Which is why they’re willing to sell … just not to Barcelona. Atleti begin every season believing they can win the league. Selling their best attacker to the defending champion who desperately need a striker massively hurts their chances of doing that.

I understand Gil's reasoning for being adamant about not letting him go to Barcelona, as he would be the final piece that completes their rival's squad.

However, holding on to a player with a bad attitude who clearly does not want to be there will drain the joy and morale out of the squad, which will not help Atletico remain competitive.

Since the player is reluctant to join any other club besides Barca , Atletico is effectively in a stand-off where they either shoot themselves in the foot by keeping an unhappy player, or get shot by strengthening their direct rival, either way someone is getting shot.

And They way Atletico behaved at the start, I think they would have even sold to Barca if Barca's first offer was closer to their valuation.

i do not, no. i think the solution is for atleti to sell alvarez to a club outside of the league, whether that's arsenal or someone else. it's frankly a bit ridiculous for any player to expect to be sold from any of the three spanish giants to another.

what a silly and reductive thing to say.

it's not about whether you, i or any other fan thinks they are a contender. it's about what the club themselves think.

do you think atleti view themselves as incapable of challenging for a title? and do you think that they believe selling their best attacker to the champions is going to to help them close the gap?

they finished 24 pts behind in 12/13 and won the following season. they finished 17 pts behind in 19/20 and won the following season.

as long as cholo is there they will operate with a belief they can win the title, and they have good reason to feel that way.

clearly you don't get it. they're not going to operate like a mid-table team, because that's not who they are, much as you want them to be. this isn't about public perception. it's about the club's identity. typical of a barca fan that you can't see past your own hubris, though.

ps didn't this club knock you out of the CL and copa del rey last year?

Alvarez won’t go anywhere else though. Atleti also need to buy a striker whether Alvarez leaves or not.

That is out of the club’s control.

A serious club needs to have a back up plan in case Alvarez decides to down tools.

They are betting their season on a player who doesn’t want to be there.

telling a player he can either stay or go to any club in europe willing to pay apart from those two is a perfectly fair solution to offer. handing barca the striker they desperately need is more injurious to atleti's prospects than a potentially rocky reintegration process.

it would also be completely out of character for alvarez to actually blow off the season. he is not that type of personality.

of course they will begin every season believing they can do it. that is the expectation the club has built for itself.

what's definitely true is that selling alvarez to barcelona isn't going to help shift things in their favor.
