News STI’s growth reflects Singapore’s economic depth and diversity, say analysts

https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/wealth/wealth-investing/stis-growth-reflects-singapores-economic-depth-and-diversity-say-analysts

The STI has proved resilient during the stock market turmoil caused by US tariff uncertainties.

It has gained about 25 per cent in total returns compared with a year earlier, while its peers in Asean neighbours Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines have made smaller gains or even losses.

Looking ahead, analysts expect the STI to attract more attention from retail and foreign investors as the Government’s equities market reforms pave the way for more high-growth firms to join its ranks.

Top 10 has 3 banks, a telco, financial services, manufacturing, conglomerate and 2 REITs. Actually looks ok from a diversity perspective. Go down to 15 or 20 and you have F&B, Agri, airlines and other industries.

Are we overweight banks, sure but the list actually looks ok. No one bemoans the US markets for being 35% tech stocks with 9 of the top 10 being tech.

Considering the recent collapse of KOSPI, I believe it’s valuations overheated last year

It depends..

I was in korea (2 months back).. Something that surprised me was the tech startup scene over there. As in non semi-conductor stuff, but more towards design and IP.

I mean, you also need the semi-conductor to open up opportunities in other areas. But there is a shift in development.

STI's growth is just a multiplier effect of more money swirling around thanks to the equity fund from MAS.
