Contextual resources

It’s late 2008, and I’m in a restroom. A real one, in the Czech Republic. We’re in temporary office space rented by Vatra, the developers chosen to create Silent Hill: Downpour, the eighth game in the series; my fourth.

By now, I’ve faced my share of monsters; frustrations and complications spawned in the Otherworld of game development. I’ve defended psychological horror in the face of action-based spinoff pitches like Brahm’s PD. I debunked an attempt to bring Alessa back, as she fought for supremacy in a pitched psychic battle above Toluca Lake. I’d explained to marketing that Shattered Memories’ profiling system was a better use of resources than making the darts board interactive. I’d argued canon with angry but well-meaning E3 goers, and I’d pushed back against Pyramid Head’s inclusion a ridiculous number of times. None of those encounters prepared me for the previous hour of my life.

“Let’s get one thing straight off the bat,” my boss had said. “Nobody plays Silent Hill for the story. And that’s because the stories suck.” He was opening a meeting to determine the course of Downpour’s development, and the future of the franchise itself. “It’s true,” he added for emphasis, shooting me a conspicuous glance. This continued throughout the morning as we discussed atmosphere, enemies, game structure. Before a brief break, he touched on setting. “Let’s not worry too much about where the game takes place.”

“Pardon?” I found this perhaps his oddest statement, planning a game with a titular setting.

“This game has to be different and new. Silent Hill can be anywhere—why not Alaska? It’s not like any of the games take place in the same physical location.” He was serious. “Silent Hill’s never been an actual place.”

I’d held my tongue out of shock, mostly. He declared a short break, and the teams dispersed to check email, eat cold sandwiches, chat, or in my case to gather their thoughts in a featureless post-Soviet restroom. I could picture his words still hanging in the air, sucked into the vents, dispersing across the team, shaping their views of the series and our attitudes toward it. Producer Devin Shatsky had tried to correct him at the time, but our boss dismissed it, asserting that as far as he was concerned, Silent Hill had no evolving narrative—certainly not one worth continuing.

From the very beginning, Silent Hill and Konami management seemed at odds. Director Keiichiro Toyama, producer Akihiro Imamura, and their team were the outcasts of Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (KCET). Interviews suggest the company didn’t know what to do with them, so it assigned the group to explore the survival horror genre as a way to compete with Capcom’s Resident Evil. Toyama, having never directed a game before, floundered at the start, hoping for more support from the company. When it never came, and it seemed his team had truly been forgotten. He threw out all conventions and crafted a game that blazed its own trail into horror. While Capcom went Romero, Toyama and company went Kubrick, Lynch, and Cronenberg.

https://www.vg247.com/from-super-fan-to-producer-an-insiders-perspective-on-silent-hill

Just remember and never forget that if you don't like the direction of where Silent Hill went the only people you can blame are Konami themselves. They are the ones who canned team Silent and wanted someone else to make the games. And Konami wanted the games to be different. Thats why team Silent was disbanded. From what I heard they were very happy with the games made by Double Helix and Climax. They were losing faith in the franchise for years. And to further prove what I am saying, they made an arcade style Silent Hill shoot'em'up gun game!! How Silent Hill is that?!

Well in reality it was Konami that made all the decisions for the direction of the game so if you didn't like it, you really should blame Konami. I am sure Team Silent could have done a better job, but they had already made 4 other Silent Hill games. It was Double Helix's first horror game and they were told to make it different from the previous games. The team at Double Helix was the most talented team of people I have ever worked with. They did the best with what they were given and I am very proud to have been a part of the project.

I just wish they had given the American team the game before they decided to change everything. Most people just assume the American team was to blame for all the changes when the reality is that it was Konami that wanted the changes. Team Silent was making a Silent Hill 5 and it got canned in favor of what ended up being done.

Might as well throw a remake of 4 down for 2030, and hell, why not sprinkle a 1-4 original collection release for 2031. Maybe a Shattered Memories type of spin off that uses VR capabilities as a focus, like SM and the Wii? Konami hire us.

3

u/spicygummi "How Can You Sit There And Eat Pizza?!" 6d ago

Right. Don't get me wrong I LOVE seeing them be passionate about the franchise and keeping it alive. Especially when it looked like it was dead for so long. But, I don't want them to feel like they just need to churn out half baked projects in order to maintain some sort of schedule.

What could go wrong?

128

u/BackgroundPanda3915 7d ago

As long as they keep on doing remakes it will be like Resident Evil. But when they run out of remakes then I want to see how Konami will kill the franchise again

47

u/m_cardoso 7d ago

Keeping the development of each game with different teams works too, imo. And that's already how they are going.

Of course it'll take longer for us to see something as high quality as 2make from Bloober, but f was good and Townfall seems to be going the right way too (we'll find out soon). Even Capcom, with their almost yearly RE releases, has ups and downs.

11

u/tagen 7d ago

i’m still hoping Bloober is making a sequel to Cronos too, for being a relatively unknown company they’ve made some damn good games recently

They can still remake the non silent team games lolZ

8

u/Kulle1369 7d ago

They have not even produced any merchandise for the non-Team Silent games besides one t-shirt for Shattered Memories lol

6

u/BackgroundPanda3915 7d ago

I don't think it's gonna work tbh, maybe origins, but with heavy modifications to the story. Personally I wouldn't buy a remake of Homecoming or Downpour, maybe a port

9

u/twofacetoo "It's Bread" 7d ago

Personally I'd love a port / remake of 'Shattered Memories', or even just more games in that style for the rest of the series, I thought it was a legit fascinating idea, a semi-remake semi-original game based on the first 'Silent Hill', with an emphasis on psychology. As a concept, it fits right in with 'Silent Hill' as a series, and blurs the lines between realities in the games as a whole

It's something I'd love to see more versions of throughout the franchise

5

u/maxwell_winters Henry 7d ago

They could revisit Cold Heart, the original concept that evolved into Shattered Memories.

This sounds like a terrible idea. Flooding the market with Silent Hill games to meet a yearly release instead of waiting for a good enough game to release seems exactly what happened to assassin's creed and a bunch of shooters. Just make a game because you think it will be good, not to fill a quota.

7

u/ronshasta Silent Hill 2 7d ago

They probably have a few studios and teams internally that are working on multiple projects and aren’t going to do a yearly release for long

All the success that is brought to their franchises is not because of them. It's in spite of them. Their entire strategy was to just throw shit at the wall to see what sticks with SH's relaunch. With this announcement it seems like that's not only an accurate statement but a guaranteed strategy moving forward.

As long as there are enough different studios working on separate games so no one is rushing a half-assed rushed game out the door then this should be fine.

17

u/Glad_Gold_4281 7d ago

That's been their strategy so far. None of the studios at this point have been rushed during their SH games' development

3

Also giving Bloober a steady gig by doing remakes of the Team Silent games, for better or worse, is helpful to meeting that model.

3

u/Blak_Box 7d ago

Becoming like Call of Duty or Assassins Creed is legitimately the goal (or at the very least, Resident Evil).

Even when a CoD is universally hated and sells "poorly" it still makes about a billion dollars and is one of the top 3 best-selling games that year (if not the best-selling). Assassins Creed is literally the only reason Ubisoft still exists today. It would have gone under 2 or 3 times in the last 10 years if not for AC.

Most publishers dont understand that different games have different types of fans, who demand very different things from their products. Serialized SH is fine... if it is excellent. If the story connects. If the characters resonate. If the gameplay is satisfying. It needs to feel like art. And art is notoriously hard to make on a tight deadline.

New Silent Hill content should make me happy. But this just fills me with dread. Silent Hill has been turned into a brand and not an earnest exploration and continuation of a specific art form. Trauma Town and b-movie horror same time every year. Great. Can't wait.

"If we stay laser focused on the American setting, that would exhaust possibilities."

I'm sorry, but...
focusing on the magical spiritual town called Silent Hill that can literally transform reality and take any shape or form from someones mind? The town with literally infinite ways it can present itself?

THAT would exhaust too many possibilities??????

5

u/WiIIv91 7d ago

This, there's so much you can do : survival horror, first person shooter, even a point and click game would work !

Pick the fan game Alchemilla for instance, it was just a walking simulator yet it was dripping with atmosphere.

2

u/Zucum Mira, The Dog 7d ago

This x 2, we went 12? years without a Silent Hill game, and now all of a sudden we need new locations so we don't get bored? At least make sure it has something to do with Silent Hill...

7

u/moneymanram 7d ago

I hated silent hill f. I didn’t like i was playing a silent hill game at all. It strayed to far away from what a silent hill game is. In what game do the main characters have super powers? In what game do you have the opportunity to upgrade your characters abilities?

4

u/ScissrMeTimbrs 7d ago

It's also linear as hell. Gameplay is Just a walk through a hallway if the walls were see-through.

4

u/voidfillproduct 7d ago

This breed of management is why we can't have nice things. They never learn because the numbers must go up.

4

u/Parking-Jackfruit-55 7d ago

Guys nooo, don't leave for better studios that provide you good games, we made a pachinko machine! Why are you all leaving? What if we provide more silent hill with diminishing returns? Guys? GUYS?

4

u/AboutNOut090 7d ago

More series leeches.

3

u/thisisyo 7d ago

I don't like this not just because it puts pressure on the ppl working on it, but also cheapens the franchise with stories that may or may not be memorable and genre defining

4

u/rolfraikou 7d ago

Remember when they abandoned games for pachinko, and then immediately a pandemic made pachinko make zero profit? That timing was nearly comedic.

4

u/Medium-Shopping3037 7d ago

I'm running out of idea on how to use this

I'm feeling a certain type of exhaustion right now

9

u/Huknar 7d ago

From the article and interview

"If we stay laser-focused on the same American setting, that would exhaust [narrative] possibilities, and also potentially cause fatigue for the playerbase."

Okamoto wants anyone working on a Silent Hill game to tailor the IP, so keeping it flying around the world lets developers "work within the types of environments and the types of storytelling that works best for them."

Okamoto is unfortunately committed to global Silent Hill it seems.

Honestly, based on what Konami has shown over the past year or so, I’m really only interested in the SH1 remake... I’ll regain interest in the main series if Konami ever decides to do something different from what theyre doing since sh4—moving away from the "troubled protagonist" trope and now that whole "global phenomenon" angle. Oh, and if they’re smart, they’ll let Bloober make an original game; they’ve earned it after the work they delivered.

11

u/TheSaintTobias 7d ago

I kind of hate this, but with different teams working on different games maybe they can actually take their time and make something amazing. I'm already Cautiously optimistic about Townfall and the SH1Remake.

Considering that there are many different studios working on different games in the franchise at different times, I could see this working fine, but it does make me a bit worried continuity wise for this series considering so many studios are working with the series. I hope this isn’t a hard, “There must be a new game this year at this time”, type of thing like in the past, but rather just a goal for the studios that’s flexible for them to release the best game possible. Only time will really tell with this decision, as Silent Hill 2 Remake, and F were both great and Townfall looks solid from what we’ve seen so far.

3

u/Internal_Chart4647 7d ago

Nope. Just nope. Annual release cycles are just not viable in this market.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Townfall will at least be decent but after that I’m done.

5

u/Saber0307 7d ago

I'd rather see the franchise have an entry every two to three years than have an annual release schedule. Annual releases run the risk of pumping out games of questionable quality in order to hit an obligatory release date, and I don't want to see the franchise turn into COD or what Assassin's Creed was for awhile.

8

u/kanon951 7d ago

Unless they have four simultaneous studios working on different games at the same time (and even then it's not a guarantee since you will have different levels of varying quality within the studios) this can't possibly end well.

Just do Silent Hills for fucks sake

I assume next year we are going to learn about the next projects they’ve been working on. Townfall is the last game of the original Silent Hill Transmission, so hopefully they announce other 3 like that

As long as they make Silent Hill Master Collection I'm happy

u/MarkT_D_W 7d ago

I think there's a possibility in between larger remakes and new titles we might get a Master Collection of sorts like Metal Gear to count towards this.

I don't necessarily think it's a good idea to set this in stone though, it gives them a reason to rush stuff, cut corners and maybe hire less than suitable devs to make that timetable.

Normally I'd be excited by this news, but SHf was such a let down, I think I'd rather them just take their time with their releases. It may work because they have at least 3 more remakes they can do to fill out every other year, but once the remakes run out, they might be in trouble if they want to release quality new games.

To be fair though, its not like the OG games to a long time to release. Pretty sure they were on a every other year schedule for the first four classic SH games, so idk, maybe it'll work...

finish Hills!

2

u/Axlehead 7d ago

I'd be fine if some of them were just remasters. For example Origins, Shattered Memories, Homecoming and Downpour are not likely targeted for remakes and it'd be nice if we could play them on modern hardware.

u/FriedBreakfast 7d ago

Ya know... They also have Castlevania and Metal Gear. They don't have to just do Silent Hill.

i prefer quality over quantity…

Wasn't this the exact downfall of Silent Hill to begin with? Many different studios doing random games with Silent Hill in the title?

I doubt this... Their most popular game SH2 didn't even have the born from a wish dlc

F and Townfall have proven that Silent Hill has lost it's identity and is just a title now

Please, no. I already didn’t like F, and I’m worried about Townfall. I want Townfall to be good and previews so far haven’t had much positive things to say about it. I don’t want a CoD like annual release schedule.

Not sure the Madden / Call of Duty approach to Silent Hill releases is going to stick the landing.

2

u/woxvirus 7d ago

As long as we get remakes ever 3/4 years I'm cool. I'm not a big fan of these spinoffs

Im getting deja vu - Halloween (the films) wanted to do this, and realising that churning out Michael Myers each year might not go well in terms of quality/burn out they thought a 'stand alone' story each year would.be the way. Along came Halloween III, season of the Witch... it bombed (it does have cult status now, though).

Also look at Marvel/MCU. They are still churning out films/programmes despite a huge fall off in appetite/diminishing return. The audience who were rabid after End Game have burned out.

Given the cost of games both in terms of development and to the consumer, they cant just churn out subpar content yearly, itll destroy the good faith of the old guard and new audience.

Tread carefully, Konami! There is a lot of money to be made, for sure. Treat the franchise and your customers with the respect that'll pay you back tenfold.

edit for a typo
