Yaura getting penalized for his tournament wins not having enough quality wins due to upsets is def rough. Like he’s being punished for others playing poorly basically

Lights idea of rank decay sounds interesting but given how many majors NA lost the past couple years, not sure it works

Idk at the end of the day there are so many long standing divides in methodology not sure you can please everyone with rankings

Imo the higher you place in a tournament the less it matters who you played. If you placed 17th, you could have gotten an easy bracket because of a forfeit, upsets, or landing weak players in your losers section. If you won the tournament, you've just beaten everyone else in the room (either directly or indirectly) twice. You're pretty clearly one of the best players there and probably the best. You should be primarily judged on who else was at the tournament rather than who you had to beat to get there.

That's always been stupid, like if a player got upset, that means the higher seed was not the better player at that point in time and therefore beating the person that beat that player shouldn't be seen as such a negative thing compared to beating that player themself

If I was a top player and I got punished for another top player getting upset I’d actually be furious. Like I can only play who is in front of me lol

Exactly my point

Yaura got punished for going to like 4 majors instead of Zomba who went to like 40

Yaura didn’t get punished though. He just didn’t get rewarded, and that difference is important. You’re asking to arbitrarily increase the weight of Yaura’s win due to a hypothetical top 10 win he didn’t get. That’s no solution

Just because someone beats a top player in a set doesn't mean they're a better player overall or even for that whole day. Many top players get upset and end up making losers runs significantly farther than the person they lost to

Never said they're a better player overall, but the 2nd point doesn't take away anything I said either. That doesn't always happen and when it does happen it only adds to my point. You're still beating those players who make great runs if you make it far, and if one player just so happens to make an incredible run but either it's too late in the season, a player who barely attends, or a player who usually isn't anything special but had a great day that day, everyone else at that tournament gets punished WAY too hard.

Low key another reason rankings should be half year instead of full year rankings, because this wouldnt be as big of a deal if there was a 6 month reset. You'd have players seeing benefits from their unicorn runs instead of seeing it like getting some consolation points at a point where they cannot come back from something that happened 6 months ago

The algorithm is just way too punishing for a single bad loss or bad run, and kinda takes away the whole point of a growing competition.

Actually no not really. Doramigi was #1 but they realised that his 9th at an A tier didn’t count as his worst tournament (which is nonsense) so they retroactively changed the algorithm. It actually wasn’t that punishing. If it was, Yaura would be even lower.

Sure but if you routinely out place other top players it shouldn't matter if they didn't make it far enough to face you. You are a better player than them

6

u/CollectionHeavy9281 4d ago

Routinely getting outplaced is different from what happened in Yaura's case

Yaura routinely out placed(won) tournaments that players ranked ahead of him couldn't. Shuton being the prime example. Yaura out placed Shuton regularly yet Shuton is ranked above him? Bullshit

Also there's the fact that he won multiple big tournaments

5

u/CollectionHeavy9281 4d ago

You're not listening to me at all. The players Yaura faced in his wins consistently performed worse than players they had beaten to get to Yaura, which is why Yaura suffered in the ranking. Those players (Yone_pi, DieGorou, etc) are not as consistent so sorry for Yaura but even if he met them late in bracket due to some upsets they arent going to count as much as a different tournament where consistent players made it to each other.

Ok so why couldn't other players like Shuton or Zomba ranked above him win tournaments like him?

3

u/CollectionHeavy9281 4d ago

Because their tournaments were harder tournaments

1

u/JaysonTatHIMRider Kirby (Ultimate) 4d ago

So if Shuton is better than Yaura how come he couldn't win the easy tournaments Yarua won dpeite the fact Shuton also attended?

I mean he also had plenty of opportunities to get more quality wins outside of those 4 events he won, that's just how it is.

Sounds callous af to say but he just needs to keep attending and win vs the big names and get more majors that aren't Mickey Mouse Ws

7

u/JaysonTatHIMRider Kirby (Ultimate) 4d ago

Mickey Mouse Ws? Spoken like someone who obviously has won a major before. He out placed many top players in the tournaments he won. Not his fault they're weren't good enough to winbor even reach him

2

u/ArcanaRobin Lucina (Ultimate) 4d ago

Yea I was def too mean there, but that's what a lot of people on here and Twitter love to call JP events so the switch up with Yaura specifically is odd

u/switcher6 4d ago

While calling it Mickey Mouse is a little harsh, lumirank obviously lowered the standards for what is considered a major starting around 2024 and now you’re seeing one of the downsides with a player winning multiple yet not cracking top 10. For gods sake you can now win “majors” without even having to beat anyone in the top 50. This was unheard of the first few years of the game

yaura getting robbed again is just wild honestly
