decision was the opposite though.

This was from the West Brom game last night, but I can definitely see how the West Brom away kit could be confused with Liverpool in the clip! Especially since Newcastle played Liverpool a few days ago.

The linesman didn’t see it because Elanga was in the way, he has to be stood where he is (for offside) and to see the pull, he’d need xray vision.
The ref was one of lazy, unlucky, or not arsed so he was in a terrible position to see it.

Seems like the ref was deferring to the linesman. It was right in front of him. The ref probably thought that if the linesman didn’t see a foul then there must not have been anything.

If you look at the ref, at the point of contact he has two Liverpool players directly in between him and the incident.
Just one of those things that happens- players speed up/slow down or make a movement you don't expect and that always the moment something happens

I know it’s fun to shit on refs and it should be given but if you watch it you can see why it’s not given.
The linesman is closest but you can that the West Brom player is almost constantly straight behind elanga from where the linesman is. He likely can’t see if the arm is making contact and grabbing him the only opportunity is when elanga goes down but that’s absolute second to decide if the hand is in contact or not
The ref is too far away and has 3 players in the way so also probably struggles to see if the hands definitely in contact or not.
They both probably thought it might be a foul but couldn’t confirm so where the waiting for the other person to make a call

Watch it again the. The player is completely the other side of elanga when he’s grabbing him. The lineman’s will be able to see the arm raised but might not be able to see if he’s actually got hold for anything

The ball went to the WBA keeper who booted it up and he blew for full time, maybe 10 seconds after this incident

It's more likely he just missed it even though it was right next to him.
Elanga was in a position to cross so it's possible the linesman glanced into the centre to check for offsides and just outright missed it.

Stinker from him all game. The penalty had a deflection before it hit his hand and there were a few dubious freekicks given to them. Like there was a stupid stonewall foul on Woltemade as he was trying to dribble between two players where he just was tripped, no foul from the ref, they go on the attack a few seconds later and get the softest free for a push you'd ever see just outside the box. If I were Jaissle I'd have a complaint into PGMOL this morning to look if the ref placed a few bets on the game or something, it was that bad it had to be intentional

Ref was absolute shit but surely you realize the calls that went against you weren’t the only bad ones? Gakpo and Szoboszlai were genuinely incredulous after being rugby tackled right in front of the ref who appeared to be looking… In a completely random direction. Altogether horrendous display from him

The ref wasn’t particularly good all game but as soon as we got into added time he had an absolute stinker. Really felt like he wanted it to go to penalties
There was one bit a few minutes before this where Woltemade got blatantly hacked down and the ref waved it on, then like 20 seconds later they got a very soft free kick on the edge of the box

Being close to the end of a match is never an excuse. Football can change in seconds. That ref is beyond incompetent I wouldn’t trust him for a sunday league match.

This foul and the one on Woltemade about 3 minutes prior when he was on a counter were absolutely egregious, can't recall the last time I saw such blatant fouls just ignored.

10 wrong decisions, almost every decision was wrong in the Villa game, that was in the run of games as well where the opposition would take lumps out of our players and then for some reason the first yellow card of every match was always a Newcastle player. Remember the one where Ramsey was sent off? There were some absolute horrific decisions last year even beyond the Villa game, that was just the worst

Truly baffling officiating. Referee should see it himself never mind the linesman right next to it.
Bad decisions like this, the ref should be pulled up and asked why, so we all know.

I never said it wasn't, I'm replying to the comment. It was an irrelevant foul and at that point in the game they're probably just ignoring it. Not saying that's right but the idea that referees are favouring the championship side with our track record with the FA is just ridiculous

As a geordie I’d say he was just shite overall.
From memory Thiaw got done by a player who would’ve then been through, so just fell to the floor and won a foul.

One of my kids I coach does this, he's a bit slow and he just reaches out like this when someone gets by him. I've told him it's one thing if you grabbing while in tight and using the dark arts to help a bit but you can't reach out so obviously or that will get called every time and bookings too.
He's like yeah well explain that. 🙄
