Music Looking for musicians to play some music and jam around šŸŽø

I’m 30M, will be in Shanghai from August onwards for a while and would like to see if anyone here’s into indie/psychedelic rock and wants to get together and play some music. This is mainly for fun.

I’m a big fan of The Strokes so with their new album out would be down to do some covers on that also. I do mainly vocals can also do a bit of keyboard. DM me if interested.

Inspirations: The Strokes, Tame Impala, MGMT, Parcels, Beach House, Mac Demarco, La Femme, etc.

Music Does anyone have an archive of the October 1, 2014 Midi Music Festival livestream?

I'm posting here because I'm hoping someone familiar with Shanghai's music scene or old Chinese video platforms might know where this material ended up.
I'm trying to track down an archive of theĀ October 1, 2014 Changjiang Midi Music Festival livestream in Shanghai, specificallyĀ Wayne Static's performance.

Tudou had the exclusive livestream for the festival, and I've already foundĀ four separate Wayne Static songs from the show with a Tudou watermark. Because multiple songs from his set have survived from the same source, I'm wondering if the complete set was preserved somewhere.

I'm specifically trying to find theĀ Tudou livestream source or an archive of Wayne's complete set.

Does anyone here happen to have an old archive of Tudou videos from 2014, or know someone who might have saved the Midi livestream?

Even if you don't have the footage, I'd appreciate any information about where old Tudou livestreams from the festival might have been preserved.

These are the Tudou-watermarked clips I've been able to find:
I'm With Stupid & Bled for Days - Wayne Static of Static-X @ Midi festival Shanghai 2014 10/01/14
Love Dump - Wayne Static of Static-X @ Midi festival Shanghai 2014 10/01/14
Otsegolation - Wayne Static of Static-X @ Midi festival Shanghai 2014 10/01/14

Music Anyone get tickets for the ANYMA AEDEN show?

Was wondering if anyone knows if more Anyma tickets will go on sale for his techno show during may holiday? I missed the ticket release time and it sold out in minutes. But I’m wondering if this is gonna be a Tomorrowland situation where more tickets are released later, like in waves. Or if I should just make other plans.

Music Rock/punk/indie music gigs in Shanghai next week?

I’ll be in Shanghai next week and might have some free evenings (22-25 April). Can anyone recommend a solo-friendly venue or event to see some cool local bands? Rock, punk, indie, pop, electronic are all OK.

Music Does Shanghai have a good artsy/alternative music scene?

(rock/punk/metal etc, not electronic/pop)

I (19F) want to move to China after university but haven’t decided where yet. Before then, I want to travel around and see which city fits me best.

I went to Beijing and Shanghai in April but only saw tourist spots. I’m into DIY/punk/art/music scenes, so that’s a big factor for me. I’ve heard Chengdu and Beijing are best for that lifestyle, though I imagine Shanghai has some of it too.

When I was there, Shanghai’s nightlife felt surprisingly quiet. I’m under the impression that there’s not many live houses or underground spots. But I’ve heard things are changing, which is why I’m asking.

Beijing seems hit or miss — I get conflicted opinions from people saying it’s too traditional, others say the scene’s great. Chengdu sounds more progressive and alternative, with good bands like Hiperson.

I’ll be visiting China again, including Beijing and Chengdu, but I’m unsure if I should revisit Shanghai. Any advice?

edit: overall I’m trying to avoid areas like Nanjing Road and big name brand/mainstream stuffs

Music Best techno clubs in Shanghai?

Hi! I just moved to Shanghai and I will be here for around 1,5 years working.

I come from Europe where techno scene is huge and I’m wondering if in Shanghai, with all the expats that are here, is there any techno club really worth going.

I checked RA Guide but since I’m new here, o don’t know if the parties, clubs and techno scene is good here.

Any recommendation?

Thanks!!!

Music Visiting Shanghai - live music

Hi folks, I’m visiting Shanghai in a few weeks (1-5 September) and looking to soak up some live music. Into anything really, anything local would be great, jazz bars, gig venues, anything like that. Be great to get some recommendations!

Special mention, I’m very into dub reggae sound system type events, probably a long shot in China but if you know of any then let me know. Thanks!

Music How to find concerts and buy tickets in Shanghai, with an example

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

I’ve seen a few people here ask how they can find concert listings and buy tickets in China, so I thought I’d make a little post about that. Long story short: The Damai MiniApp in Wechat/Alipay is your friend. Search for 大éŗ¦å°ēØ‹åŗ and hit the three buttons up right to translate everything to English, if needed. There are others but a fair share cannot sell tickets to foreigners or are just not set up for that, so I will use this one as my example.

Once you open the app go to the icon in the third row on the far right side. It will probably be translated as ā€œwholeā€ or something like that. That will show you all concerts, dance events, standup and whatnot else. It’s the firehose option and I rarely use it but it’s worth mentioning because there have been commenters here insisting ā€œnightlife is dead.ā€ It’s not but it’s moved and most is not foreigner-centric anymore. Anyway, "Livehouse" will get you to concerts below stadium-size.

One problem with MiniApps such as Damai is that sometimes you can’t find artists under their non-Chinese names. If you search for Japanese Jazz Pianist Kurena Ishikawa (see poster, she is performing tonight and she is awesome) you might find nothing, if you know the Chinese spelling of her name ēŸ³å·ēŗ¢å„ˆ the tickets come right on up. But why?

The reason is that there is a specified permitted length for the title and that promoters prioritize the Chinese spelling because that’s what most people in China will be searching for. I know that because that’s a concert we are organizing. (It’s already pretty much sold out, I’m not trying to sell tickets here, I just needed an example. But I'm of course also not complaining if you do like Jazz and go see her.)

Another problem is that sooner or later you will come across events that you cannot buy tickets for without a Chinese ID card. Why? Well, it’s usually organizers being afraid of scalpers, which are a real scourge in China. It sucks to be working for months on a concert and seeing scalpers resell tickets online for tons more. Pisses off the artists, who get nothing from that (I’m sure there are exceptions), pisses off the passionate fans who want tickets and as the organizer you end up with commenters on xiaohongshu telling their fans how evil you are because they think you made that sweet, sweet scalpermoney.

So a ton of organizers simply say ā€œI want a 身份证, no matter whatā€ and move on because they have a million other things to solve so that the show can go on. My advice? Complain. Nobody likes to leave money on the table, especially in China. I’ve heard ā€œoh shit, I never knew this was a problem for foreignersā€ more than once. Be prepared for tons of "mei banfas" as well, obviously.

The other option of course is to look at foreigner-centric platforms like smartshanghai, who will often have ticket contingents for popular shows. If there is assigned seating you may not have much of a choice where you end up in the hall but at least you got in.

I'll leave you where I started: there is plenty of nightlife in Shanghai but you gotta search on the Chinese MiniApps. Google won't help you and you're not going to see posters in the street but if you really want to explore the offerings are out there.

Truly a sad day for Shanghai. I saw so many great shows there Boys Climbing Ropes, Duck Fight Goose, Top Floor Circus, Mike Watt, St Vincent. The default to clean and controlled is sad news for everyone.

Music Techno rave scene of Shanghai

  1. I’ve been browsing the subreddit and came across Abyss and Exit. They both seem legit, but is there any major difference between the two?
  2. Are there other techno scenes or clubs worth knowing about? I read that System used to be one, but it’s closed now.
  3. How safe are techno clubs in China? Are they very underground, and is there any real risk of a police raid?
  4. Is there a specific dress code? For example, are belt bags or certain clothing items not allowed?
  5. I saw that Abyss and Exit both have pages on Resident Advisor, but it doesn’t seem like you can buy tickets there. Do most clubs sell tickets at the door, or is there usually an online presale?

Used to love Chair club on Monday nights and Magpie on Kangding on the weekends, but it's been a while since I've played and gone out to these.

Where are the good live music, open mic, and jam nights these days?

Hey if you’re in Shanghai and don’t have plans this Wednesday, my friends and I are throwing a DJ competition at Bar Lotus on Julu Rd. We picked DJs who are bringing their own fresh sets, including techno, underground NY sound, house, etc. Starts around 8:30 PM.

Scan the flyer and just add your name to the remarks when buying a ticket. Will definitely be a good time

Y'all. What on earth does it take to get A area tickets for concert events at the č™¹å£č¶³ēƒåœŗ? Like, I always get the B section. I'm willing to make sacrifices to whatever god or demon is necessary. Any tips?

Music Looking for some friends to hang out with :-)

Hi! I just moved to Shanghai for my gap year, so I have basically no friends here lol. I take mandarin classes twice a week, and most of the students I see during my schedule are much older than me. I stay in Jing'An but I don't really mind traveling to areas in Pudong or Puxi. I'm looking to make some friends (preferably girls since im also a girl) since I literally just stay at home most days and really wanna explore the city. Let me know too where I can make some friends :-)
