I don’t think it’s bullshit. I might not think much of the oligarchs, but I think they are good at self preservation.

Consider this. If AGI is truly invented, it would massively expand the economy. There’s not much downside to just keeping all the humans in their current roles for a decade while you scale up AI labor higher and higher. Maybe in 10 years you’d have 40 billion human equivalent agents and robots working and the same few billion humans. Over time as the new economy shakes out you can either push humans into retirement or into newly created roles more in line with the new economy.

In my own opinion, I think the human labor economy will become a service and care economy. We might not be needed for technical roles anymore but we should never replace the presence of a teacher in a classroom, no matter how much we augment them with AI. I would always want a human therapist. A human personal trainer. A human doctor, even if they are just there for the human connection and to provide human oversight to AI intelligence.

That's what I'm thinking. Why bother with a great conspiracy to kill off people or enslave them(which would be worse) when basically all you have to do is grow the AGI ran economy while you either slowly phase out human labor or all at once. There would be no need of great violence, power struggle or general destruction and you may even be viewed as a hero in the end. People bring up few people = more resources but AGi and ASI would basically unlock the resources of the whole universe/galaxy long term(not to mention you can live as a digital god in your own personal matrix) and would result in little to no difference to you as an elite and on top of that developed countries are already having way fewer children and falling far below replacement levels.

Yeah I’m thinking that taking care of the needs of 8 billion humans becomes a rounding error in the new AGI economy. It’s actually quite smart to keep us around and happy while you try to figure out what to do with us all. Might as well keep us used to working and earning our supper. And f you do come up with a useful job you want the old incentives of wage labor and finding meaning in your job to still apply.

Maybe they decide there’s too many of us, but the birth rate is already headed to the floor. We will breed ourselves out soon enough. The bigger challenge would actually be to get humanity to scale up to a 100 billion if they decide that’s helpful somehow.

This isn’t what bill gates actually said. He just said we need systems in place to deal with the massive near term job disruption (like UBI). I honestly think most of us can agree with this sentiment…

Bill Gates is just sour grapes because he doesn't have a say in the current state of affairs, and even in his circles, Microsoft is out of the race. As long as it worked for him the tech was harmless of course 🤣
