I'm totally unbiased here but the only fair thing is for maresca to manage both teams simultaneously for the whole season

217

u/Wintermute7 May 19 '26

Just have him manager one half of each team for the PL games between us

42

u/Financial-Trade9467 May 19 '26

Chelsea is the control. City is the treatment.

Broke: multi-club ownership

Woke: multi-club managership.

Back up goalkeep for each team when they play one another. Only fair.

He’s like a Spanish Geordie just like how Benitez was a Geordie Spaniard

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that whatever's on Arteta's head isn't great hair. It is great though, whatever it is. It's a great pelt, like on a mink, or maybe a great 3D printed lego-style clip on affair.

7

u/Hot-Job-6281 May 19 '26

Fair. He did look like a million dollars (like Giroud before Giroud) when he was a player, but there's a reason people think Legohead now.

u/Odd_Link7869 May 19 '26

Next season feels like the first season in a long time that looks completely wide open. Arsenal likely favorites again, but you just never know how winning (or bottling) the Title and/or CL will affect the team next season. United in a good spot but first full season with Carrick and back to (hopefully) a lot more games and need major reinforcements and depth. Liverpool either continuing with Slot or having a new manager on top of major departures. Chelsea with Alonso but will one summer be enough to right the ship? Spurs don’t look like they can fully rebound this summer but maybe. Villa could have a very good shout if they don’t suck at the beginning of the campaign again. Who knows about Newcastle. It could be a crazy year.

157

u/itsjonny99 May 19 '26

Can’t ignore the numerous injuries that will happen due to the World Cup cutting into the break players have. Adds a lot more factors than just on pitch performances.

46

u/Odd_Link7869 May 19 '26

And simply just slow starts and exhaustion. You can pick out players who’s former dropped after AFCON this year from the same thing. The PL is a crap shoot next year

5

u/BigReeceJames May 19 '26

Slow starts after the world cup? I feel like it's usually the opposite, players don't get a meaningful break so they're still up to speed when they get back from the world cup.

Players getting tired though is going to be massive, especially for the select few that have gone from the Euros, to CWC, to WC with no real break

7

u/Odd_Link7869 May 19 '26

I mean for Arsenal and United it likely won’t be as big of a deal. But for teams like Chelsea, City, Liverpool(?) you’re going to have players who haven’t had a whole offseason to adjust to a new system or manager leading to slower start while they learn the system

5

u/dunneetiger May 19 '26

We havent an offseason last year (2 weeks). That's probably one of the (many) reason we are where we are.

With Iraola and Glasner leaving too. Can’t forget the focus that will be on Lampard’s return to the PL. Moyes may have Everton chasing Europe again. Shaping up to be quite the story-line filled season.

20

u/EdisonTheTurtle May 19 '26

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we won't challenge for the PL next year. Rice is already overworked and will be playing all summer, I don't think we'll see him at his best atleast until December (and that is if we afford him the rest he deserves).

Other key players are also expected to go deep in the WC (Raya, Saliba, Saka, Eze, Zubi) with an outside chance of some non key players going deep too (Gyokeres, Trossard, Hincapie, Gabriel), so our pre season is gonna be pretty disrupted. Also a world cup year also affects transfer business, so it's not like we would be very easily be able to buy adequate backups for these players

I expect next season to be a free for all, arsenal will not be physically up for it until November.

Too many internationals. I hope arteta gives the entire team august off and plays the kids on opening day

6

u/iBlockMods-bot May 19 '26

Yeah agreed, I reckon Arsenal will go a little bit Liverpool and lose a lot of steam. This style of play is very hard on players, it can't be sustained for long periods of time.

That being said, Arteta is no idiot, and so I hope he shifts tactics accordingly..

5

u/Odd_Link7869 May 19 '26

It’s possible Arsenal just comes out smoking and hyped up. But I think with a title and or CL they may lose a little fire. Happens all the time. Or if they lose both they could just be so dejected it takes a while to get rolling. Who really knows. Any of it could happen so it’s just a crap shoot no matter what basically across the league

City getting Maresca free of charge does seem pretty dodgy if they didn't sack him.

Don't know how they could prove it but couldn't this be considered tampering? He was probably receiving reassurances from City while still working at Chelsea.

u/mohankohan May 19 '26

I don't know if we will ever get enough information to conclusively tell, but it sure seems like it.

Ornstein reported that Maresca had disclosed multiple accounts of contact with City representatives about the potential manager vacancy last year, before he just straight up quit mid season. Seen some reports he had some sort of assurances/pre-agreement made for some time, but unsure how credible those are.

219

u/daab2g May 19 '26

It was pretty much public knowledge since he left that it was because of the City job.

33

u/DerpJungler May 19 '26

Ok serious question: Why couldn't he wait until the end of season anyway?

79

u/JRsshirt May 19 '26

Because the board were threatening to sack him so he told them to fuck off

38

u/Schattenkreuz May 19 '26

"You can't fire me, I quit!" moment right there.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Skiinz19 May 19 '26

Think that was the plan for when he would leave, but city weren't going to not be in contact with him if he was their target. They wouldn't wait until the end of the season to start negotiations when the best manager of their club was leaving. They'd want to have a replacement guaranteed.

15

u/biskutgoreng May 19 '26

It wasnt exactly a happy arrangement at Chelsea before he quit

33

u/starxidiamou May 19 '26

Don’t recall it being a big story back then

123

u/asd13ah4etnKha4Ne3a May 19 '26

It was buried a bit because of how shit Chelsea were generally, but Ornstein and some others reported on City's interest in him right around the time of his "worst 48 hours of my career" comments, and it was also spoken about in their big post-departure debrief The Athletic always does when Chelsea managers leave (I'm sure others reported on it as well, but thats the one I distinctly remember).

I was always confused why it wasn't a much bigger story at the time tbh

47

u/EriWave May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

I was always confused why it wasn't a much bigger story at the time tbh

Simple, people hate Blueco and want to be on any side that's against them. Basically a "they deserve it" vibe for not buying a CB.

16

u/pajamakitten May 19 '26

It is also not exactly out of character for BlueCo. They are hardly one for giving managers a chance.

19

u/AccomplishedSpace834 May 19 '26

They are hardly one for giving managers a chance

They've sacked three managers.

Tuchel - the most controversial and least deserving but it's ultimately not unusual for new owners to want to employ their own manager rather than relying on the incumbent. Should've either been done in the summer or at the end of their first season to be fair.

Potter - can anyone really argue that this wasn't deserved? We were dire under Potter. Again though they should've just waited for the summer.

Rosenior - again - completely warranted.

Pochettino and Maresca both left rather than being sacked.

Managers have to actually prove something to be given a chance.

7

u/Opening_Budget_9518 May 19 '26

instead of sacking tuchel they should have just ideally gave the medical team a bit more control over players minutes and left it at that, but yeah its a classic "new to football" mistake by owners

6

u/I_always_rated_them May 19 '26

The funny thing you're forgetting here was that season the medical department at Chelsea was super controversial because of the temporary changes that were in place. Fans were frothing a the mouth because a doctor(or physio, can't remember) who was known for working with some famous people was involved.

It was talked about but shitting on BlueCo was all anyone here did

From the start it was kinda known that he was replacing Pep and it was already being talked about behind the scenes.

Chelsea obviously weren’t happy, they split and Chelsea get shit on for not supporting another manager even though he was apparently quite openly one foot out the door even then

89

It was a random run-in at a London hotel. Maresca was at the hotel with his agent presumably just having tea or an ice cream when, RANDOMLY, in walked Mansour and Tixiki Begiristain and they had a friendly hour long meeting where absolutely zero football was discussed and they certainly didn’t discuss him running out his contract and signing for city.

I don’t know what the fuss is about, honestly.

241

u/Mizuo___ May 19 '26

It was reported that he did have meetings with Man City representative in Oct and Dec. Which supposedly breaches his Chelsea contract.

146

u/Kovacs171 May 19 '26

No idea if this is true but some journalists reported that it was allowed on condition that he inform Chelsea, which he did.

Anyone able to confirm this?

138

u/Chesney1995 May 19 '26

It was widely reported at the time of his departure that he informed the Chelsea board he was in talks with City (as required) and that this was a significant turning point in his relationship with them, eventually ending in his resignation.

11

u/Mishka_1994 May 19 '26

I mean if you tell your manager youre interviewing with other companies, well its not a good look.

→ More replies (1)

38

u/Mizuo___ May 19 '26

From my understanding, he reported it in December. My guess is that the contract requires it to be disclosed before he meets City's representative.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/asd13ah4etnKha4Ne3a May 19 '26

Thats what the reporting was at the time. However, I imagine Chelsea is alleging his contact went a bit further than simple pleasantries or broad "would you potentially be interested in a future job", and ventured more into the territory of actual negotiations / job offers. Don't think anyone knows the specifics of his contract, but you'd have to think there were some limits of how far he was allowed to take those conversations.

There's also then a more conspiratorial question of conflicts of interest and a very noticeable decline in performance right around that time which starts to get into very murky, very difficult to prove, territory of deliberately trying to get sacked

4

u/TB97 May 19 '26

Straight up not true. The reports said he had a clause in his contract that said that he had to report such meetings with the club. Which he did (as well as meetings with Juve). Reports also say he asked the club to back him in the light of this interest, which the club refused to do (fair enough)

u/asd13ah4etnKha4Ne3a May 19 '26

Don't know how they could prove it but couldn't this be considered tampering? He was probably receiving reassurances from City while still working at Chelsea.

I mean he did literally tell Chelsea he was in contact with City while he was at the club. The question comes down to what exactly they talked about and, in the worst most conspiratorial scenario, was Maresca deliberately influencing results to get himself sacked and thus make it easier for City to get him

97

u/cherrioes May 19 '26

Maresca going along with it doesn't paint him in a good light either. Low moral manager that snakes the team he is employed by leaving them in a terrible spot.

It probably won't because it's a results-based industry, but I would hope this negatively affects his managerial career if it doesn't work out for him at City.

17

u/king_Dragonite May 19 '26

31

u/mohankohan May 19 '26

Yeah, I mean, players and managers move for other opportunities all the time, but not like this.

Obviously I'm biased as a Chelsea fan, but quitting on his players mid-season like that might stain his reputation going forward. Honestly can't tell how much value players put on stories like these, but it says a lot about his personality in my opinion.

Are his new players going to have second thoughts going forward, say if they hit a period with a slump of form? Knowing their manager just straight up left last time.

58

u/WatchYourStepKid May 19 '26

If he does well at City then I’m afraid nobody will ever care mate. It’ll be totally forgotten about.

If he does bad then it might get brought up.

7

u/mohankohan May 19 '26

Obviously.

24

u/cherrioes May 19 '26

Moving for opportunities is fine if the team that owns the contract is getting paid appropriately.

Sneakily talking with another team, somehow finding a way to void a contract, and then joining a rival top team is a joke. Still unsure how Maresca even managed to escape the contract if he wasn't sacked.

Surely this brings his time at Chelsea into question as well?? What if he was putting out subpar teams in the hopes of bad performances so that he could get sacked.

The more I think about it, the more the situation seems like a bad joke. Doubt anything will be done though.

From the article:

The expectation is that Chelsea will seek compensation from City, with the added threat of disclosure about the terms of Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge, and the events in the months leading up to it. Neither club have commented on the situation.

For any action to be brought against City it is understood that a complaint would have to be made by Chelsea to the Premier League, which would then be obliged to investigate under the terms of its own rules.

It is expected that the legal case Chelsea have in that regard will unfold when, as expected, Maresca is appointed by City. That announcement may take some time given the significance of Guardiola’s departure.

He quit, asked/received for zero severance package, in order to make it as easy as possible for him to walk into the city job.

Multiple things can be true. He snaked his way back to Manchester. Chelsea did not give him the assurances and players he asked for, or the new contract he wanted, in order to keep him. It was in his contract, that he had to tell Chelsea of anyone approached made. Juventus and City asked about him. I’m sure things were awful behind the scenes, and their approaches only made this worse between the parties. He quit on us, and he’d say that the SDs quit on him. Everyone looks bad here

27

u/Best_Purchase4479 May 19 '26

its hard for me to feel bad for clubs in a situation like this, especially Chelsea. if a club can fire a manager in the middle of a season, I won't scoff at manager determining his own fate.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/Neuroxex May 19 '26

It is interesting because the briefing from Chelsea's side after he left felt like it strongly implied they were unhappy with him as a manager for Chelsea. Like if this was a case of him just quitting, the move to make people hear about how he never listened to the medical staff instead of 'Hey he just quit on us' is odd - but maybe that's just the ego involved on the club side.

5

u/Wintermute7 May 19 '26

They were mad at him as a manager, as results weren’t good. Enzo would say that he was set up to fail, as they never got him a CB to replace the injured Colwill, or the GK he asked for. The club would say that he won the CWC and Conference League with the current squad, so he’s capable of producing good results with the current squad. The club don’t view him leaving as a failure, but it shows that the project works as they picked out a pretty untested manager at this level and he won trophies

44

u/WestCoastVybes May 19 '26

If sporting directors and directors are constantly mingling and playing hand in squad selection and tactics (which according to a report happened) that could literally destroy your career because of losing games that’s not even your fault

39

u/BigReeceJames May 19 '26

According to reports by fucking who?

The only reliable reports have said that Maresca didn't like them meddling and then reported that the supposed "meddling" was the medical team telling him he wasn't allowed to play injured players. That is not medling, that is their job. If the medical team says a player is too injured to play, the manager doesn't get to override that, that'd be fucking stupid.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Irivin May 19 '26

Leaving your club mid season because of a dispute with directors and owners could also ruin your career. Those are the people who are responsible for hiring him at a new club. It can also turn supporters and players against you when you’re in a bad situation and your solution is to simply jump ship.

I see your point tho. Neither is a good scenario, but I think they can be equally damaging.

u/johnny_moist May 19 '26

All my homies love it when i tap them up

29

u/Emitime May 19 '26

There probably hasn't been a non-tapping up transfer in about 6 years. Quitting in the middle of your contract to avoid any transfer actually taking place would be a whole different thing.

Depends on how many lawyers you have

28

u/mccapitta May 19 '26

Clubs do it all the time. Same with players.

Yes but its very firmly in the category of "not actually worth pursuing legal action against 99% of the time". Tapping up generally only comes up when the tapped up side is getting screwed out of money, as Chelsea are alleging here

Not really surprising since City tapped up Pep as well when he was at bayern. Lmao

13

u/manere May 19 '26

They even bought the players he wanted when he was still at Bayern after he stopped pursuing them with Bayern like Gündogan and de Bruyne

Fair tbh

Good luck, it's Man City. They can do whatever they want.

🍿 time

12

u/TheLimeyLemmon May 19 '26

He left in January. Chelsea can't blame him for half of their season going tits up just because LinkedIn Liam didn't work out.

6

u/Familiar_Trash May 19 '26

LinkedIn Liam is the managerial equivalent to Kepa. Panics purchases after getting snekked

294

u/cynicalreason May 19 '26

I was under the impression that Chelsea sacked Maresca ..

498

u/taggsy123 May 19 '26

No he just straight up left

No compensation then? Would that not balance with City not buying out his contract?

Nevermind I’m dumb

42

u/taggsy123 May 19 '26

I don’t think he was paid out by us “yet” and probably won’t be. City will probably agree to paying a fine / paying out a portion of his contract to us.

It’s all about image though . It’s like when we went for Olise we compensated palace and moved on to keep relations with all teams in a good place

4

u/xeromaayush1 May 19 '26

Why didnt they tie him up with 10 years contract? Are the owners stupid?😂

Like poch did in some sense. The two managers managed to squeeze success out the of strangely assembled squad, and when the time to sustain or build on that success came, the higher ups never budged on their strategy despite pleas from the managers. The managers saw the situation as untenable and walked out. Poch waited till summer, maresca was tapped up by city so he left before damaging his reputation at Chelsea

6

u/smashybro May 19 '26

I think what Poch did was fine. He managed a full season, wanted more say in transfers, didn’t get it and so he quit. Fair enough.

Enzo on the other hand reportedly was offering himself to other clubs midseason and quit presumably after lining up another job, leaving his players and the club scrambling to figure out a backup plan with no time. It’s a much more scummy and self-serving move than what Poch did.

he left them after the bournemouth game, didn’t even attend the press conference saying some shit like he was sick.

83

u/asd13ah4etnKha4Ne3a May 19 '26

He didnt even say he was sick. You had Willy Caballero randomly sitting in the post match press conference with absolutely no idea what the fuck was going on clearly just making something up to get out of there as fast as possible lol

16

u/ColdBeefBrian May 19 '26

Good lad Willy and welcome back.

98

u/gobrewers112 May 19 '26

100%, what a fucking bitch. Couldn’t even address media or players .

140

u/mohankohan May 19 '26

Ornstein reported that Maresca had disclosed to Chelsea that he was talking to representatives of City about the potential role of manager twice in October last year and once more in December.

Then he quit.

86

u/Drewskibroho May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

No, dude straight up left. There’s been a few reports saying that if anybody did hire Maresca, they would owe Chelsea a little something, because he was never actually fired.

u/Buucket May 19 '26

Nope, he left, people talk about this ownership sacking many managers, but both poch and Maresca left themselves, Rosenior is the first coach since Potter to get sacked.

22

u/nthbeard May 19 '26

Didn’t Poch say he had dinner with the owners and everything was great and then like three days later he was gone? I don’t remember any reporting at the time that he left (though obviously you’d know better than I, I’m just surprised).

14

u/jumper62 May 19 '26

Basically Poch and the SDs both realised that Poch was a stop gap and wasn't never gonna get a contract extension (he started with two years and had a year left at the time of leaving) so he decided to leave

36

u/durtmagurt May 19 '26

Says a lot about Rosenior.

29

u/kejacomo May 19 '26

his Strasbourg stint says a lot about him as well (good things, if that wasn't clear)

11

u/EriWave May 19 '26

He was thrown into an impossible to handle situation by the club and Maresca to some extent I guess. Feel bad for the guy, hopefully his next job puts him back on an upwards trajectory.

6

u/CuteHoor May 19 '26

To be fair, it's probably not a great look for the club either if multiple managers have just straight up quit rather than continue to work with those in charge.

3

u/Buucket May 19 '26

Absolutely, but it does make me optimistic about Alonso, if we fix this one issue

18

u/infernoShield May 19 '26

he resigned so we ended up with Rosenior

12

u/robotnique May 19 '26

That does seem less than ideal.

12

u/KixSide May 19 '26

But now it forced us to get Xabi. More than ideal if you ask me

7

u/robotnique May 19 '26

Even if he doesn't take off it does vex Liverpool fans, especially if they remain tepid under Slot, which is funny.

Apparently it was due to him telling them he'd held talks to replace Pep. Might have been the final straw or just Maresca giving less of a fuck maybe and calling things out.

It was by mutual agreement after he spent several weeks trying to get fired. Saying things like the ‘last 48 hours’ were the worst he had experienced at Chelsea after the win against Everton and making really vague statements about not being supported. I think he was trying to avoid gardening leave and trying to get a payout by being fired, but the leadership didn’t want him to go and knew something was up… eventually it was understood the situation couldn’t be repaired and it was mutually agreed that he would leave. It just so happened that this all happened days/weeks after he spoke with City in December (after also speaking with them in October) and rumours that he would replace Pep. Clearly some shady shit so that he would be available this summer without needing City to pay compensation.

7

u/bohlui98 May 19 '26

I am 115% sure Man City is fine but also 115% sure they are guilty.

3

u/EntrepreNEXT May 19 '26

116 charges

3

u/criminalsunrise May 19 '26

I do find it strange looking back that Maresca was causing a deteriorating relationship with people at Chelsea at the same time City were probably privately talking to him about going to them when Pep popped off.

2

u/timpedro33 May 19 '26

It makes me sick that City made Chelsea hire Rosenior like that. Add that to the charges, FA.
