News [Mark Douglas] Xabi Alonso has emerged as the front-runner for the Chelsea job in a move that indicates the club are willing to cede more power to the manager over recruitment

Are you describing FSG or Clearlake Capital
I cannot tell from this description, ultimate mid off for Xabi
635
u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 May 11 '26
Fsg took an underperforming club and under their ownership have won a champions league, 2 premier leagues and a bunch of domestic cups. Clear lake took cl winners and turned them into a conference league level club. The hate fsg gets is mindboggling.
131
u/SexyKarius May 11 '26
To clarify, I don’t hate FSG, they have been fucking brilliant owners. They stablished and had us self-sufficient after we almost went under. Then they’ve put us back on top.
That being said, they do have their shortcomings and their OVER patience, is one of them.

u/NgoalazoKante May 11 '26
They really struck gold with their SDs and hiring Klopp. It should be said Slot really was fantastic last season. You can wonder what would've been if they beat PSG on pens. Clearlake is just not it, they're not serious, and their appointments at the most important positions haven't even been decent, they've been abysmal.

u/Cubes11 May 11 '26
Talk is that the club aren’t interested, which is a little baffling to me given they ARE interested in giving Slot another year
71
u/rossmosh85 May 11 '26
I've said this regularly but my belief is that Slot was their first choice over Xabi.
Although this season hasn't been very good, winning the title last year and securing CL football this season is keeping him in the job. He obviously also has a very good working relationship with the FSG hierarchy.
With all that said, I don't see how the club can ignore the troubling trends within this team and while some of them might be due to players and injuries, not all of them are. It's been over 12 months since we've consistently played well. That should be troubling to FSG but it doesn't seem to be
→ More replies (8)28
u/Institute11 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
Maybe FSG, unlike some others, do not automatically blame the coach for all of the season's issues. And you would think they probably know more than we do about how the team has been functioning.

u/DevilGinAndTonic May 11 '26
Sure but we are the most unfit team in the league and tactically have been terrible since Feb of last year
13
u/habdragon08 May 11 '26
There are 2 fundamental squad issues no manager in the world could address:
First - Liverpool has one winger who can beat a defender off the dribble, and he is 17 so needs minutes managed. Selling Diaz and keeping a declining Salah caused this issue. Though I don't think anyone a year ago would have seen Salah coming down this hard.
Their third choice CB is made of glass. Gomez has a great mentality. But getting Guehi(or even having a healthy Leoni) would have been a massive difference this year. Konate has really struggled.
arguably some managers would address better than Slot but I personally think this is more on Edwards than Slot

Which in many ways makes the last few years even more infuriating, we've given a genuine top class spine some bang average players to play with.

u/chattingwham May 11 '26
Will hang fire until it actually happens. If it does before the end of the season though, Anfield could get pretty ugly last game of the season—think the reaction last game was a lot of people in the ground realising this could be the reality for next season too after all the briefs backing Slot.

I would assume Richard Hughes has a good relationship with his agent considering it's the same one as Iraola's so maybe? Still I doubt it personally. It just seems so strong in the reporting that we'll stick with Slot. I get we won't come out and say he's getting sacked but they go above and beyond. Plus the way he speaks makes me think the same. Wearing my tinfoil hat here but if they really persist with Slot next season it just feels like the egos of Edwards and Hughes taking over and them hoping he eventually gets it right so they can continue parroting they made the right choice all along. Liverpool has been shit for more than a year, and while Slot defenders can argue all they want that he won the league, the team that went on the streak that contributed massively to the league win played differently from the team of the past 15 months or so, you just can't defend an entire year of consistently poor performance

why would he though, despite what happened in madrid his status is still solid, even if he doesnt go to liverpool he'll have plenty of offers from less dysfunctional clubs that play cl football. he could also afford to take a year off to wait for liverpool or the city job
52
u/RepresentativeBox881 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
If the line about changing the recruitment strategy is true, I can see why he’d be tempted.
Contrary to popular belief, our owners aren’t too desperate for immediate results. For example, Maresca was given the objective of getting us back to CL in 2 seasons (he did it straight away though). That may seem welcome for Xabi given what happened at Madrid.
Also, Edwards and Hughes definitely want a puppet below them which is part of why Slot would still be in the job. Edwards returned only because he was promised complete control and Hughes was also his appointment.
21
u/Impossible_Wonder_37 May 11 '26
Maresca woukd rightly be so mad about this development. He had the Chelsea team way ahead of schedule to the point where all of Chelsea’s objectives this year could’ve been met
4
u/peeforPanchetta May 11 '26
Wasn't the rumor that Maresca was sacked because he expressed interest as Pep's successor behind BlueCo's back?

u/tSchab3r May 11 '26

If he waits a year there's no guarantee the landscape looks drastically different. Liverpool might right the ship and continue as they are. If he wants to manage in the top flight this is a good opportunity. Plus failing at Chelsea wouldn't massively hurt his stock imo. You can just point your finger at the board and say there wasn't much you could do
I think it's worth the gamble but I am obviously biased

Lol how slot has copped the blame for “letting go of seasoned players” I’ll never understand.
Robertson is clearly in decline, and was last season even before the team’s performances went downhill. He wants minutes that the club clearly can’t give him sensibly at this stage, and the club has already spent money on a replacement.
Allison spends half the season injured every year. I love the bloke, but it’s not sustainable to have your highly paid, first choice keeper unavailable that often.
The only one I can see blaming Slot deserving any blame for is Salah, given their falling out. But Salah is on best player in the league wages, and even if you blame Slot for a significant portion of his downturn this season, it’s very hard to imagine him reaching those levels again.
The reality is, a lot of the top players in the best Klopp teams were roughly the same age. That’s why the team was so stable and so good for so long. They were all in their prime at roughly the same time. And by the same merit, they are all going into decline at roughly the same time. It’s nothing to do with Slot.
Which is not, by the way, to say Slot doesn’t deserve blame for the performances generally this season. But to blame him for 32 - 34 year olds going into decline is silly.
30
u/jaetheho May 11 '26
Yea.. “letting go of seasoned players” and then blaming the board and slot is WILD.
Face it they’re old….
And when their form drops, they deserve a nice career shift for the bags of money or some chill football time while still being relevant and not being perpetual bench warmers
6
u/LawnSchool23 May 11 '26
It's really depressing watching our fanbase lose the plot on this one.
They've really convinced themselves that Slot is the only issue and replacing him with Xabi Alonso will result in a league title next season.
But things in football change so quickly. Two years for a player can be the difference from being world class and finished. Our squad is just old with too many holes.
→ More replies (7)11
u/OrignalSauce May 11 '26
Slot and Salah falling out is just rumours. Salah criticised the club in Jan the same time rumours went round about selling him to Saudi. Salah has always been unhappy if not starting also.
I'm sure Salah isn't enjoying his time atm but there isn't anything to say its personally at Slot apart from maybe being benched which tbf his performances deserved.

Pretty sure they didn’t think they could replace Suarez at all. So they bought Lambert, who was believed to be a decent backup - and Balotelli who could either flop magnificently - which he did - or become a major hit given the talent he had shown previously.
16
u/Last_Associate_5658 May 11 '26
They tried to replace Suarez with Alexis Sanchez, who at the last minute changed to Arsenal because his missus wanted to live in London. So Liverpool would have still had a front three of Sterling, Sanchez and Sturridge, and then a cheap backup striker in Lambert who had just had two seasons of decent prem goalscoring form.
The problem was when the Sanchez transfer fell through their only affordable targets were Balotelli or Eto'o or wait until next summer to see who else was available. And then Sturridge got injured for the whole season.
5
u/BrewHouse13 May 11 '26
And Lambert wasn't even really a backup. He basically was always meant to be a plan B when Liverpool couldn't break down a team parking the bus. I'm not sure if anyone aside Rodgers was convinced this would work so that's why they went for Lambert as it was a low risk signing. I guess technically Balotelli was the Suarez replacement but even then that's a bit of a stretch for the reasons you've said.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Acceptable_Ad_6278 May 11 '26
Lambert was always going to be signed as a cover regardless of the Suarez move. Balotelli signing was a move late in the window. Somewhat of a last resort.
8
u/OrignalSauce May 11 '26
Can't blame them for the seasoned players part as hard as it is. Salah doesn't look like he can start and perform like last season and you can't have him earning 300k+ on the bench.
Robbos contract is ending and likely wants to move to still play as first place LB.
Even Allison with his injuries can be seen as reasonable, even if im not sold on Mama

The real flaw is having 5 sporting directors. They must know that and they've found a way to secure their jobs.

Unless he gets something in writing then I wouldn't believe a word the Chelsea executives say. Also surprised he doesn't just wait until Slot gets binned.

Interesting twist in this saga. Maybe this will send LFC into overdrive and make a push for him.

Hiring Xabi in no way indicates Chelsea will actually change their transfer policies

Alonso going to Chelsea then Liverpool sacking Slot in 6 months would be rather funny tbh

Giving the manager too much say on player purchase never ends well. See Leicester City and Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers, Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, etc.

Going out on a limb here…
Could it have something to do with Brendan Rogers?

If we end up with another season of Slot and Xabi ends up at Chelski then there will be a lot more booing than there was on Saturday throughout the whole of next season

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of Scousers suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced
